Topic: Question about charging the Switch

I recently ordered a Lite and was wondering if there is any difference between charging the Switch through a wall outlet compared to a power strip.
Nintendo specifically tells you to use a wall outlet on their support page. Now I'm a bit worried I can't use my power strip which is set up behind my TV.

Yeah shouldn't cause any problems, mine is connected to a power strip behind my TV (I have far too few wall sockets for basically anything in my house to not be connected to a strip).

Of course, the usual disclaimers apply: if you've bought a bad / low quality strip, or you've overloaded it with other plugs, you could hit problems. I am not an electrician, operate at your own risk, consult local resources etc.

@Columbo199X I think that's legal speak for "use regulation standard outlets". If you have a power strip, make sure it's from a store/brand you can trust.

Since Switch launch 2017, I've been plugging my Switch ac adapter into a heavy duty power strip because, I needed more outlets, and I want surge protection from storms. I imagine many people that dock the console to a tv also plug into a power strip, because of many people have more than two things to plug in by the tv. (I know you have a Switch Lite, but the Lite is just a Switch minus the video output hardware.)

@WoomyNNYes will non Nintendo chargers damage the system over time?
I usually use my phone charger for mine as I'm too lazy to swap out the plug.

@Mr-Fuggles777 yeah so, the usb-c standard is a mess. Non-Nintendo USB-C cables should be fine in theory, but in practice some cables have apparantly been found to cause damage. I don't know the exact reason why - apparantly Nintendo's implementation of usb-c is bit non-standard (although with the mess the standard is, near enough everyone's implementation is non-standard in some minor way or another), might be delivering power down the wrong contact or too much power or something. No idea.

In my personal experience, I've used lots of different USB-C cables over the years to charge my switch and nothing's caused any issues with it yet. I just try to make sure I'm using cables from reputable suppliers. Your mileage may vary.

@Mr-Fuggles777 Ah, crap. Your question made me realize something. I've used a Ravpower usb-c power bank. That & phone chargers are essentially a third party chargers, right? So, I've edited my post above, removed the part that said "only charge with nintendo branded ac adapter", because I haven't followed my own advice, and I realized I don't know enough to comment on phone chargers.
