Some favourites of mine. First Donkey Kong Land, Dave Wise is a legend so of course it's great. But it's also kinda crazy how much he managed to get out of the GameBoy. It was also one of only a few games I had on my GameBoy as a kid so there's a HUGE amount of nostalgia for me.

World of Goo. It was a pretty significant indie release when it came out and a fairly novel mechanic. But the soundtrack is also phenomenal. This track that plays towards the end in particular really stuck with me

Hades as a more recent release, it's just generally the sort of music I'm into anyways

"Don't stir the pot" is a nice way of saying "they're too dumb to reason with"

Xenoblade Chronicles Ending Theme always gets me close to tearing up. An emotionally epic song to conclude a truly epic game.

@FX102A It's such a beautiful song, and a fitting one, being the only one composed by Yasunori Mitsuda. The lyrics are so good, and as are the English vocals. Even listening to it now is almost enough to make me tear up, because the journey was always so hard, so well fought and so earned.

Currently playing:
Final Fantasy VII Rebirth
Persona 4 Golden
Dragon Quest XI S
F1 23
Xenoblade Chronicles 2

Sonic CD's Japanese soundtrack is really good stuff - this is one of my favorite tunes from that game.

The whole soundtrack is incredible. I want it on Switch badly with both US and JP soundtracks like the PC version.

I love this beautiful stage music! Kind of Donkey Kong Country like...

Let's see:
The whole xeno- Franchise is a no brainer. Xenoblade 1&2, X, Xenosaga and gears all have a Soundtrack ranging from great to breathkaking.
Next is final fantasy with 9 being my favorite for music. 6,7,8,10 and 15 at least are absolutely amazing as well.
Actually anything from Yoko Shimomura is top tier: mario and luigi, parasite eve, legend of mana and even though i hate the game: Kingdom hearts probably got her best tracks.
The Legend of Zelda is up at the top as well, at least ranging from ocarina of time till Skyward Sword (in my opinion)
Donkey kong tropical freeze has a really awesome Soundtrack as well, far better than returns and since i am not nostalgic towards the older games, also better than those.
There is Lost Odyssey which blew me away back when i played it and the last story which was, soundtrackwise almost equally awesome.
Fire Emblem has recently grown to me a lot when it comes to orchestrated epic soundtrack, especially three houses and shadows of valentia.
Then there is Nier and Nier automata with those beautiful gibberish singing and now this is probably unpopular but i kinda dig Drakengard 1 soundtrack for its utter crazyness.
Octopath traveller had really awesome battle tracks, but kinda fell flat on the rest for me
Almost forgot witcher 3, that one was really unique too.
If i go atmospheric, i probably mostly love Metroid Prime Soundtrack
That new God of War also was kinda epic with those norse singing parts
If we go a bit more Indie then there is ori and the blind forest, undertale, child of light, hotline miami, katana zero, furi and octogeddon which i can remember for its soundtrack out of my head. I am sure there was more though.
Alright lastly, let me go really crazy and go VN games. Umineko and Higurashi have some beautiful, awesome and very atmospheric tracks and especially Umineko Soundtrack had me on the edge more than once.
Yeah and i guess that is my take on favorite soundtracks, good music makes a game so much better

BTW I think SEGA makes the best music in the games industry.

@Clyde_Radcliffe Yeah I love Sega music as well! They can really make some truly rad soundtracks. I should also mention that I dig the theme for Stardust Speedway as well, whether it's from Sonic CD or Sonic Mania.

@TheJGG Outatanding analysis of FE3H. I loved this soumdtrack to this and am sorry I didn't get an edition that included a CD. I remember hearing the game's music for the first time, in a trailer I think, and hearing one little dubstep phrase in the middle of the track, wondering where they were going with that dubstep - and sure enough, it turned out to be a thematic choice that really paid off in the end. I love that score so much.

Xenoblade Chronicles 1 and 2 both have outstanding scores. I have the CD for XC2 and love when it pops up in shuffle on my phone.

Going back a few years, Prince of Persia: the Sands of time blew me away with its use of music, especially one song that comes up during a cinematic interlude in the baths.

No one has mentioned Skyrim yet. That game is a real standout to me, the chanting of the Dragonborn theme being one of the most recognisable pieces of video game music.

Streets of Rage 4 is another one I love. Just some bopping pieces of action music with a funky vibe. I haven't even played much of the game, but the music is great.

I also have to give props to Sayonara Wild Hearts which is basically an interactive music video. I remember dying over and over at one point and thinking it wasn't so bad because the music was so beautifully integrated with the gameplay.

My favourites were always the Mario and Zelda soundtracks because I grew up with them, but the AC 2 soundtrack is amazing too

To keep this short and simple I'll just mention something recent instead of going through the long scroll of tunes from my entire history of gaming.

For me I gotta say Astral Chain. There's so many tunes in that game that give me serious Trivium, Dream Theater, and Symphony X vibes. When I cycle through those band's albums there's a lot of guitar riffs and drum beats that are spot on Astral Chain and vice versa. Love it!
