@jump I suppose that's a fair counterpoint; my reply is that 3DS games were also generally less resource-intensive to develop. I've looked into development cycles in greater depth and I was surprised that Wii U and 3DS games generally took the same amount of time and comparable staff sizes to create. In any case, developing for a handheld system is not quite the same as developing for a more powerful console, mainly for graphics which are way less detailed on all 3DS game than they are on any high-profile first-party game on Switch.

The other point I had made about the ever-increasing standards of polish and detail still stand and I'd speculate that's the main reason why games take longer to develop now; talking Mario for example, you're going from a safer, linear, graphically simple platformer like 3D Land which took "over 2 years" to make according to Miyamoto, to Odyssey which more inventive, open-ended, and generally grandious by comparison, which took roughly four to develop and roughly 1.5x the staff size eyeing at the credits. It's likely they took their sweet time with Odyssey but the gap in dev time is justified.

And as I was saying, I feel the lower-quality first-party games which filled schedule in the previous gen is mostly missing this time around. Nintendo is choosing to rely on ports and third-parties to round out the schedule instead, which is a different approach than what they did a few years back.

@skywake I agree that most people tend to rate Directs depending on what titles garner their specific interest. That's a valid approach, I just wish people would admit that it's a purely subjective review at that point and don't try to pass it off as an objective statement about their quality.

Agree about lineup for the most part, I do think Skyward Sword should be placed higher though. Many people take it for granted by now, but I remain skeptical that we'll see more re-releases of old Zelda games until I see an official announcement. For the time being, Skyward Sword will complement Breath of the Wild and allow newer Switch players to experience the classic style of 3D Zelda games alongside the open-world style that seems to be the new direction going forwards. With Link's Awakening remake offering a glimpse of the 2D games, I'd go as far as saying that porting even more Zeldas on Switch could be overkill — especially if people are expecting three or four!

@brendathecat
Unless I'm missing something it's worth noting that of all the games in the Direct the only games for the second half of this year were Skyward Sword HD, No More Heroes 3 and probably Star Wars Hunters. Everything else was either first half of this year or a teaser for 2022 (Splatoon 3, Project Triangle Strategy). And I'm fairly sure pretty much everything in this Direct was new.

Fairly safe to say there will be something meaty in the tail end of 2021. I mean if I was Nintendo and I didn't have anything at all big for the end of the year I would've been pushing the release date of some of these titles back to fill in the holidays. You don't release Mario Golf in June if the only thing you have new on the shelf between October and Christmas is Star Wars Hunters

@skywake Yeah, it seems pretty clear to me that they're just holding back the games scheduled for later in the year for another time. We'll get Pokemon news in a separate presentation if there is any and Nintendo could be planning some sort of E3 Direct which they'd need announcements for as well. Can't just show all their cards in February.

Whilst a direct would make sense around E3 time, I am not sure why so many people are expecting this to happen. We just waited over 500 days for the last general direct. Nintendo were very quick to mention that not only were they not attending E3 last year (due to understandable reasons with Covid-19), but that they wouldn't even be having the usual digital event. You could argue Covid again, but I think Nintendo just want to march to their own drumbeat at this point. Last year, Nintendo just dropped first-party announcements on Twitter when they felt like it. No rhyme or reason for it. I don't think Summer/E3 is a reliable marker for expecting stuff from Nintendo anymore.

I would like to be wrong of course.

Signature, huh? Where do I sign?

BenAV

@MS7000 They might not do a Direct but at the very least they'll shadow drop trailers like last year. We'll get more announcements for this year in one form or another.

This displeases me.

@toiletduck I felt the Zelda news was more a sign that BotW 2 isn't releasing until 2022 at the earliest and perhaps the reason only Skyward Sword HD was announced is more towards the general opinion of Skyward Sword (generally considered the worst 3D Zelda). If they announced at least 1 of OoT, MM, WWHD or TPHD for a few months later the sales of Skyward Sword HD would suffer.

Meanwhile Mario Odyssey's existence solved the big problem people had with 3D World (people were desperate for a 64/Sunshine esque 3D Mario) so 3D All Stars probably won't affect 3D World's sales much if at all.

@Grumblevolcano yeah makes sense. I still have OoT for my 3DS, but I have a hard time getting into the controls with the small stick. How would you rate the chances that we can expect OoT on Switch before BOTW2? I'm not particularly in hurry, but I may end up playing OoT on my 3DS after all...

I think this is a pretty bad take. Frankly the "general opinion" of Skyward Sword isn't the general opinion, it's the fan forum opinion. For the average consumer it's a Zelda game, all of which are relatively well received. I don't see any reason why a Skyward Sword HD would do any worse than Twilight Princess or Wind Waker.

I think it's simpler than that, I think they intended to remaster all three of the Wii/GC Zeldas before they started work on BotW. It's just that there hasn't really been the space in the lineup or development space for Skyward Sword. So Skyward Sword comes out now, between Links Awakening HD and BotW2. Would it make sense to still do Twilight Princess and Wind Waker HD? I think so, but I think it makes sense to do a HD remaster of Skyward Sword on Switch first.

Why not MM or OoT? It would take a LOT more development effort to bring those titles upto a "HD Remaster" standard. Purely because I don't think people would be as willing to pay full retail for an "emulated with nicer textures" effort. Unless it was a compilation release. I think it makes more sense to save the N64 Zeldas for a launch of N64 on Nintendo Switch Online

@Snaplocket
I'm with you on this.
I was pretty disappointed by the Direct yesterday. But I think, I had some reasonable expectations, like a new Mario + Rabbids, or HD versions of Windwaker and Twilight Princess, or some news about BOTW2. But that's life. Doesn't mean you can't have expectations.

@dionysos283
How many times are they gonna sell these games.
Windwaker/HD
You can play on the gamecube or the Wii or the hD version on Wii U
Twilight princess/HD
Same for this

Do people want Nintendo to keep releasing the same games over and over again.

I would prefer these to be eshop virtual console services

@skywake The most I think would be done with OoT and MM is what was done with Mario 64 in 3D All Stars.

@toiletduck I think there's a good chance especially if 64, Sunshine and Galaxy aren't completely gone after March 31st.

Oh right, predictions:

1. Zelda Port/Remaster/Emulation - Yup
2. Disgaea 6 - Nope
3. SMT III Release Date - Nope
4. Animal Crossing Anniversary Update - Yup
5. Crash 4 - Nope
5. Lego Star Wars: Skywalker Saga - Nope
6. Several Star Wars Ports - ...we got one new title?
7. Wii U port (Woolly World) - Nope, it was Miitopia from 3DS instead
8. Megaman something - nope
9. Sonic something - Nope
10. Smash Character Reveal 2.4 - Yeah but... Announced

So I was pretty off this time on the specifics and everything third party. I enjoyed it though, Project Triangle Strategy is the FF Tactics successor I wanted, Splatoon 3 is amazing, and I've always wanted to try Miitopia but never got it while I was still playing 3DS. Plus, we finally got Famicom Detective Club woo! And the new daganrompaesque game looks super cool too, plus finally a chance at Ninja Gaiden Trilogy.

There was very little that didn't interest me tbh, mostly Zelda, DC Superhero Girls, Plants vs Zombies, Apex Legends and Mario Golf.

Oh and I totally called that they wouldn't acknowledge Zelda's anniversary when they released the port, repeatedly!

@WahooTime If they were bundled together, it would be fine. But I just know that Nintendo is going to release them for $60 individually. It never should have been done on the Wii U to begin with. Other companies bundle together their HD remasters (just look at Kingdom Hearts) and the prices drop rapidly. Nintendo rips us off and that really ticks me off.

I agree which is why I don't think they'd be that compelling. Certainly not as much as Skyward Sword can be for a similar amount of effort. Which is why I said OoT and MM would make more sense as titles to push an expansion of classic games Nintendo Switch Online. Maybe a 3D AllStars type collection with both of them and maybe Twilight Princess in a bundle.

WahooTime wrote:

As long as people keep buying them. But lets be realistic here, how many people who own a Switch and are interested in Zelda had a Wii U? Probably not that many given the Switch is selling more units every year than the Wii U did over its entire life.

This is the reality of games being ported to the Switch from the Wii U, all of them have sold more copies on Switch than they did on Wii U. Every single one of them. And while some people are buying it again on Switch by definition it's not everyone if it's selling more copies on Switch. Especially when in some cases the game is selling more than double the number of copies on Switch.

I think it's fair to say that if you brought the game on Switch and you already had it on Wii U? You're in the minority. For most people the Switch version is the only version they ever played.

Also for what it's worth Skyward Sword sold ~3.5mill copies on Wii. Given 3D AllStars has sold 8.5mill, BotW on Switch is the best selling Zelda ever and Link's Awakening HD moved 4.5mill? I think Skyward Sword HD will sell more copies than the original did on Wii

Btw, am I the only one unimpressed by the Zelda joy cons? They are just blue with a few symbols on it. Tbh, looks like a cheap third party design to me. But I'm happy that other people like it.
