I'm glad I already have the Wii U version since March 2023, but I played the game just for curiosity and looks like I don't have much hype to continue the game as I'm not even a Zelda fan.
I think Skyward Sword was the more important one to bring back if you had to choose only one as it was the only mainline Zelda which didn't have reliable controls in its original form. It was actually playable on the Switch which can't really be said about the Wii version (my experience with the Wii version wasn't much different from the infamous E3 2010 demo).
Though I do hope for Wind Waker HD and Twilight Princess HD to be part of the remaining Switch lifespan, TotK DLC being deconfirmed does provide some hope.
I mean I’m one of the people that wanted Wind waker over skyward sword, but that’s just because I really wanted to play wind waker, I never played either. Isn’t this reaction a bit much lol. Never played skyward so I can’t say how good or bad it is but a lot of people enjoy the game! And a lot of people were happy to see it ported to the switch so I’m happy.
It's interesting the way people's expectations have shifted regarding rereleases. In the past people might have wanted a particular game to be rereleased but it wasn't taken for granted that it would happen or seen as a reason to get angry if it didn't. Nobody said things like 'there's no legal way to play Donkey Kong Land' in the DS era, it was just accepted that you had to have a Game Boy if you wanted to play a Game Boy game.
I'm not saying that was better or that people are wrong to expect games to be ported - Nintendo brought that upon themselves really, first with Virtual Console and then by porting countless older games to the Switch. That's why I think all foreseeable future Nintendo consoles need to be backwards compatible as far back as the Switch, so this library of classic games can be carried over and added to over time. I won't be getting rid of any of my consoles any time soon though.
Anyway, Skyward Sword is good actually.
Thank you Nintendo for giving us Donkey Kong Jr Math on Switch Online
I mean, I like Wind Waker. A lot. It’s probably my second favourite Zelda game. I’d be very happy if it came to Switch. But it’s very obviously inaccurate to say that it is not legally playable. It is. As is Ocarina of Time 3D. As is Majora’s Mask 3D. As is Mother 3. As is Nintendogs. As is Pokémon Fire Red. I could go on — for a very, very long time.
Obviously the degree of accessibility decreases as time goes on, and the case for a port grows stronger. But… well, there’s very little else to say that @Dogorilla hasn’t already said. The voice of reason has spoken.
@Pupuplatter Yeah, it's annoying unfortunately, Nintendo has been a bit bold breaking from the tradition of virtual console ports, where you could trust they'd port most big mario & zelda games. Those days seem to be over over for the Switch gen.
This switch version of Skyward Sword was my first time playing Skyward Sword. I definitely encountered a couple scenarios where the control scheme annoyed me, but I pushed through it, and there's some good zelda in there. If it was a bad zelda, I wouldn't have played it to the end.
Skyward Sword also has the novelty of a sword that DOESN'T break.😁🤣 Which was nice. And there's some cool dungeons. ....You do have to fly around to different destinations in Skyward, it's fine?, but you don't have to take painfully long sailing journeys, like in Wind Waker(GC).
**Skyward does start out a bit slow, like zeldas that came before Breath of the Wild. But I think pushing through it was worth it.
@Maxz
Also there are definitely "less accessible" games in the Zelda series than Wind Waker. A Link Between Worlds only exists on 3DS which is discontinued and the eShop is shut down. Spirit Tracks and Phantom Hourglass are playable on DS and 3DS and were technically available on Wii U but the latter is now not an option. Four Swords was just GBA and DSiWare, Four Swords Adventures never appeared outside of GC
Also technically Twilight Princess is equally as accessible as Wind Waker. Playable on GC, Wii and Wii U but not available anywhere else. Although you could well argue that there were more Wiis with WiiMotes than there were Wiis with GC Controller ports and GC Controllers
People acting like Skyward Sword is the worst game ever...it's not perfect, but I still enjoyed it, even the original despite the flaws that game had with controls. (that final boss was infuriating, lol) I need to finish the HD version, stopped playing it towards the end for some reason...maybe it's the Sky Keep dungeon, I hate that place. lol
Anyways, the game also has Koloktos, one of the best Zelda bosses in the series. lol
People who are mad about Skyward Sword are generally transparent about being bad at games that have remotely different control ideas. At least Star Fox Zero has the excuse of the more reasonable control option being an option you have to switch to, this one added more options to the original game that are clear that they are there.
Also in the case of both it also annoys me because they ignore that actual flaws of the games (Skyward Sword's feeling needlessly long, Star Fox Zero not understanding why 64 was heavily replayable, etc)
Honestly I can only play Skyward Sword with stick controls. It just feels more comfortable than having to keep changing positions to do different moves. Also, motion controls can be genuinely unresponsive sometimes- I never beat the purple coin version of Flip-Swap galaxy in SMG2, because the Wiimote didn’t always recognise when I shaked it- and that’s pretty basic compared to Skyward Sword’s controls.
