E3 has been losing it's relevance even before coivd or Sony pulled out from it, even Reggie has been skepitcal of it despite it being the place he became a meme. E3 as a digital only event this year seems pointless so I can see Ninty just doing a Direct when they want to rather than having to just because it's E3 time.
They're set for an online E3 this time, @TheJGG .... With some of the other stuff that 'replaced' it last year going as well! Since Nintendo do their directs in a similar way whether it's E3 or not, though, it won't really make much difference to that
@Bolt_Strike I think you're overestimating E3 and underestimating Smash. Latest info showed E3 hadn't yet gotten the support from publishers for E3 2021 so it could be that publishers abandon E3 just like last year. In addition, 2 out of the big 6 E3 shows (Sony, Nintendo, Microsoft, Bethesda, Square Enix, Ubisoft) are pretty much guaranteed to be gone if it did happen. Sony dropped out of E3 after 2018 so I doubt they'd return meanwhile Microsoft bought Bethesda so separate events are probably out of the question, especially as Microsoft doesn't have much incoming that's unrelated to Bethesda in the somewhat near future.
Also there's the situation about Skyward Sword HD, revealing any meaningful info about BotW 2 (especially release date or window) would sabotage Skyward Sword HD's launch. Finally, Nintendo would likely want to showcase games launching around the new Switch revision's launch on the new hardware. Especially if stuff like BotW 2 on the base hardware is as rough on the base Switch as Age of Calamity.
I only think we'd see BotW 2 info at a "E3 2021" Direct if E3 2021 was cancelled and the Direct took place in late July.
Meh, BotW 2 was announced less than a couple years ago, I doubt it'll release in 2021. Having it as a launch title alongside the Switch revision in March 2022 is more likely. I can see the marketing campaign already. "Nintendo is celebrating five years of hybrid gaming with the release of new hardware and a sequel to 2017's award-winning best-selling game Breath of the Wild."

@TheJGG@Grumblevolcano Even if E3 is cancelled, they'll probably have a Direct about that time of year. They need to release one around that time to announce their holiday lineup.
If there is an E3, the announcements are going to be focused on new, big games. Smash DLC will most likely be there, but DLC for a 3 year old game, even one as big as Smash, is not going to have as much of a draw as a new entry in one of their top tier IPs. And we happen to have such an entry coming in BotW2.
As for Skyward Sword, that all depends on when the Switch Pro and BotW2 launch. Again, if they want to release it during the Holiday, which is the most ideal time for them to release it, they pretty much have to announce it at E3 time. They need that much time to cover it. If they wait until 2022, then maybe they will wait until after Skyward Sword, but if it's a 2021 release they need the 6 month or so for marketing.
@Bolt_Strike I don't think there's an actual rule about how they MUST announce games 6 months before it launches as they have released a few games with less than 6 month's notice already.
Yeah, we've seen some Switch games with only a couple months between announcement and actual release. Astral Chain, announced June 2019, released August 2019. Paper Mario TOK, announced in May 2020, released in July 2020. In all honesty, 2020 is the year that E3 died.
I doubt a single platform holder or major third party publisher will provide any exclusive news or information for an E3 digital event when they can distribute that information on their on terms.

They revealed Super Mario 3D All Stars and 3D World both at the same time. Both rehashes (rather than one rehash and one new game), but there's at least precedent. Also, Diamond & Pearl remakes were revealed at the same time as Pokemon Legends. So revealing BotW2 during the Skyward Sword release window wouldn't be too unusual, especially if preorders are looking weak or something. If there is an E3 presentation from Nintendo, they have to reveal their main holiday title if there is one (if there isn't one again, they'll likely skip E3).

I hope you're wrong, since nearly all of those events last year sucked. Bring back E3 instead of pretending anyone cares about State of Play outside of FFVIIR.
We shall see. I have to admit that a part of me appreciates having several months worth of video game news condensed into a singular event like E3. Where some of the more interesting announcements tend to trickle to the wayside as bigger franchises get the lion's share of coverage during the event. But I truly believe the ESA are struggling to remain relevant.
They're now unable to sell event floorspace for millions of dollars.

They have only been using the floor space for attendees to play games etc for the past few years. The treehouse events could even go ahead with a lockdown, the staff/presenters could just go into quarantine for a couple of weeks or each presenter could be in their own mini studio.
@Magician Astral Chain was announced in February 2019. Pre-pandemic Nintendo generally announced their full year lineup by the end of March with the odd surprise here and there afterwards like Super Mario Party and Super Kirby Clash.
But last year shows Nintendo doesn't have to reveal their holiday lineup until September unless Sony and Microsoft go all out which they didn't last year and probably won't this year.
The big PS5 releases of 2021 are likely Ratchet & Clank and Horizon Forbidden West (maybe also Horizon Zero Dawn Remastered) with all the other big releases like God of War sequel and GT7 delayed to 2022. Meanwhile the big Xbox releases of 2021 are likely just Halo Infinite, there's rumours of Forza Horizon 5 but to be honest the Series X|S upgrades and Steam release of Forza Horizon 4 makes it seem very unlikely.
@Grumblevolcano The idea that Nintendo would continue to rely on the DLC for a two year old game for hype, is not appealing. Not just for people who don’t play it, but for people who do. This’ll be the last one so no doubt it’ll be a thing in a potential E3 Direct, but if that takes centre stage instead of something that is finished or at least worthy of a trailer (anything really, just not Smash) Nintendo, while they know the source of the hype, come across shameless.

@jump Honestly you’d think the gap between announcement and release would increase because of the slowdown with supply chains and logistics, when it comes to physical copies. But giving them out two months before release (Age of Calamity) or in some cases fifteen days (3D All Stars), implies Nintendo must have real confidence they can get everything done timely.
@Magician@kkslider5552000 As the latter says correctly so for me at least, I didn’t really care much for the recent State of Play except for FF7R: Intergrade. That and Kena, but that’s a while back yet. It’s better for all the announcements to take place orderly, in the space of a few days. I’d have that tab open for the whole day if virtual E3 happened.

E3 is an event, Nintendo Directs are kind of an event, Playstation Experience is kind of an event (is that still a thing?), with nearly everything else your time is being wasted, just go to your preferred site for the news when its over.
Just have your event during that week, and have it all be over with. Like even if E3 doesn't happen this year, do everything in a week.
@kkslider5552000 Why does everything have to be done it a week though? It will still have the same problem of E3 where everything announced is made to compete with each other so you will have losers and winners with some great games getting ignored which seems against the spirit of trying to find the audience for these games.

I took it the other way, they are announcing the release dates on short notice once the gears are in motion so they can be sure it can be completed in time rather than they are announcing dates and then scrambling to get it done in time.
@kkslider5552000 The last annual Playstation Experience in December (with announcements stream + physical event) was in 2017 though there was a physical event (no announcements stream) in Bangkok in August 2018. I think the E3 2018 mess massively changed Sony's perspective on events so they scrapped both E3 and Playstation Experience with the Direct style State of Play being the replacement.
I personally wouldn't say disappointing, but I get where you're coming from.
