I do think DF has missed a truck there. It seems pretty certain that the port on the bottom of the Switch is standard USB-C which simply doesn't have the throughput to utilise extra processing in the dock. Otherwise I thought the stuff about power draw compared to the tethered consoles was very interesting.
He mentioned something similar in a Eurogamer article:
"Well, back in the day, a leak emerged from the Foxconn factory where the Switch was being manufactured. In some respects, the information provided was inaccurate - it put forward the idea of a much more powerful processor - but elsewhere, specifically in terms of the physical description of the machine and its innards, it proved 100 per cent accurate. And there is discussion in that leak of an 'advanced dev kit', which appears to feature 8GB of RAM, and a processor that's about the same size as the GP106 Nvidia chip found inside the GeForce GTX 1060. And on top of that, another processor - about the same size as the Switch's Tegra - is also described.
Assuming this isn't fantasy, this dev kit sounds rather like a completely integrated version of the existing Switch and a potential supplemental computing device - all in one developer-friendly device. The retail version would simply be a replacement dock for your Switch. To keep things simple, the Switch's GPU could be powered down completely, allowing for higher CPU performance in order to drive richer visuals, backed by additional cloud resources."
...so perhaps the theory is that, if they put enough tech in the Dock, the USB-C limitations could be worked around? - but even if, with some wonder of engineering, it were possible - we're still not talking about gains that would bring parity with rival consoles ("we'd still be looking at an under-powered processor set-up when compared to a prospective SCD's graphics unit. Multi-platform ports would, in some respects, still be out of reach.") ..so, aside from sharpening up the image a bit (which would perhaps be reasonably attractive for those with particularly large displays?) - I struggle to see what the appeal would be?
I think they'd be far better off just riding the Switch wave for as long as possible - then maybe bringing out a 'Switch 2' with updated internals, upgraded connections and perhaps a 'Power Dock' that'd actually bring something tangible to the table (4K?) (..assuming that they'll stick with the 'hybrid' concept - which I sure hope they will!)
Very interesting to see the relative power consumption of the current gen consoles - really puts things in to perspective! ..what a marvellous little machine Nintendo have created!
I made it safely to the beach last night but after driving for ten and a half hours I was too tired to post in the thread, so I just went to bed. Looking back on recent posts, looks like I made the right choice. Yeesh, guys.
But really, the threads I was following were just completely DEAD. Last evening I was checking back periodically, but no one has been saying a word of anything lol.
Anyways, I'll be paying for the online personally. The family plan seems like a steal lol. With enough people you can cut the costs down to Pokemon Bank costs.
True. Nintendo has every right to do whatever with their online. And I have every right to criticize it and not support it if I donโt think itโs good. @electrolite77

@Therad Ah that's what I thought. Got rid of my Desktop gaming computer a good while back due to lack of use and no space. Have newish Laptop but not sure how well it would work - streaming to TV. Had kind of hoped you could sort of buy a Steam Box/console thingy and just plug that into your TV and play stuff. Assuming I probably looked into this a long time ago and hit the same snag and therefore moved on and then vaguely remembered I was interested to see if I could actually get access to my Steam games library without having to game on a Desktop/Laptop again. A perpetual cycle for me most likely โบ๏ธ

You can of course just plugin a computer to the TV. Steam link is more for the gamer that sometimes want to sit in the couch without the hassle of moving the PC.
@Therad If I lived alone, I'd do it in a heart beat. Alas, I think my TV/media centre is clustered enough for the Mrs. tastes already. Plus, I have young children with curious hands, lol!
Will file it away in the grey matter for a future endeavour ๐

@rallydefault Also - who buys anything these days when it's not on sale
That is 110% irrelevant and just proves that you don't even know what you're talking about.
Doesn't matter if people only buy stuff on sale- that's beside the point. The point is that until the price is exactly the same as current mechanical hard drives are now then is going to be more expensive for them to implement. You follow? So just because it goes on sale for $50, that means nothing. No matter how you slice it, it's going to cost them more until the prices are equivalent. Or at least until future prices are equivalent with standard HDD prices today, where they can produce a console with the exact same permanent costs of today.
And no, I won't be proven wrong. Again, you come find me whenyou can get a standard m.2 42mm SSD for $50 normal price in the next 5 years. I can promise you... you won't. In fact the idea in itself is ludicrous
As you can see, prices aren't even decreasing... They're increasing! 18 month historical trend of increasing prices. Yet somehow, you assert those prices will be slashed by 80% in just 5 years? Please stop. And this, this is just average SSD price. The small, compact ones for portable devices are the most expensive kind on the market. Considerably more expensive than the average of all SSD types.

Price drop on South Park Fractured But Whole- $39.99 on Amazon. Wow. That was super quick. Game hasn't even been out a month yet. While sales do seem to be better than I initially feared, this does perhaps suggest the game did not sell quite as well as they were hoping. Either way it's a great deal for anyone who hasn't picked it up
@skywake
That's true, but it's not going to make some radical difference. All that will mean is that the prices will actually fall some. Which no one disputes prices will fall over time. They will. But they're not going to fall that far that soon. The 512gb m.2 42mm SSD I just paid $340+ for isn't going to be $49.99 by the end of this generation. It's just not.

@JaxonH A much better price point, but reports of game-breaking bugs make me hesitant to invest in it. When and if they patch the worst of the bugs, though, I'm definitely buying this.

@Ralizah
They did announce they're working on a patch, so it shouldn't be too long.
Really though it's the one side quest you want to avoid. My friend is almost done with the game, and never had any issues but he knew to avoid that optional quest from the start.
But yeah hopefully they will release the patch soon

I wonder if we will see Rage 2 by Bethesda announced as coming to Switch today? The reveal is supposedly happening today and going by Bethesda's previous comments they will be releasing their future titles on Switch. I think we will probably have to wait till E3 for a Switch announcement as big as that though.
Next Move, make an N64 Classic please!
i'll surly cash out the amount of money day 1!
