@Ralizah
The more baffling is, Why the heck FF VIII characters can appear in Beautiful 3D rendering on FF Dissidia, but SquareEnix CANNOT bring FF VIII HD remaster with sound quality from PS1 to PS4 & Switch ?
@Ralizah Sakurai chose the DLC characters for Smash 4, meanwhile Nintendo chose the Fighters Pass characters for Smash Ultimate so promotion is likely going to be a major factor this time around.
@Anti-Matter No idea. I know VIII is the "black sheep" of the PS1 FF games, but outright passing it over when it comes to the HD ports just seems weird to me. It's not as hated as something like XIII, as far as I know.
@Grumblevolcano Don't forget that Persona Q2 is a thing. This could easily be seen as free promotion for that game when it releases in Western territories next year.
Atlus isn't developing the Catherine remake for Switch, even though doing so would make perfect sense. I don't see why a series that has never appeared on non-Playstation consoles (beyond spin-offs, anyway) would suddenly make the jump.
@DarthNocturnal
Something funny about Eyes on Me.
I remembered as DDR player, Eyes on Me (Dancemania cover) was supposed to be licensed song for DDR 4th Mix, but it was canceled due to Squaresoft rights.
And now SquareEnix has difficulty to do with Eyes on Me music rights when they remastered for Steam version.
Eyes on Me, one of hardest song to be licensed...
There may be a music rights issue involving the song “Eyes on Me“.
Is this a recent problem? As far as I remember Eyes on Me was in Theatrhythm (although a loss of rights since then makes sense - FF8 was previously rereleased for Steam and PS3 and has only recently missed out on the remasters).
Also quite disappointing to hear about the source code - I'm quite curious to know what other big retro games this has happened to. Personally I wouldn't mind them reworking the PC version. Aside from the music (which can easily be fixed with mods), it's my favourite way to play the game currently.
It's a real shame cause (unsurprisingly given my avatar) I'd drop everything in a heartbeat to play FFVIII on the Switch.
I’m quite pleased about the Online service as I don’t feel any urge to buy into it. I’d rather have 6 cups of tasty tasty coffee as at least I’ll get some value from them.
@subpopz
I don't like the idea of classic games being locked to the console, it kinda defeats the purpose of the account system. (Quick example I bought s Retron 2 since my nes is on the fritz, so I paid for the new system. But I don't have to rebuy games I already own and if the nes gets fixed then that's 2 systems I own that can play the exact same games.) A unified VC, Classic game selection, nostalgia gaming overload extravaganza palooza whatever they want to call the service that won't restart every single iteration and new games will constantly be added across all Nintendo platforms sounds like a winner to me. That's what owning the games will do!
@subpopz@GameOtaku
You’re right about the Crossbuy subpopz. They didn’t let you transfer a single game from PS3 to PS4. And only a few select games were crossbuy between PS4 and Vita. None of them were VC games.

@JaxonH
Wasn't there something like crossbuy in the early ps4 days with games on PS3 to ps4? I remember something being said at a local game store that if you bought it on PS3 you could download it to 4 or something like that.
@electrolite77
Right. Kinda like Nintendo with BC, which they used to do, then came the current gen and it stopped (granted, there’s a good reason for that given the new architecture, I fully expect BC going forward)
@GameOtaku
No, not that I’m aware of. Could have been a promo for a specific game in the early days but, as far as policy, that pretty much stopped when PS4 came on the scene. There have been a couple select games a few years back that released with crossbuy between PS4 and Vita, but very rarely has PS3 ever been included in that. I’m sure you do you could find one or two examples if you dug deep enough but, those would be exceptions rather than the rule

I agree they should give the option to rent or buy VC games. MS manage it with Game Pass.
However I believe the only chance of their retro games offering making it to systems beyond the Switch is through the Online subscription. I think they’ll use the next 5 years building up a good library. Then there’s a chance they’ll try and incentivise subscribers to continue subscribing on the next system by having, if not everything, a good selection at launch. I know they’ve never done that before but this time there’s a revenue incentive.
@GameOtaku
It says right there at the top of that page that it applies to certain games only (and most games weren’t on all the systems). Some games were crossbuy between 2 of those platforms and not the others (Minecraft comes to mind, which charged an upgrade fee).
They pretty much stopped doing crossbuy. I’ve owned a PS Vita and PS4 from day one, and while certain games were given cross buy as a promotion, they never did it for any VC games in the current gen, and they pretty much stopped doing it altogether at this point. And it was only ever a here and there thing anyways. A few lucky games received it, most didn’t. It got its reputation for the crossbuy last gen between Vita and PS3 for Classics, which was mostly across the board, though even then it wasn’t 100% as there is quite a list of games that weren’t compatible, and some were compatible but not officially so you had to transfer via cable from one system to the other (Jeanne d’Arc) but couldn’t download...
Its like BC from Nintendo. It was something prolific last generation, but it’s not something they’re doing currently aside from the occasional indie, so it’s not something that really helps us now.

@Ralizah Sony doesn't have a handheld anymore, the PSP and Vita were Persona handheld systems but the Vita is fully dead next year. So the Vita's replacement in a sense is the Switch.
@Grumblevolcano There's no indication that Atlus feels that way. When talking about SMT V, they've discussed making a game that is fun to play on the TV, indicating their intention to treat it more like a home console than a handheld.
If the Vita doesn't seem like a good option for an upgraded Persona 5, then they'll probably just leave their re-release on the PS4. Recall that they did something similar with P3 and P3 FES.
It'll be shocking if Sony loses Persona exclusivity, and I'm not expecting it to happen.
@JaxonH@electrolite77
Or how about a DIY VC transfer from your old system to the newer? You bought the game on 3ds, wiiu (maybe even Wii), you back up the game files as you would if like buying a newer 3ds or WiiU to a sd card to a PC, then transfer your VC games to the switch. Unlike VC the switch is using a catch all emu like the ones on PC or nes/snes classic rather than each game purchased through VC being game and emu bundled. That way it takes the burden off of Nintendo for renewing new licenses and what not for games and gives people access to larger library assuming they already have a decent built up library and can do this going forward!
@Ralizah
I don’t think that’s going to happen actually.
For one, there is no evidence of any official exclusivity. That would be one weird exclusivity contract that has allowed the franchise to appear in spinoffs on other platforms, allows Joker to appear in Smash, and why would they be asking about a Switch port in a survey if they were bound by an exclusivity contract?
It doesn’t make sense. If they were bound by exclusivity they would not be asking about a Switch port in a survey. That, along with the fact the franchise has appeared on 3DS and soon Switch, is very conclusive evidence that no such exclusivity exists.
Sony has been losing quite a few traditionally exclusive series, or series that are typically associated with Playstation. Crash is a good example, coming to Switch. Final Fantasy X, XII and VII coming to Switch. Dragon Quest XI and Builders 1/2 coming to Switch. Valkyria Chronicles 1/4 coming to Switch. Disgaea 1/5 coming to Switch. YS VIII coming to Switch.
And while these are by no means conclusive, concrete proof, they are indicative of the fact that many series that are traditionally on PlayStation are coming to Switch. Many of them were often thought in the past to be “exclusive” or at least “console exclusive”. So unless there is actual evidence of a real exclusivity contract, I don’t think there’s any evidence that suggests it couldnt come to Switch.
Then we look at the evidence that it will come. This series has historically always released a portable version afterwards. Vita can’t run the game. And even if it could I don’t think they would bother. Although the dancing games are legitimate evidence that should be considered, they also brought PQ2 to 3DS, which is also a dying system. I think these games were easy cash ins, because they had already released a previous game in the series on the respective platforms, so they already had an engine running and a straggling fanbase to sell to. Persona 5 would have to be built ground up.
Switch is the natural choice. Furthermore, Nintendo headquarters picked the DLC characters for Smash. Not Sakurai. So while arguments could be made concerning other characters not indicating a series is coming to Switch, those other characters were all picked by Sakurai. Headquarters would not override the sovereign choice of Sakurai for these DLC characters unless backroom marketing deals and negotiations are in play. If headquarters negotiated Joker in Smash and got anything less then a port of Persona 5 on Switch, then they are the worst negotiators on the planet. And that is the biggest evidence for Persona 5 on Switch. Couple that with the fact they sent out a survey asking if people wanted the game on Switch, couple that with the fact Switch is the hottest system on the market and the natural handheld successor to the Vita, couple that with the fact Switch could actually run the game... couple that with the evidence they are releasing a complete edition... and I’d say we have fairly convincing evidence Persona 5 is coming to Switch.
I would be downright shocked and amazed if this game doesn’t come to Switch. Of course, nothing is certain, but at this point the evidence for definitely outweighs the evidence against.
