Gonna throw out a biggie but I feel as if they're totally building towards a completely Western created rep if the last few rounds of Mii costumes were anything to consider. Not like an indie rep or a Western created character associated with Nintendo like Dark Samus, K. Rool or Banjo, but a Western rep from a big Western AAA franchise. Honestly after seeing the Vault Boy Mii costume I'm totally convinced either DOOM Slayer or Dohvakiin from Skyrim are possible, as are other characters like Rayman or Crash if it's another platformer rep
As for a Capcom rep, Dante or Phoenix Wright are the only ones I can possibly see since we have a Street Fighter rep and I don't think a new Mega Man rep would be up for consideration unless it actually was Zero but you know, Assist Trophy
I'd also totally be down for Raiden from Metal Gear Rising (but the MK one would be really sick despite the fact Japan banned the series from being sold there but they were totally ok with DOOM for some reason)
@Shulkalot You think they'd do the last option? I mean there was Corrin but at that point Fates was already out in Japan. I doubt they'd do something big like having Sylux get a slot just for a promo of Prime 4 when it comes out in like 2029
Also I can't see them removing assist trophies from the game just to have them as playable characters. I feel like the whole "assist trophy deconfirms playable characters" thing has a lot of weight after the ARMS fighter turned out not to be Spring Man even though he's arguably the face of the game next to Ribbon Girl in all the advertising and on the box art

Oh no, what I meant to say with my last pick is a character from a game we 'curently' don't yet know about. We will know about it once the character gets revealed.
Regarding the assist trophy rule, I think everything can happen right now. Fans have come up with all sorts of crazy theories over the years for what can and cannot happen, only to be proven wrong eventually. Assist Trophies is the only one standing and that too will fall someday.
@Shulkalot Even then I feel like expecting another Konami rep of all things is a bit hard to do. Sakurai did an excellent job with Castlevania but I don't know if Konami is willing to commit to another rep, and even if they do, with same amount of content representing his series as Sakurai was allowed to do with CV

@Shulkalot Honestly my suggestion to Konami in that case is "please for the love of all that is Holy Water please stop making annualized mobile Castlevania games and Metal Gear spinoffs that crap on Kojima's legacy"
The only thing giving them any sort of positive publicity is the Netflix Castlevania show and that's just pathetic because they're just there via association with the IP

I would love to see Dante and Viewtiful Joe, just to have Kamiya's three greatest creations duke it out for official Champion of the Universe. Joe will never happen, though Dante is within the realm of possibility.

Travis Touchdown, really fun character from a really fun series which is associated with Nintendo and would be nice publicity for NMH3 and perhaps NMH 1-2 on switch?
Reimu Hakurei, while ill argue there´s better characters in Touhou she´s the main one and its the face of an enormous indie on japan. Id say it isnt as likely as some of the others here, but id love to see her facing against Travis since he was a otaku after all (im aware touhou is a game series, just in case)
Doom Guy, a character that would be perfect to represent FPS on smash. Iconic and quite popular atm thanks to 2016 and Eternal. Also, having an official game with both Isabelle and Doom Guy...
Heavy, another unlikely pick but i simply love TF2, easily my favorite first person shooter ever. I guess he would be easier to implement than doom guy because of the cartoony style, even if Doom Guy would still be the more likely pick.
Ryu Hayabusa, the only missing rep from the "really hard yet awesome trilogy" on NES, would be perfect alongside Megaman and the belmonts. Also a rep from a dev still not on smash, i believe?
@Shulkalot I would probably rather have anyone else from Xenoblade than Rex. He just seemed the most boring character and unless they tied him to Pyra or Mythra I couldn’t possibly see him being interesting.
I would prefer we get Nia, Elma, or the protagonist from Torna. They’re all much more interesting to me. Elma would be especially nice since we have so little Xenoblade Chronicles X content in smash.

I get where you're coming from, but Rex is the protagonist of that game. There's no way he'd get sidelined for somebody else, especially not if he gets tied to Pyra and Mythra like most of us suspect. He could be a cool "Reversed Pokémon Trainer" if you ask me.
Elma would be very cool as well. And I think she still has a chance, especially if Monolith Soft decides to make a sequel to XCX which continues the story of the original after that cliffhanger.
@Shulkalot I keep on wondering how the blade switch would change up Rex’s moveset. I don’t think his specials would completely change, I think they would make Pyra weaker but bigger hit boxes and Mythra could be stronger but have smaller hit boxes. I also wonder if they would also include you know who’s blade form or if they wouldn’t due to it technically being a spoiler.

They could also opt to include more blades than just Pyra/Mythra. Maybe we'll get only Pyra and two other blades like Corvin and Crossette to change up playstyles.

I have a fair few ideas for what I'd like to see, but I don't quite know what to expect. I do think Doom Slayer and Geno are next and personally find a Pokemon unlikely (they already did Spirits for Sword/Shield, Isle of Armor is already out, Crown Tundra doesn't have any good character additions on the cards); I also don't get why so many people are talking about Rex. Yes, Sakurai said that Xenoblade 2 and ARMS reps were possible for the base game but didn't happen because of time constraints. However, Nintendo is still the one picking the DLC here, and it makes way more sense for them to promote ARMS - it's a new IP of theirs, it's a fighting game, and they've been pushing it hard. Xenoblade Chronicles 2 may have released in 2017 as well, but since then it's received DLC that got a standalone release and the original got a remaster/remake, and it doesn't seem likely that Nintendo would choose a rep from it.
Personally, while many characters have a chance, I'd personally like to see Bandana Dee if we got anything else from a Nintendo IP, which could potentially tie into the next Kirby game - a very probable 2021 release. Next year is the 20th anniversary of Ace Attorney, which could bode well for Phoenix Wright. Minecraft has sold so much (including over a million copies in Japan on Switch alone) that I think Steve/Alex are extremely likely, and Ubisoft was recently hiring for what looks to be a new Rayman game, so there's that. Of course, I'd be happy with the vast majority of characters - I learned my lesson when I was underwhelmed by Terry, only for him to become one of the characters I play most, so as long as the character is a justified pick then I'll be content.
