Simple really I’ll illustrate. You pour 20 gal of water into two 10 gal containers. But you keep pouring that same 20 gal into more and more smaller containers over time. Each container would have much less each time as more containers are added.

Same applies to this. They get a bigger cut of money with both vc and nso. As the selection grows titles will get less of a cut compared to now while with vc they get a much larger one time payout per person and some of the ideal upgrade fee I mentioned.

I’m more partial to CAVE shooters personally but I will take any shumup, fighting game and side scrolling beatemup anybody is willing to throw at the system.

Right now I should be able to play all the vc I purchased on 3ds on my Switch that’s currently available. I own Super Mario Bros on 3ds vc. I have the nso nes app with that game. Ergo why waste my money on a sub that I don’t use or even have a use for?

You think “accounts” make games magically port and run on completely different systems? Accounts don’t mean jack.

You want games on new hardware, you buy again, or, you pay a sub to fund the work needed to put games on different hardware.

If you think the sub is a waste of money, then don’t sub. Simple as that.

Shmups aren’t that popular anymore, but they’ve held on as a niche genre. I haven’t really spoken to many people who are big fans of the genre, but since you apparently are, what are your thoughts on the new R-Type 2 coming to Switch? It feels like a proper, modern, high budget shmup from a series with pedigree. As someone who’s not big into the genre, this one actually caught my interest.

While I play a loooooot of shumups I don’t pay attention to their nuances as much as I do with say fighting games. In part because many of them are hard for me to follow visually after a point. I do tend to struggle through them as I love them despite my handicap.

So take my impressions with a grain of salt. R-type has always been a fair handed difficulty shumup imo unlike say Pink Sweets or mushihimesama or soukyogurentai (seriously, F that game...but I’ll beat it one day) and it's a moderate paced series. Rtype has never been impressive visually to me although final 2 looks nice (r-type III is my favorite in the series) but it doesn’t have the design flair other games have such as thunder force (III) or most of the cave shooters. One upside is the series tries to tell a overarching story (within reason as it’s still a shumup)

That being said it is a solid approachable series that won’t have you ready to cuss out everyone you see in frustration. I don’t have any negatives about rtype but it’s a imo average series.

I think Shiryu could give you more to go on.

Ya, I liked Sine Mora quite a bit, and Sin & Punishment 2 is easily my fave of the genre (and an all time fave at that). Never liked the soul crushing difficulty of certain games in the genre though. Unfortunately there just aren’t many options nowadays of higher quality, higher budget shmups. R-Type 2 looked really impressive to me because I’m just not used to seeing shmups look that good. Hopefully it’ll turn out to be a good game.

I also beat Ikaruga (with unlimited lives though, no way I could do it otherwise), and bought Raiden V but never played it. Just not much modern choice, aside from smaller budget indies.

@JaxonH smaller budget isn’t bad in shumups as the main things you want are responsive, tight controls and fair hitboxes. I’ve found a few that I enjoy: danmaku unlimited 3, sky force reloaded, devil engine and pawarumi.

Of course there are a ton of classics on the Switch. The psyiko games, or raiden or esp ra de.

Your copy of raiden v is lonely. Play it. It’s the honorable thing to do.

They are ROMs on an emulator. It’s literally a drag and drop operation. Mario on Wii is the same on wiiu, 3ds and Switch. There’s no difference. The subscription service is a scam if you don’t play online even more of a waste of money if you only want the classic games to lose access every other week because of a weekly check in. It ought to be available to everyone regardless whether f you sub or not, buy them ala carte vc style if you don’t want to sub.

I thought I was clear but obviously math isn’t your strong suit like many others. The more game’s they put out on the service the less money companies get over time since that has to be split more ways than before. Unless Nintendo hacks up the sub cost that is but eventually you will again come to the same problem. With VC they get a big drop of cash per game bought (and along with my proposed upgrade fee idea it would give them an additional stipend along with the subscription).

That’s... just not true. It’s demonstrably false. There’s a reason Sega Ages games took months in between releases and eventually had to stop because it wasn’t profitable enough. If it was simply “drag and drop” you would see every old game ever made being sold on every single store front, all released at once, or spread out over time but it would be every single game if it was that easy. You’d see EVERY single game on Wii U being sold on EVERY single system. That is just not the case. It’s just not. You have a fundamental misconception of how the world works. I’ve been emulating games a long time, and there is a night and day difference between street corner “drag and drop” emulation quality and official release quality that just happens to utilize an emulator. Not to mention, even street corner emulators take YEARS of continual hard work and updates to ensure compatibility with as many games as possible. Sometimes it’s decades of work from entire teams and even then, certain games still don’t run perfectly. Emulators don’t magically spring into existence and run every game perfectly. It takes a lot of work from a lot of people for many years. Incremental improvements made over time, and each new platform is an entirely separate beast of its own.

And to reiterate, you speak for yourself and yourself alone. You can think it’s a scam in your personal opinion but millions of others disagree. So do what you want. If you think it’s a scam then don’t subscribe– I don’t know what else you want me to say. Don’t like it, don’t buy it. Problem solved.

For the record I’ve never “lost access” ever, not even once, on any of my 3 Switches. It’s one thing to hypothesize theories, but it’s quite another to see that born out in practice. I never go more than 60 seconds without access to internet- even at work or at the car dealership- it’s everywhere- mobile hotspot on my phone ensures it goes with me everywhere. It would take an act of God to go 7 full days without even so much as a cell phone signal. But again- don’t like it? Don’t buy it. I don’t know what else to tell you. I don’t care what you do and I don’t think anyone else here does either. If you don’t like it, then don’t buy it, don’t play them- go do something else, buy something else, play something else. Play some other console. Sell your switch. Do whatever you want- what more do you want me to say.

If you dislike a product or service, don’t buy it. Nobody here is going to have their feelings hurt if you don’t subscribe for their online service. I don’t think anybody cares, or feels the need to persuade you to do anything. People are perfectly happy with what they have and if you’re not... what do you want me to do about it? What more do you want me to say. You want me to adopt ignorant world views such as “all retro games are drag and drop and should be free forever on every future platform with a single purchase I made 10 years ago on that legacy hardware- how dare they not drag and drop for me to have forever on every console” and then comfort you by reaffirming how bogus it is they’re not giving you free lifetime-long ports for a single $5 purchase made a decade ago? I’m sorry, but such uninformed viewpoints aren’t even worth discussing. I am more than happy to debate a well-thought-out argument, but it needs to be an informed viewpoint.

Isn't it pretty well known that Wii U emulation was different from Wii and Switch? Like it had that issue with the darker screen?

You don’t have to rebuy physical games if you buy another NES, SNES or similar such as a Retron. The same ought to be true with ROMs. The Mario Bros on NSO is the same as the VC. Why should you subscribe to play games you rightfully own? Honestly why are you so against having both NSO and VC? That’s more ways for more people to play more games the way they want to. Everyone would win that way. Those that play online and have internet access can play all the games they want for their yearly fee and others can buy games they want without those they don’t and won’t lose access every other week. It’s happened to me and I feel ripped off that in one months time I could only access those game’s for two weeks out of the four and during that time I wasn’t always in the mood for them then. You have probably been there before yourself when sometimes you are in the mood for something more than another. The point is my limited time with them was even more limited. Had they been available via VC on switch or transferred from my 3ds vc to current Console it would’ve saved a lot of trouble.

And you don’t have to rebuy VC games. Like those NES games, you can still play the VERSION YOU BOUGHT on the SYSTEM YOU BOUGHT IT FOR. You do not own the game to an unlimited degree, you only own the game on the single platform you purchased it for, that’s it. Nothing more. When you buy an NES game, you own it ON THE ORIGINAL NES. When you buy an NES VC game on Wii U, you own it ON WII U. It does not give you unlimited ownership and promise of future ports to all future systems. I’m not gonna keep running around in circles debating that. You’re wrong. It’s as simple as that.

It’s like Charlie Brown saying everything “ought to be 5 cents”. You don’t “have” to do anything. Nobody is putting a gun to your head. You just want to play the game you rightfully own, then play the game you rightfully own... on the system it was purchased for. Nobody is taking away your ability to play that game on the original system you bought it for. But if you want additional privileges such as playing it on a new system that required new development, then you’re going to have to pay a new price. No, you are not entitled to endless future ports on every system that ever comes out from now until eternity. You’re free to think you are just like Charlie Brown is free to think everything should be 5 cents, but I’m not gonna sit here and argue about it.

You feel free to believe whatever you want. Don’t let me stand in your way. But I’m not gonna waste any more of my time trying to reason against an unreasonable premise.

Are you sure Nintendo isn't sending around their special team to make us all re-buy games, @JaxonH ....? What, like SE didn't send around theirs to force me to re-buy Final Fantasy games? & quite a few others I've ended up getting again for particularly Steam as being more convenient

Out of curiosity what do you guys think will be the next Koei Tecmo game for Nintendo ? Aside from Fatal Frame I would love them to do something unexpected.

If i see Dragon Quest Builders 3 on PS5 and Switch with better improvements than Dragon Quest Builders 2, i will die in happiness.
Also, i will be surprised if Monster Rancher 4 from PS2 get Remastered, English release on Switch and get physical release.
