@jowe_gv Man... That Sony streaming device ended up not being what I thought it was. It's a "Wii U" more than a streaming portable device. I mean... I don't know how I should take that. I never considered streaming only devices for streaming PS5 through mobile data to play a good idea (as I said earlier) but I don't know if this is actually worse.
Being able to play Wii U games in bed with my monitor off was comfortable (that is how I usually play games on my Switch anyway, fully portable) but... how many people would buy that for like the 150-200 dollars it is probably going to cost? You could basically buy a Switch for that.
Wii Daisy Circuit's graphics in the teaser screenshot much like GBA Riverside Park looks like it was created for the Booster Course Pass rather than just Tour but I really doubt they'd pick it over Koopa Cape or Rainbow Road which further gives the impression there's a 2nd Booster Course Pass.
@Grumblevolcano 2nd booster course pass? The current one is dropping 48 new tracks and even new characters. Isn’t 96 (base game tracks + dlc tracks) and over 40 racers enough?!
Wait, why do we need a Sigurd? I mean signature, jeez.

@TheBigBlue A natural evolution of MK8's approach would be MK Ultimate with "Everywhere and everyone is here!". Currently MK8 Deluxe has 80/162 tracks and by the time the Booster Course Pass is finished MK8 Deluxe will likely have over half the franchise's total tracks (the total will be more than 162 as Tour still gets brand new courses every so often) so it's at the point where more Booster Course Passes feels like the more likely approach to achieve that than Smash Ultimate's approach of create a new game. So like either Booster Course Pass 2 and then Booster Course Pass 3 or have Booster Course Pass 2 and then have a packaged version for the next Switch which has the missing tracks like @Professor_Plumber suggests.
Either way I do think MK8 will last longer than GTAV.
I reckon some sort of Mario Odyssey 2 for the back half of this year will help Switch become their best selling console ever and gain ground on the DS. Zelda and Mario can do a lot of the heavy lifting this holiday season I reckon.
As for their next console. They should start by making out it's a home console. Heck, they just need to show some 'miracle ports' and first party stuff then ask us 'What did we think?'' before then going to remove it from the dock (and the crowd go wild again)
@jowe_gv A dual sense wireless controller is what, 200 dollars on it's own? This Sony PS Q handheld is gonna be $300 minimum, if not closer to $400 knowing Sony. Which kinda reinforces your argument, but Sony have always fancied themselves as a premium brand like Apple, so they're hoping for customers who will buy anything with the brand on it. I mean just look at those earbuds!

@GrailUK@Professor_Plumber A 3D Mario game seems to take around 5 years to develop, and along with Zelda and Mario Kart is a huge system seller. Nintendo will want a huge game to launch the "Switch 2" and with TotK just released and Mario Kart DLC still being rolled out, I think the only option they have is for 3D Mario, therefore I can't see a release for it this year and when it does I think it will be exclusive to the new hardware.

You know, I'm still a fan of the Wii U concept generally so I'm not going to complain about what Sony is doing here. It's definitely a valid move that has some conceptual merit. But I think @TSR3 is right here. Sony sees themselves as a premium company and so will make this to a quality that goes well beyond what the Wii U GamePad was. And at that price and as a stand-alone device? It's hard to justify
And in any case, when the Wii U did it over 10 years ago there was no portable on the market that was even remotely capable of "home console grade" visuals. Even at resolutions that make sense for a portable device. Now there is.... and those options are far cheaper than a PS5 and whatever this GamePad-like device will cost. And they're also fully portable
I think this is too late too expensive to make sense
@MarioBrickLayer Fair enough. I just rckon if they started on Odyssey 2 after the first game, then it's on Switch hardware. Anything releasing with Switch 2 we have zero clue about. Could be anything. (Hoping for Monolith's new ip myself.) but it needs to play to the systems strengths. A 3D Mario game selling to 130 million users is much more attractive than being a launch title and would make a great swan song (along with Metroid Prime 4.). Especially this year what with the success of the movie. They'll have something lined up for launch, of course, but I'm happy with not knowing what. Usually, one game (maybe Mario Kart 9) and they let third parties get in on it.
@GrailUK what’s to say Odyssey 2 even exists? Galaxy 2, the only 3D Mario sequel which was originally planned to be a set of dlc for the first game but was made into a full one due to the devs having a lot more level ideas, was released just over three years after the first game. If odyssey 2 was a real game, or if Mario odyssey had dlc planned, it would have been at least announced by now. I’d say an entirely new 3D Mario game is probably ready by now, but it is being saved to help with the launch of the next console. TOTK is making big sales numbers, so that will probably be ported to the next console in similar fashion to BOTW’s Wii U/Switch and Twilight Princess’s GameCube/Wii cross Gen releases.
@TheBigBlue They aren't going to coast through the holiday season. Both Japan and USA said they were going to be bullish this year. And if they are introducing a new gameplay feature then it's the norm for them to be very quiet about it. I only use Odyssey 2 as an example. It could be something else entirely. The Switch is hardly on it's last legs. I'll concede it's past it's peak, but folk are too eager. Nintendo still have a bunch of extension strategies to use (like TotK recently and maybe a price drop later. But another big game for the holidays is a no brainer.)
@GrailUK Agreed, I get the feeling that when the next Direct happens it'll give the impression that the next hardware is far away and if sales are good enough new hardware will be moved even further away. That's what Nintendo wants, isn't it? They're understandably really worried about the next gen transition given what happened with past transitions so any opportunity that delays that transition as much as possible would be appreciated by them.
@Grumblevolcano Sure. If we get Metroid Prime 4 and something huge for holidays (I'm sure a Mario game releasing around the blu ray release of the film would be good) then I would be inclined to think new hardware next year. If not...then I would be very confused as to why they are abandoning the Switch like it's a Project Q-oops, I mean the Wii U.
They can't push hardware indefinately, mind. Switch will one day hit that decline cliff folk seem to think it's at now (you can't help some people.) Best to have a road map and be able to control messaging etc etc yadda yadda but the main drive for new hardware has to be Nintendo's game ideas first and third party parity second. They got it spot on with Switch. I'm sure they'll manage it again. They are much cleverer than I am lol.
