@jump Of course it's a 2D Mario game. It plays like one and includes a 1-player campaign, it just happens to have a level editor attached. The first Super Mario Bros. still would've been a 2D Mario game had it come with a level editor. Nintendo includes it in their history page, which doesn't have any spinoffs in it.
And considering that the Switch installment for nearly every other franchise is the best-selling, 6.91 million units looks even more anemic in comparison.
@Euler
I'm a huge Mario Maker fan, but I'm with @jump on this one: I wouldn't consider it a 2D Mario game. It's... a creation tool more than anything. The attached campaign is really just a demonstration of building techniques, though they did add the nice touch of rebuilding the castle to tie everything together.
Anyway, I don't think it's fair to compare Mario Maker sales to actual Mario game sales is all that I'm saying.
Regardless of what's shown I'm just SO pleased this format still exists!
50 minutes though when most trailers are really short and it's only the first half the year?! It's the longest direct EVER. Ooh, it boggles the mind...
@jump "Super" and "Mario" appear before Maker in the title, if we're going down that road. Nintendo themselves consider it a mainline Mario game, because it is.
My predictions (maybe a bit optimistic, but it's 50 mins and I'm going with the idea that things have been held back from 2020):
Smash is tackled early on. New fighter is revealed to be Crash Bandicoot.
New Kirby game revealed.
GB(C) games for Switch online.
Return of a small forgotten IP (think Rhythm Heaven, Nintendogs, Dillon, Mario vs. Donkey Kong...).
First gameplay reveal of Bayonetta 3 or No More Heroes 3.
Some mention of Mario 3D All-Stars availability (either backpedaling on the limited availability, or making them available digital-only as single games).
Ports for Zelda anniversary (my guess is a collection with OoT [N64 original upscaled to HD], Wind Waker HD and Twilight Princess HD).
And one more thing...being a new trailer for BotW2 (Holiday 2021 release). This will be mostly cinematic with a tiny glimpse of gameplay, and a hint of when we'll find out more.
I have no clue what Nintendo will talk about (especially since we already know the Switch's lineup through April) but I think we'll definitely get some Zelda 35th Anniversary news, and the Direct will end with a BOTW2 trailer, title reveal and 2021 release date. Pokemon stuff will be saved for next week.

Ok so people say if eggman gets into smash he would work alot like bowser jr. But I just came up with a way to get around that. so like pokemon trainer were you could switch bewtweem pokemon, what if you could switch between Diffrent inventions, three diffrent ones and they could be. the egg mobile, death egg robot, and metal sonic. how they would work I kinda need to work that out, but it would be so cool if they would do this.
Nintendo are like woman, You love them for whats on the inside, not the outside…you know what I mean! Luzlane best girl!

One thing we should remember if the Direct will have different games announcement depend on which version you watched.
Probably the Japanese version Nintendo Direct might have some Japanese exclusive Switch games.
Are you guys seriously arguing about whether Mario Maker counts as a 2D Mario game or not?
Well that's even dumber than the argument about whether Dark Souls counts as a JRPG. At least that debate had an interesting disagreement at its heart!
Zelda is 100% happening tomorrow. BotW2 is 100% NOT happening tomorrow. Do you REALLY think BoTW would come out in the first half of 2021? No, it will be a holiday game and will be shown in a Zelda-specific direct later in the year.
Heigh Ho Heigh Ho. It’s off to work (from home) I go.
@BabyYoda71 I think if it's releasing in 2021 at all then we'll probably find out in this Direct. The Direct is focused on games releasing in the first half of 2021 but that doesn't mean that every game talked about in the whole 50 minute Direct will be.
Probably depends on how strictly they adhere to the “first half of 2021 only” rule. If they announce a big holiday title and don’t talk about Zelda at all, then it’s not coming this year. If it only goes up to June, then it could (probably will) show up at E3.
@BabyYoda71 I'm not convinced it's necessarily coming this year so I'm not sure that it'll show up but I wouldn't be surprised to see it. I think at the very least we'll get a tease at the end for one big release for later this year, whether that be BotW2 or something else.
@BenAV THere will without a doubt be a big announcement at the end. They’ve held us out so long for a direct that it has to be a big one here. It’s 50-minutes long so there’s has to be a few excitements.
Heigh Ho Heigh Ho. It’s off to work (from home) I go.
