Apparently it's sub-native res in handheld mode, but that's the case for a lot of games on the Switch, and they generally look okay as long as they don't dip too far down in terms of the resolution.

I've found that 540p looks amazing for handheld games. I just got my GPD Win 2 handheld, which runs windows 10 and a lot of the seventh generation games that it can run, because PC isn't as optimized, I've had to turn down to 544p to get consistent 30 frames. But the games look pretty dang good at 540p. It's max resolution of the PS Vita, for reference.
That being said the games that run at full 720 look absolutely stunning. Half Life 2, HL2 Episodes 1 and 2 and Portal 2 in full 720p with max settings on a handheld... oh my gosh, lemme tell ya.
But if the game does need the resolution cut down to 540p, I haven't really found it to be that big of a deal. It doesn't look as uber sharp and crisp but, it doesn't look blurry either.
Now, you start getting sub-500 (like 480p) and ya, you really notice. I think 540 is the edge of the frontier, so to speak. Anywhere from 540 to 720 is the sweet spot. But cross that threshold and you are in the danger zone.

Got Ys VIII in the mail today! The map/poster and cards were a suprise. Were they a pre-order thing, or do they come in every physical copy?
Anyhow, looks really good on the Switch's screen, IMO, and the environments are really lush as far as I'm concerned. Gameplay is quick enough to pick up and fun, though I'm having trouble Flash Guarding (I'm getting the hang of Flash Dodging though). I got through the first boss, but it kicked my butt pretty decently (I had to use most of my healing items, including my only revive potion).
Also, I noticed a list of DLC items in my items menu. Do we get those for free (like a late release "bonus" of some sort), or do you have to buy them?

Kuma voices were still.... Meh in my opinion.
@Therad
They're definitely behind on sales - I thought this was common knowledge. Forget where I read it, but yea - nothing major or alarming in magnitude, but Switch is a bit behind what they were hoping for this year.
I think the major problem Nintendo will face in getting that 20 million target for the financial year is what else other than Pokémon Let's Go and Super Smash bros do they have that's big enough to shift big volumes of units, especially during the holiday season.
If they are behind on sales targets already, then that means that figure is going to be more difficult to reach. I can see another drop in share prices impending.

@FragRed Pokemon Let's Go and Smash Ultimate are enough regarding huge holiday games when combined with games that are already on the system like BotW, MK8 Deluxe and Mario Odyssey. Game droughts on the other hand look bad and the 2nd half of this year is mostly in a Wii U era type game drought period. I don't know if Nintendo's trying to rely on 3rd parties to fill in the gaps or if they're saving some 1st party announcements (e.g. Wii U ports) for a July Direct but the former isn't going to work.
They were still on track to 20 million IIRC. I'm not too antsy about it, considering how popular Pokemon and Smash are.
Does the general public even think the Switch is "underperforming"? That's the real question I want to know. If sales figures say otherwise then fine, but considering games have been selling well I'd wager people are seeing games all the time to buy.
Metroid, Xenoblade, EarthBound shill
I run a YouTube/Twitch channel for fun. Check me out if you want to!
Please let me know before you send me a FC request, thanks.
@Grumblevolcano I expect Pokemon + the Pokeball to definitely move units. Smash sells mostly to the faithful, so I don't see that moving systems the same way anything with the Pokemon brand + existing content does. I don't think they're relying on third parties given how little they focused on third parties at E3. Which is weird considering the gap in 1st party output, and the fact that a number of great 3rd parties are filling that space. I think they're probably more overconfident than anything else. Maybe there's more WiiU ports, but I think they are confident in their existing lineup and what they're offering more than they probably should be. They fully bank on evergreen sales that if BotW sold systems last year, it will still sell systems 4 years from now so that's now part of the annual lineup for them because it worked that way in the 90's. OTOH, it's hard to say they're wrong, look at GTA and Skyrim.... it's not just a Nintendo effect anymore.
But the third party lineup is the best I've seen from Nintendo since the DS. It's almost like other consoles with weekly releases of must have titles.
I think they're on track for now but laced with the same kind of hubris that will net Sony some trouble. My worry is several years from now depending on the new presidents priorities.
I actually thought nearly any worthwhile games are all coming in 2nd half... Like I personally have 8 retail games on 2nd half? That's pretty much unprecedented for me, personally.
I'm not sure how you find that 2nd half is drought though? (The only game that I bought that is late port is Ys8 for 2nd half) @Grumblevolcano
@darkfenrir I was talking about 1st party (exclusives and ports) and 3rd party exclusives, considering that was the logic used for looking at Wii U lineups it's only fair to consider the same with Switch. So you have a massive gap between between July 13th and October 5th with only the Xenoblade 2 DLC in between.
