@MarioBrickLayer what do you mean by standalone carts?

I respectfully disagree. In fact this was a pretty darn good year. Not as good as last year, but definitely better than 2018 all things considered.

Personally, I prefer the line-up of 2018 over 2020. I didn't buy any of the "major titles" of 2020, but I bought 4 of the major titles of 2018. Let's see how Hyrule Warriors: Age of Calamity turns out.

Presumably, extra karts to go with the game, so several people can play .... @jump

When you buy it, you get:-
The game to download
Kart x 1
Gates x 4
Arrow markers x 2
USB charging cable

So you can use all that to play single player, if Nintendo sold karts (without the game, gates, arrow markers etc) you could buy a second kart and play multiplayer on your TV. They could even introduce other characters if the game is popular.

That's interesting, I didn't buy any of the 2018 titles (although i'm looking at party and aces for a family multiplayer purchase), of the major titles, I bought:-
2017 - 4
2018 - 0
2019 - 3 (will pick up LM3 too at some point too)
2020 - 2 (pre-orders)

The game is a free download on the Eshop and not including a usb cable would outrage people and not really save much money.

Are the 2 pre-orders the Mario 3D collection and the new Hyrule Warriors game? I'm considering both, but I'm still unsure.

True but if it's cost them £10m - £20m to develop the game, that has to be covered within the £100 cost of the game, Nintendo will be projecting units sold to workout when that cost is covered etc. A stand alone kart just has to cover the costs of that kart.

@dionysos283 Mario 3D Collection + Pikmin! Really not sure about Hyrule Warriors, I haven't played the first one and I have too many other games I really want to play or finish to consider buying it.

MarioBrickLayer

jump

@MarioBrickLayer that’s not how costing works and that has nothing to do with them already selling individual carts and you wanting them to sell individual carts. You are just complaining about the price of the carts then.

Maybe they'll add separate karts later .... ? Not much point now, when you would need the game to start with, though!

@jump I don't think i'm complaining (well maybe just a little!) but the point i'm trying to make is that the only way to play multiplayer with the pre-orders available is to buy the game twice. If the Direct costs of producing just the Kart are say £20, then they could have made a multiplayer version of the game available for say £125 or they could have a range of standalone karts (Mario, Luigi, Peach, Toad, Bowser etc) available for say £39.99?

MarioBrickLayer

jump

@MarioBrickLayer they have a range of carts, Mario and Luigi, already which are sold separately. The game is already multiplayer and the game is free for everyone on the Switch Eshop, you don’t buy the game twice you buy two carts for multiplayer or one cart to race against AI Kooplings.

Think of it needing as needing an extra controller to play multiplayer or complaining about the cost of Jump Rope Challenge as you have to buy a Switch for it.

@Slowdive 2017 along with 2019, have been the best year for Switch, is very difficult for Nintendo to all years of Switch since launch have a consitence in quality, we can't expect every year of Switch so far to be a 2017, if Legend of Zelda Breath of the Wild 2, Super Mario Odyssey 2 and Bayonetta 3 release in 2021, 2021 is gonna be a amazing year for Switch.

i like HD Rumble.

@jump If you look at the two sets available, they are both full copies of the game, so if I had two switches I could play single player on each of them at the same time, so I don't think it's the same as needing an extra controller. Plus the game isn't really free, as you have to buy the stuff to play it and Nintendo will have factored in the cost of the game in the price of buying the set.

MarioBrickLayer

@MarioBrickLayer You have over thought this in a bizarre way. You can play a single player game with one controller but can't you can't play a multiplayer game with one controller, you can play two single player games with two controllers.

There's plenty of costing methods that don't include developments costs as a per unit basis but that really makes no difference as to if they are selling carts separately as they already are.

Is that likely though?

I think Bayonetta 3 is a game to expect in 2021- I'd be surprised if it doesn't come next year - and there must be a very decent chance of BoTW2.

I honestly can't see Mario Odyssey 2 in 2021 just because of the number of Mario games we're getting over the next 6 months. Hopefully Bowsers Fury is substantial content and gives us a New Super Luigi U style expansion to 3D World.

I can't see Metroid Prime 4 either. All of the signs suggest that there's still a long way to go with that one.

I kind of expect something Splatoon next year. A spin off of some description. I also expect a Kirby game and a Mario Golf game (but I have been expecting a Mario Golf game on Switch from about January 2018 onwards...). I also expect a Fire Emblem game next year - IS knocks them out at a fair click - and a Pokemon game (I'd put my bet on Let's Go Merril and Togapei but a more conventional remake of Diamond and Pearl is probably what the fanbase actually wants).

My real hope for 2021 is that Nintendo gives us something completely new IP wise (or completely reinvents something old like they allowed Sakurai to do with Kid Icarus). The time is right for something outside the norm.

I think 2021 will be something like:

  • 3D World
  • Bravely Default II
  • No More Heroes III
  • SMTV
  • Bayonetta 3
  • BotW 2 launching alongside new hardware
  • Zelda ports/remasters to celebrate 35th anniversary
  • Zelda Battle Royale to celebrate 35th anniversary
  • Pokemon Gen 2 or Gen 4 remakes (Let's Go for Gen 2 or either type for Gen 4)
  • Some blue ocean games like Switch Sports, Nintendogs, Switch Music, etc.
  • More Wii remasters and Wii U ports
  • WarioWare
  • Fire Emblem remake (either FE4 or FE6)
  • Super Mario Party 2 or Switch Party
