Considering the article is almost a decade old, it's probably less true now. Especially considering PC digital storefronts like Steam offer full refunds if you play a game for less than two hours inside two weeks of purchasing said game. Still, I imagine there's still some truth to demos negatively impacting game sales.

@Fizza Worth noting, Sonic Boom Rise of Lyric and Sonic Lost World had demos on the Wii U. Played them both, not that it was needed for me, I ended up getting both games. They were fun to have while I was waiting to buy Sonic Lost World, or in Sonic Boom's case, waiting for Christmas that year (yes, I do like the game despite popular opinion).
@Link-Hero@Snatcher I would agree with you both. Usually the lack of a review copy may hint something is being hidden. This is coming from someone who doesn't use reviews when buying games either.
Also, wouldn't that mean lots of other game companies are hiding something if no demo comes out? If that's the mindset. Example, I didn't get a demo to Super Mario Odyssey, I guess Nintendo must be hiding something. Just pointing out how silly it sounds, at least to me since I never thought that way.
Just food for thought.

To compare the quality of output of Sonic Team and Nintendo may be one of the most absurd things I have ever read on the internet. Nintendo has the occasional misfire, where Sonic Team has since the Xbox 360 had nothing but misfires.
I think there's no demo because of reducing spoilers and leaks. SEGA already banned gameplay from being recorded at Gamescom because of story spoilers and releasing a demo on console stores would lead to spoilers, maybe even leaks.
@steventonysmith My apologies if my example gave you that impression. The point of my example is that just because a game does not have a demo, does not mean developers are hiding anything. More or less I was trying to think of a game without a demo, so not the best example, my apologies on the confusion. Even games that aren't received well critically have gotten demos, Sonic 06 comes to mind.
As @Link-Hero and @Snatcher mention, usually when review copies don't go out, there is a chance the developers could be hiding something. Most people will look to a review to see what the game is like, or how the game is, so usually not sending out a review copy means they could be hiding something. This may not always be the case, but sometimes it is.
@steventonysmith AHEM ACkchalully Sonic has quite A deep and complichatedd Loer. Umm in Sonik 06 there's a fyr monstr and he summons a mephi which combines wit teh fyr monstr to mek a mega mephi then they blow on a smol fire and teh geme guts decanunised.
Lol, I'm kidding obviously, Sonic doesn't have a crazy lore at all, I am actually quite interested to see what this game does though. Hopefully it can be like when the story was decent in Adventure 1 and 2

No demo doesn't mean the game is going to be bad, or that they're hiding something, but either way I just don't think this game is going to turn out good. I'm not a sonic fan myself, and I never really played many of the games, but this one here just looks bad on a technical level, at least from the footage I've seen. Giant empty areas, and structures just kind of floating in the sky randomly. It looks ugly, like they just kind of tossed Sonic into an unreal engine test map and then put a few obstacles on it.
"It is fate. Many have tried, yet none have ever managed to escape it's flow."
@VoidofLight We later learned that all that IGN footage was an earlier-unfinished model of the game, there's been demo events and early-impression short game reviews after said footage and most have really positive opinions. Heck, Sakurai even said he liked it.
I'm being very cautious but with those combined facts, the fact that Ian Flynn came on for story, and the music being actually good (imo) I have decent hopes for this game.

As others have stated, I don’t see why there being no demo should suddenly be a terrible thing. Plenty of good games that I played that didn’t have a demo, I just checked out reviews instead. Sonic frontiers already has enough bias against it because of it being a 3D sonic game, no need to grasp at straws to add onto it. We live in a world where informing yourself abut games is the easiest it’s ever been once they’re released. Let’s plays/streams of said game, reviews from various different sources, articles with info surrounding the games before and after release… I’m sure at least the first two options should help in making an informed decision on if you want to purchase the game or not. I like demos too, but not having one included isn’t a stab at a game’s quality, no matter how negative sonic team’s recent track record is.
I keep buying fighting games for some reason, even though I barely got anyone to play against.
