Honestly makes sense, though that is unfortunate. That reminds me an awful lot of Retro Studios' initial rut before Metroid Prime, though. Remember Raven Blade and the like?

@Knighty_IX The troubled project may have been the rumoured new horror IP.

So they had something potentially great, canned it for some reason and started working on a Star Fox racing game of all things? I still don't buy it

If only for the fact that I've been waiting more than four years on this game.

A second project from Retro that’s been going through a rocky development, and could be cancelled, does make the Star Fox racer seem more plausible. Just hope they know what they’re doing, won’t end well if this too ends up being a dud.

My one thought on this whole thing is did they purposely leak this to gage interest. We've been askimg forever and a day what is Retro doing and their projects are usually even more tight lipped then Nintendo's own. Cant blame them if they did this on purpose to let off some of the backlash they might receive.

@Spoony_Tech Maybe some disgruntled employees leaked it. Purposely leaking something doesn’t sound like the kind of thing Nintendo would do, and therefore Retro I think would be the same.

@Octane The main thing I'm unsure about is the decision to not just use F-Zero.

@Grumblevolcano Yeah, that's what I also said over at PushSquare. Assuming it's true, why use the Star Fox franchise for a racing game? Star Fox as a franchise is in a pretty bad place right now, and I don't think it needs a spin-off at the moment. Meanwhile, people have been asking about F-Zero since the beginning of time, so why not a new F-Zero game if you're making a racing game anyway?

IceClimbers

@Grumblevolcano Star Fox is probably more widely known and would likely have more widespread appeal than F-Zero does. Plus it allows for space/air races with bigger variety in set pieces.

They should just do a crossover, which could be really fun. I mean, wasn’t Fox’s dad a racer in Fzero anyway?

@IceClimbers Except from a casual audience most people would probably just look at it, think of Star Fox Zero, and look away. F-zero makes more sense from a business and consumer stand point.

@Scrummer Most people didn't know Star Fox Zero existed

I think they're far more likely to think of 64 or Star Fox 2.

Well then it's good that no one from any casual audience played or cared about Star Fox Zero then :V

I mean, this does feel profoundly unfair to F Zero, but at the same time, the last console F Zero we got came out shortly before both Kirby Air Ride and Mario Kart: Double Dash, so Nintendo might do it anyway at some point.

This just made me realize that based on it apparently selling 5 million, SNES Classic probably sold more than Wii U ever did in any equivalent period of time. Yeah so between 5 million and people looking into it as a weird piece of Nintendo history in the past, probably more relevant than the 2016, sold less than a million, Wii U game.

Another reason why VC being dead is a shame, Star Fox 2 will forever be locked behind the SNES Classic.

Yeah it would be incredibly disappointing if Retro’s mystery game turns out to be a Star Fox racing game. I was hoping that they’d reveal a game in a genre usually not looked at by Nintendo (such as a more Western game) and one having a large single player quest, but we’ll see I guess.

Honestly the news Retro may have canned another project but gone ahead with....this...is pretty disheartening.

I mean said rumours also mention they consulted on Labo and Prime Trilogy which implies a re-release of that.

A racing game made by Retro that's set in space,is a cross between Diddy Kong Racing and F-Zero and stars the cast of Star Fox? For me it doesn't get any better than that. How could anyone be disappointed with a title like that?

@OorWullie Becasue it's not what anybody expected that's for sure. I bet once we all see it in motion and learn more about the adventure part we will fall in love but for now that's hard to picture.
