ARMS, Ultra Street Fighter 2 and BlazBlue are all beginner friendly but offer enough depth to keep you entertained.

I'd say SNK Heroines also would be a great choice.

Isn't Ultra Street Fighter 2 kind of a ripoff now that the Anniversary Collection exists?

@JaxonH @Grumblevolcano we had a great time and still do with Arms which is kind of what inspired wanting to go for another. She has only ever been casually into gaming but the Switch has really brought her into gaming a lot more and she is stoked for Smash this year but it would be nice to have another fighter to play until then.

Out of curiosity is there anything that makes Ultra Smash more newcomer friendly than the collection?? I thought she might have been daunted by the number of titles so I did think about Ultra. Where I live I have to import from the UK through a local retailer and there mark up and pricing structure means I'd be paying the same £60-£75 for either title so price isn't a decider for me. Also don't have eshop access here as we don't have debit or credit cards and importing eshop cards has been difficult.

@bluemage1989 Yeah, the fighting genre is rather hard to break into. Pokken seems to have simplified things relative to Tekken games, so that one might be a good bet. Rivals of Aether is like a mini Smash Bros, same with Brawlout. And if you enjoy the properties, that can make it easier to get into either DBZ or Naruto titles. As for the Street Fighters? Ultra Street Fighter is an HD remake of 2, which is just one of the many games in the collection. I don't think it's any more beginner friendly, though I could be wrong about that, Street Fighter has never been my thing.

@link3710 will definitely look into Rivals of Aether and Brawlout and try the Pokken demo with her. The big issue I've found is that I can play fighters decently I'm not super into them and don't devote huge amounts of time to them but normally get a good handle on games from the series I enjoy like MK and Injustice but my wife she struggles with the Xbox One controller and greatly prefers a single joy con set up she's also not the greatest at combos but I think a lot of that is because of the Xbox controller issue so Arms was a great game for her we put a lot of hours into that and while they did a great job adding content I think its time to find something new. She played Smash on WiiU with me a bit but she's looking at gaming a lot differently now she plays the Switch and becoming far more involved with the Switch than any othet console. The skills gap does make choosing a fighter hard especially compared to genres like platforming and racing where she is a lot more skilled.

@Grumblevolcano
Not by any means.

Ultra Street Fighter 2 is, imo, the only way to play SFII. It makes all other versions completely irrelevant. I simply cannot stand pixelated graphics for Street Fighter. I spent 10 years of my life playing pixelated games growing up, and I just don't want to do it anymore when we live in an age of technology that can provide smoother, higher fidelity graphics. I'm no graphics elitist and I don't need 4K or even 1080p. But it has to look smooth. I don't want to see a little square pixel dots all over the screen if given the choice. That aside (and there is still a pixel mode for the people who somehow prefer that style), it's just the ultimate version of Street Fighter 2, and even has added characters.

The Collection's value comes from the Street Fighter 3 games, although I admit there is some value in the nostalgia of owning all the other versions of SFII. But I will never play them given the fact I own Ultra Street Fighter 2. Of course, I still enjoy SF3 despite being pixel graphics (as I enjoy other games that are pixel graphics), but they look much better than SF2 graphically for one, and for two there's simply no better HD option for them. If there was I would be playing that instead.

Don't take this to mean I hate all pixelated games because I don't, but it's certainly not my preference. I was ecstatic to see Mega Man 11 finally upgrade into the HD era. Don't get me wrong- I love the original games to death and will always love them, but Idk if I could take another 8-bit Mega Man. It was time. It was...

Nintendo Switch Online is consider a "Successor" to Virtual Console

"The Virtual Console successor is Nintendo Switch Online, right? With the mentality that says we're going to be offering a slate of games, and it's a slate that's going to increase over time. For many of these games, there's going to be additional online capability provided in those games. That's the vision we have for how to best bring our legacy content to Nintendo Switch.

We do [believe people will subscribe to Switch Online], and I say that because what we've laid out is a proposition where, yes you get the competitive play accessibility, you also get the cloud save, and you get access to the legacy content. That's a fantastic proposition for $20 a year. We believe that it's not going to be any type of issue for us. In fact, it's going to enable us to continue offering a varied slate of opportunities from an online experience standpoint."

Decided to grab Golf Story since it's on sale, hopefully I'll enjoy it since I loved Mario Tennis on the GameBoy.

@JaxonH I’m pretty sure it’s still a ripoff with those HD graphics coming directly coming from Street Fighter II: Turbo HD which you could buy for $10.

My opinion personally is that while the HD graphics are definitely good to look at the lack of in-between frames annoys the heck out of me.

@Mrtoad
That's completely subjective.

As far as I'm concerned buying that game for $10 is a waste of money when it's on an outdated legacy platform at 720p without widescreen, no extra characters, modes or ability to toggle graphics (for those who care) and most importantly, only console play versus console + handheld + tabletop and instant SF2 matches anywhere.

They could give that game away for free and it still wouldn't diminish the value of Ultra Street Fighter II.

Btw, for those interested, Ultra Street Fighter 2 Digital code is half price on Amazon right now during the sale

Just my 2 cents on whether to go for USF2 or Street Fighter 30th. For me, there's no contest.

I'd take the pixel graphics of the Street Fighter Alpha and SF3 Trilogy over the HD USF2 any day.Second Impact and Third Strike especially look absolutely glorious. As pixel art goes they're as good as it gets and the variety of backgrounds is really great, some of them look stunning. Gameplay wise Alpha and SC3 are so smooth and I find them a lot more beginner friendly than 2 since the moves are easier to pull off due to less strict input commands. Then there is the huge variety of fighters, the majority of which are new. Plus you have the returning characters like Ryu, Ken, Chun Li etc with a few more moves in their locker. This larger range of moves for each fighter also means fights are a lot more interesting and unpredictable.

As for SF2 itself, which of course is still superb, the 30th collection has them all including Super Street Fighter 2 which has better graphics than SF2 Hyper, the version USF2 is based off. I'm not 100% sure on that last part though.

Playing Second Impact and Third Strike with the full screen ratio and border art running down the side really is a treat for the eyes.

I don't know why there's a debate on USFII vs SF 30th AC. No matter how much of a definitive edition of SFII is Ultra, we're still talking about 1 game vs 12(!). And for the same price!

EA never thought about Madden on Switch. So the backwards answer they gave prior was a lie. XD

To be fair, EA the publisher could have been thinking about it while EA sports the dev completely ignored it. But it shows the talks didn't come very far if they didn't even talked to the devs.

Thinking about it...I'm quite optimistic that Nintendo reach their target of 20 million systems this year - it's all about the messaging.

People seem to forget that they have a system with a mainline 3D Zelda, mainline 3D Mario, a new Smash, a new Pokemon, Mario Kart, Splatoon, Mario Party, Mario Tennis, Skyrim, Doom, Fortnite, Minecraft, Crash... Cram as many of those as possible into an advert that emphasises being able to play on the go? I'm sure they could hit that 20 million.

So, now that Nintendo's cards are out on the table, what does everyone's 2018 look like going forward?

My plan since purchasing a Switch has been not to let a substantial backlog develop, and I've done a pretty good job of that so far (I have a couple of unfinished games, but, in those cases, I got bored and quit, so I don't count them in my backlog). It's... going to get harder going forward.

Definite purchases:

  • Ys VIII: Lacrimosa of Dana
  • Valkyria Chronicles 4
  • Senran Kagura Reflexions

Possible purchases:

  • Super Smash Brothers Ultimate
  • Bloodstained: Curse of the Moon
  • Hyper Light Drifter
  • Shining Resonance Refrain
  • South Park: The Fractured But Whole
  • Octopath Traveler
  • Mega Man 11
  • Okami HD
  • Xenoblade 2 DLC (Torna: The Golden Country)
  • Mario + Rabbids DLC
  • Yooka-Laylee

Third parties to the rescue!

I'll probably get Pokemon Let's Go! Eevee to play with my nephew, but I don't know how much time I'll be spending with that on my own.

Off the top of my head

Mario Tennis Aces.
Wolfenstein 2
Crash Bandicoot Trilogy
Dark Souls Remastered
Okami HD
FIFA 19
Mega Man 11
Smash
Titan Quest
Hyper Light Drifter
SNK Collection
Psyvariar Restoration
Rival Megagun
Every single SEGA Ages title

Still to buy Splatoon 2 DLC, Outlast 2, Skyrim and LA Noire

There will be plenty more indies bought between now and the end of the year as well as loads more Arcade Archives, Neo Geo and shoot'em ups.

Plus I still reckon there's something that will launch along with the online subscription, we just don't know about it yet. Panic Button's title may come this year too.

Looking at it like that, I've got a fantastic 6 months of gaming ahead of me.
