Luigi's Mansion 3 was mentioned in the September 2019 Direct announcement tweet and was only a 1 minute headline so Smash being mentioned doesn't necessarily mean it's going to be lengthy. That said, given how reliant Nintendo has been on Smash for the past 2 and a half years (since E3 2018) it would not be surprising in the slightest if like 10+ minutes is spent on Smash.

Regarding 3rd party games, I thought Jon Cartwrights comment in the nintendolife video about a GTA legacy collection was an interesting idea plus i'm hoping for No Man's Sky!

@Balta666 Not going to lie, as keen as I am for Breath of the Wild 2, we already know that's on the way so I'd be way more excited for the 'one more thing' to be something completely unexpected.

I don’t know if I’ll have time to make a full bingo card but my main picks for tonight are:

-Mario Golf
Surely Camelot have been making this? It could be heavily based on the Wii U version.

-2 Smash fighters
The first will be relatively boring and predictable and available soon. The second will be shocking and surprising and basically a teaser for later in the year.

-Apex and Crash 4 will eat up the minutes
They’re boring but Nintendo wants to make sure these games are successful. They’ll want eyes on them.

-Zelda Game & Watch
A follow up to the Mario one is inevitable. Unless there’s a Zelda direct next week this is the time to announce it.

-NSO Gameboy
This actually makes a lot of sense. Those games are well suited to portable play and I think Nintendo could probably get any Gameboy game they’d like (including things like Megaman and Castlevania). N64 will never happen for various reasons.

-Kirby
It’s been about 6 months - time for another new Kirby announcement.

-Fire Emblem
This one will surprise people but it shouldn’t - they come pretty frequently these days and 3 houses is 2 years old. If it’s a remake it could launch June-ish.

-BoTW 2 trailer
It’ll be short and show no gameplay but it’ll be the thing that everyone is talking about for months and months. They almost need to do this to keep the fans onside.

...

If I were to pick a complete wildcard I might go with Mario vs Rabbids 2 but then I don’t think Ubisoft run a tight enough ship (we’d have heard about it in leaks months ago).

My predictions for this Direct are pretty vague but I feel like there'll be some cool surprises.

The Legend of Zelda 35th Anniversary: some kind of celebration, and ideally a collection of games, such as Ocarina of Time, Wind Waker, and Twilight Princess, for example. Realistically those three make the most sense because their equivalents for the Mario series are 64, Sunshine and Galaxy. Both series had two entries on Wii and the other was completely ignored. (I doubt they'll leave Skyward Sword and frankly I hope Nintendo release it as an HD remaster) I'd want Nintendo to give us the remaster editions for all three, because of their graphical quality and all the QOL features introduced, such as the Swift Sail in WW, the Poe Lantern in TP, and the Guidance Stone, more item buttons, Shard of Agony, and the Water Temple level indicators for OoT. But I doubt that'll happen considering how Super Mario 64 turned out; it was completely unchanged.

Some kind of info for the Breath of the Wild sequel. Something along the lines of an E3 2016 reveal, with a bit of info. Eiji Anouma said in September that the dev team needed more time, and not much time has passed since then. If they don't reveal or tease this game then it won't come off completely unsurprising to me. But I hope they give us something, like a small story snippet, some gameplay mechanics, or even a name. This'll either be at the beginning or the end of the Direct, I think, because it's unrealistic to think the Breath of the Wild sequel will be releasing within the next four months.

Something pertaining to No More Heroes III, since that game was revealed for 2021 during the October Partners' Showcase. It's been up in the air for a while and that series intrigues me a little.

I feel like a Metroid Prime Trilogy can serve as a precursor to Prime 4. If it doesn't exist, ah well. If it does, it'll be a good opportunity for new players, like me, to get into the franchise before 4 comes out. If not a Metroid collection, maybe something else. A collection other than Zelda feels appropriate for now considering free time and its abundance. I mean, Sony released Uncharted: The Nathan Drake Collection, which was three AAA games in one, for free back in May, something Nintendo would, in my eyes, never do. If they're not gonna give a free game away they might as well make a value collection. (But since when have they ever made a collection that's actually good on your wallet?)

Hideki Kamiya's been silencing us about Bayonetta 3 more times than Mario's rescued Peach. Bottom line is that I doubt we'll get something about that. If we do however, either he's messing with fans whenever he takes to Twitter, or he was just like; "SHUT UP SHUT UP JUST ONE MORE DAY,"

Something new, and unannounced to round out the show. If I had to guess it'd be a Xenoblade Chronicles X HD remaster. The last one ended with Xenoblade: Definitive Edition being announced, and Tetsuya Takahashi's mentioned before that he was interested in porting X. That, combined with a Skyward Sword port, and a Zelda collection, will for me, officially make the Wii U obsolete.

@StuTwo The only thing with Fire Emblem is that it also had DLC which came out last year so they didn't finish/complete it 2 years ago and HD games take longer to make than 3DS games so I wouldn't use the frequency of releases wouldn't be the same.

If there's a new Fire Emblem I hope they spend time polishing it as I felt FE3H was really rough in places.

@StuTwo There wasn't a Wii U version, 3DS (World Tour) has been the only Mario Golf since GC/GBA.

@StuTwo While you're right, Three Houses is quite old by now, that game was actually quite larger in scope and content than any other previous Fire Emblem and also had a lengthy story DLC developed for it after. I also want to remind you that they outsourced a lot of the development to Koei Tecmo (which is why the environments look like Dynasty Warriors and the characters look like they're from a different artstyle).

I'd love to see a new Fire Emblem but I'm not expecting one yet, I really want the next Fire Emblem to "wow" people even more than Three Houses did — even though Three Houses is by far the most popular Fire Emblem game, I feel like they could attract the mass crowds in by just adding a little more 'oomph' to their games. Maybe I'm wrong, however, and we will just be stuck in yet another Pokemon situation, although I have higher hopes for Intelligent Systems.

I must have imagined that one then!

If I’m dreaming of games that never existed I should really have used more imagination!

@TheJGG Nice predictions.

Although I disagree about Bayonetta 3. I feel that they have something to reveal, just that as Nintendo are publishing he is unable to say anything. He could well be saying all this knowing that we'll be seeing something in the next Direct...

All conjecture though!

@StuTwo I am so ready for a new Fire Emblem! Although I really do wonder how they could follow up something as ambitious as Three Houses so quickly.

@timleon SILLY INSECT. YOU MENTION ME IN ENGLISH YOU GET BANNED STUPID INSECT.

Really fed up with insects which never read my posts/header pic and just keep posting . THAT’S WHY I’m telling u not to post me in languages other than Japanese. If u break rules, that means u r brainless insect and will be blocked immediately. BE CAREFUL.

It'll be interesting to see what the balance between native 3rd party ports and cloud versions are this time. Back when the last general Direct happened, cloud versions weren't a thing outside of Japan.

@Grumblevolcano Have we seen any sales data on these? It would be interesting to know if they're even successful, and the cost/benefit of releasing something via cloud vs. porting it.

I'm a bit more cynical. I think that it's a really quick and easy win for IS to use the same engine again - just overlay a new story, characters and maps/scenarios. Let's be honest - a Fire Emblem game will always live and die based on those things alone.

I do think that Three Houses could have been presented in a much more premium way (better texturing on the models, more realistic and dynamic movement in the cut scenes, actually rendered backdrops for the cut scenes instead of just a painted room hanging behind the characters etc.) but it didn't really need any of those things.

So a new installment or (more likely) a major remake of an older game using the same engine is definitely something I could imagine being revealed. It won't be a game that breaks new ground for the series but it would be enthusiastically received by fans.

Three Houses is one of my favorite games of all time, and it may be my favorite strategy RPG of all time even ahead of FF Tactics. I didn't mind the graphics or overall presentation: I thought it was really nice (and the characters didn't have the stumpy legs like on 3DS lol). The school backdrop and systems were really cool and drew me into the game way more than just traveling on a map from point to point. If they would introduce a new FE with pretty much the same visuals but a new "gimmick" in place of the school, they'd sell millions all over again.

@Dezzy
My heart wasn't really in the discussion, but I do think it's weird to consider Mario Maker 2 a Mario game. I know that statement on its head also sounds weird. Oh well, sorry it didn't fascinate you like Dark Souls lol

My heart really wants to hear Zelda news tonight, but I just don't think we're going to. I think it's gonna be a solid 10 minutes or so of Smash, maybe another 10-20 minutes of 3rd party stuff like Crash and Apex and Fall Guys and VALHEIM (maybe haha), 5 minutes of Bravely Default II, Silksong in there somewhere... it's kind of cynical, but I think we're only gonna be left with like 15ish minutes of surprise stuff or first-party stuff we don't know about. That just doesn't seem enough time for me to lay out the whole Zelda anniversary stuff.

Just my guess.

I can see this going one of two ways:

a) Opens with Zelda montage and goes on to have quite a few Zelda related announcements, before moving on to some general stuff and ending on Smash DLC.

b) More likely: Opens with Smash. Cuts to Anouma or someone saying "Of course, we are celebrating a big anniversary this year..." and fades to... Metroid Prime Trilogy Anniversary Edition, releasing June 2021. Then some general stuff before climaxing on some Zelda anniversary stuff, with a 'one more thing...' being BotW2 November release date.

Whether they do cover BotW2 or not depends, I think, on when/if they're planning the next Direct.

You guys had me at blood and semen.

What better way to celebrate than firing something out of the pipe?

Nothing is true. Everything is permitted.
