@Octane
I mean, I just have to say... who is judging the reaction levels? You? Me? Some guy named Bob? Do you have some kind of "reaction-o'meter" sitting on your desk that you hold up next to your computer screen to gauge levels of internet outrage?
I'm digressing, but you realize how ridiculous it sounds for you (or any of us) to kinda-sorta claim that you KNOW with a fair amount of certainty how upset or not upset an entire community of millions of people is about any given thing?
Just something for all of us to chew on when making claims like this. Seems unrealistic to me, but hey, I'm just some guy.
@rallydefault I dunno. I don't think it's an outrageous claim to say that almost nobody complained when the news broke that Mario Odyssey was a Switch exclusive. Or when Uncharted 4 turned out to be a PS4 exclusive (who would've guessed?).
If you can't claim something like that, there's very little we can say at all, and these forums would be an empty and desolate place
@Octane
Well, see, your last statement, through my eyes, looks more like: "forums ARE empty and desolate places ASIDE FROM opinions." If you're in the mood to read what Billy in his dad's basement in Minnesota thinks about Bomberman's retail price while passing said opinion off as accepted fact, then boy howdy you're in the right place.
And there's my mindset, and anybody who reads my posts a bit (don't expect you to) probably isn't shocked by this: to me, the function of forums is to just let people yell their opinions at one another with little to zero facts or actual, logical reasoning involved (despite what many think about their imaginary Master's degrees in rhetoric lol).
But that's just me. That's kind how I approach most of the internet, actually. I feel really, REALLY bad for people who get their news from secondary and tertiary sources like Twitter retweets and forums like this one. I think it's part of the reason why the truth is becoming fuzzy again (it's happened before in history but through different means... history does repeat itself).
I'm a teacher, and I always teach my kids: you want the facts of a story, you go straight to the primary source. You want commentary and entertaining diversion? Go ahead and read Tweets or forums or internet posts, but do so being utterly aware that it's being spun and it's all opinion heaped on top of opinion.
So, to counter your point, I think even if we acknowledge the impossibility of being factual about things like your claim of how many gamers per capita were upset about Rise of the Spyro, Episode 33, forums will still continue to thrive because society has gotten a taste of the megaphone that is the ability to type words into a box on the internet that others will read.
@rallydefault Well, don't worry about that, if there's one thing I do on a weekly basis, it's finding the original source material. Doesn't matter if that's a paper from last year or an old document from 1833.
And I mean, I kinda agree with what you're saying... but I don't know what have against that claim I made. It's pretty reasonable I'd assume, even though it isn't based on hard numbers.
@Octane Well, quite simply (and I hate the fact that I'm defending this), exclusives have several valid reasons for existing.
1. Promoting competition between hardware. - We remember what Nintendo was like in the Wii/NES era right? Or Microsoft in the 360 era? Or Sony right now? As much as I would love to have them all play all the games, then we're risking the market become even more homoginized with either Microsoft or Sony leaving.
2. That would require asking console creators to support devices that are in direct competition with their own revenue source. Not a sound investment by any means, at least in most scenarios. The only scenario where that could end is if hardware developers weren't allowed to develop software. Which... is unlikely, and has a ton of problems of it's own.
3. Hardware varies. Should games not be allowed to take advantage of system features because that prevents them from being ported to other systems? Super Mario Party couldn't exist as it is if it had to be compatible with a Sony controller. Same goes for Last of Us Part II. Judging by what I've seen in that game, they'd have to incur significant costs to redo assets to make it playable on the Switch. Which brings me to-
4. Multiplatform releases cost more money. Companies aren't charities, and not all games have large financial backings. Plenty of indies can only afford one system's release at a time, and maybe not reaching everything should they be banned? Should companies be required to port games (like say, Call of Duty to Switch, or say, the next Metal Gear Solid to XB1) where historical data suggests there is a good chance they won't make that money back?
Note this is not a defense of EVERY game that doesn't get ported. Such as Spyro Reignited not showing up on PC or Switch. Just that SOME exclusives do have to exist in a healthy ecosystem.
@Octane
No worries. I'm just using my line of reasoning to say that we really don't know how many/degree of anger gamers feel/felt about particular exclusives, this whole cross-platform thing, etc. We're limited to loud opinions, as we see on a daily basis, and sample sizes from internet forums/sites that represent tiny percentages of hardware/software owners who tend to be like-minded gamers.
In a way, I am arguing that we are almost completely ignorant, which I realize is frustrating and not fun to continue to discuss lol

Anyone know the cable length on the new Smash GameCube controller?? Also anyone had any experiences using one in other Switch games?? Might get one if it's supportedish by enough games.
@bluemage1989 I've heard around that the GCN controller adapter and controllers are compatible with the Switch and games. It's just that they act like Pro Controllers and the lack of buttons can sometimes cause issues for certain games that rely on like two shoulder pads.
@Harmonie yeah all I'd heard was that an update had added support for the controls and adaptor. Thought it would be cool for Smash but found it hard to justify the expense for one game but even if it got some use as a Mario Kart control and the occasional other game I'd be happy to buy the new Smash one on release (GameCube control is super comfortable) I'd hoped that seeing as its been put up for pre order today that there would be some details on cord length but guess I'll have to wait for more info.
@bluemage1989 I just tested out my old Wii U adapter and Smash GCN controller with Mario Kart 8 Deluxe and I can tell you it works just fine. In fact, I instantly felt less awkward controlling it that way than I do with the Switch Pro Controller.
The Switch adapter and GCN controller should be pretty much the exact same thing.
As for the length, I attempted to measure the length of the Wii U Smash controller's cord for you. It was a bit of a rough estimate, though (I was trying to use a tape measurer, which I don't have much experience with, and the GCN controller cord was not 100% straight), so forgive me if I'm off. It was somewhere in the range of 8 to 9 feet. That should give you an estimate, at least! I tried. lol
@AlternateButtons I never played Owlboy so I can't say anything about it. But for Hollow Knight, those points are pretty spot-on. About difficulty, your mileage may vary and it can be unforgiving at times. It can be easy to get lost and get stuck on certain bosses. But it's among my favorite Metroidvanias purely because of those reasons.

I run a YouTube/Twitch channel for fun. Check me out if you want to!
Please let me know before you send me a FC request, thanks.
About the GC controller, I think it'll stay being identified as a pro controller in all games but Smash so pretty much how people wanted it to function like on Wii U.
@Harmonie firstly thanks for taking the time to check it out for me it's much appreciated. I never did get around to buying one for the WiiU but will be getting one now for sure!! Its probably not going to be my main control but I can see it getting a lot more use than I initially thought especially for Mario Kart.
@AlternateButtons Hollow Knight is moody, certainly, but it's also full of little moments of humor. The world of HK is chock full of personality, and that organically leads to encountering characters and situations that are quite charming.
It's much less dour as an experience than, say, Super Metroid, which establishes a hostile, serious atmosphere and never really relents.
Difficulty-wise... it's fair. There are some viciously hard optional bosses in the late game, of course, but overall it has a challenging but manageable difficulty curve.
@AlternateButtons
Both are platformers, but from what I hear, Hollow Knight is more of a metroidvania experience than Owl Boy. So if you're like me and prefer your platforming a bit more straightforward, Owl Boy would be the way to go. Otherwise, go with Hollow Knight. For me, Owl Boy also wins in the aesthetics. I tend to enjoy things that are more light-hearted and bright.
@JaxonH I still think Ys VIII needed a better window than this. Region depending its either right before or same day as Wolfenstein and Crash, a week or less after Mario Tennis, and in the two weeks following are two more JRPGs.
