@dionysos283 This is a great addition to the conversation! I did some small research and actually found the opposite for some ports.

Super Mario 3D World on Wii U was 1.7GB, and the game with Bowser’s Fury is 2.9 on Switch. I imagine the game is smaller, and that Bowser’s Fury takes up more space.

Super Mario 3D All-Stars also is quite large. Super Mario 64 is less than 60MB, Sunshine’s around 700MB, and Galaxy’s about 3.1GB. Add those together and there’s 0.8GB left. I imagine that’s for high quality soundtracks...

Xenoblade DE is also larger than the original by about 5GB though that game had a significant texture overhaul, plus an entire epilogue and over forty re-arranged tracks plus the eight or so for the epilogue.

Currently playing:
Final Fantasy VII Rebirth
Persona 4 Golden
Dragon Quest XI S
F1 23
Xenoblade Chronicles 2

@TheJGG
It's a bit of a complicated equation. Compression and load times is a bit of a balancing act between CPU, storage speed and storage capacity. The more a game is compressed the more it hits the CPU but you you reduce the file size and are less reliant on fast storage. Less compression means it takes less CPU but you're taking up more storage and you're more reliant on that storage being fast.

The Switch has a faster CPU and faster storage than the Wii U so it can kinda go either way. They can use more compression making for smaller games and take the CPU hit, which is a fairly good option for less resource intensive games (like DKC:TF). Or they can go with a larger game size with less compression and open up more CPU resources which might be a better option for more resource intensive titles (3D World).

Really, depends on how big the game is generally and what the priority is.

@Slowdive @Grumblevolcano The is a 20+ minute video discussion just gone up on Spawn Wave with Nate The Hate where they discuss Game Pass coming to the Switch, they end the video saying they think there is a good chance of an announcement in the next 12 months.

@Giancarlothomaz I think it's entirely possible. We were promised news this year, and there's no better time than e3 honestly.

@VoidofLight yes, when Eji Aonuma stated in the february Direct we have to wait a little longer for more information regarding Legend of Zelda Breath of the Wild 2(i already imagined they gonna show the game at E3 2021, now that Nintendo is confirmed they gonna do a Nintendo Direct at E3 again).

@Giancarlothomaz It's the main reason I'm excited for this E3 honestly, since it's about time we learn more about the game itself. I swear that I keep analyzing the same trailer over and over again.

@Giancarlothomaz I'm worried Nintedo doesn't want to muddy the waters of Skyward Sword's July 16 release with a BOTW 2 presentation in June at E3. And maybe Nintendo will wait until september to reveal/announce BOTW 2. I'm not saying I want that, but Nintendo seems prefer focusing on one big release at a time. Forgive me, if that's pessimistic.

edit: although, Splatoon 2 was a July release, and Nintendo still showed off Mario Odyssey at june/E3. But man.... since the pandemic, silence has been the trend.

@WoomyNNYes I mean, that's a possibility, but I doubt Nintendo would make a big fuss over a port of an old Wii game that'll have no new content what so ever.

BotW2 is most likely the headliner this year, yeah, maybe alongside the confirmation of a Switch Pro (Nintendo really hasn't shown off new hardware at E3 in a while, but IDK a better time to confirm it if it's releasing alongside BotW2 like everyone expects). There's several other big games I could easily see them showing this year, some combination of Metroid Prime 4 (probably just another teaser trailer though, I don't expect to see actual gameplay until next year), Bayonetta 3, 2D Metroid, Metroid Prime Trilogy, Mario Kart 9, Super Mario Odyssey 2, 3D Kirby, DK, and more Zelda 35th anniversary stuff (and whatever we don't see this year I strongly suspect we'll see next year, along with Splatoon 3 which I think will get more focus next year). I'm not as sure they'll show up in the Direct, but I also think Pokemon Brilliant Diamond/Shining Pearl and Pokemon Legends Arceus will show up at Treehouse (if not at E3, Game Freak will probably drop new trailers and info for these games in May/June).

@Bolt_Strike Yeah, I feel like a Pokemon direct could happen in May, revealing new info for Diamond and Pearl's remakes and maybe a small bit of info for Arceus.

@Bolt_Strike I suspect Splatoon 3 will be May 2022, so it may never see an E3 appearance... who knows? Hardware is almost always 2-3 months before launch, so I'd expect that at the September direct unless they launch it late summer to try and avoid stock issues.

@TheJGG I'd wager all the extra space on 3-D All Stars is also for: Two separate emulators. The entire original ROM of Galaxy being included alongside a ported version of the GPU side. Higher quality textures that are injected at runtime, rather than being in the ROMs (the ROMs have the original textures). But honestly? Most of it is probably the FMVs from Sunshine, given they're stored at 1080p, and the audio tracks were 'remastered' too. But in any case, anything emulated by definition is not going to be smaller than the original, since the entire original file is stored in the game.

I just realized there's a real possibility that Nintendo pulls a 2018 e3, but with Splatoon 3 instead.. where it's the main focus, and all they talk about for 30 minutes.

I think Splatoon 3 got revealed in February to explain the smaller scale Animal Crossing updates.

@Grumblevolcano That'd kind of suck if it were the main reason. Development on New Horizons slowed because Splatoon 3 is being prioritized. Especially when New Horizons is lacking incredibly in content right now, and instead of making up for it, they're making a sequel to a game that's still actively being played and already has a switch entry.

@WoomyNNYes i understand your concern regarding Legend of Zelda Breath of the Wild 2, but Legend of Zelda Skyward Sword HD don't seen to be a huge game for Nintendo to focus,@Bolt_Strike i agree that Legend of Zelda Breath of the Wild 2 is very likely to be one of if one the main focus of Nintendo E3 Direct Presentation, just like they did in 2016 with Breath of the Wild, Splatoon 3 seen to be a summer 2022 game, and yes i expect and hope the reveal trailer of rumored and higly antecipated 2D Metroid game that continues the Metroid Fusion history on E3, beside some games.

@VoidofLight Well it's been almost a month since the last update (March 18th) and we don't know when the next update is. Before that update you knew when the next update was coming in advance so for example the late January 2021 update trailer announced an update for March 2021, the November 2020 update trailer announced an update for late January 2021, etc.

@Grumblevolcano That's true. It's worrying that these updates are slowing down, and probably halting.

member this?
I was console-less & didn't pay attention to E3 in summer 2016, so this was new to me, just now. Epic.

I suppose this is still the future for anyone more than 5.5 light years away.
