@link3710 I think it could be both. Limited Q2 (possibly also Q3) is almost certainly the main reason for no Direct yet but as an extra possibility, if Nintendo thinks E3 is dying soon they may get rid of the E3 Direct so when E3 does die there's no expectations for Nintendo to do anything in June.
Nintendo has already released an official statement and apology regarding the impact of the virus on production of Switch consoles, Joy-Cons, and other peripherals (such as those bundled with Ring Fit Adventure).
From personal experience, I can say that Ring Fit has been almost impossible to purchase at RRP in Japan for well over a month at this point, and sales have crashed as a result despite demand appearing to still be high.
Again, no-one is in a position to say whether this has had the effect of delaying a Direct, or thrown this year’s planned schedule out of whack, as no-one knows what the plans were in the first place. However, as the above link states, Nintendo has in some way already been affected by this virus, even before the disease started to gain much traction in Japan (the above statement was released on the 6th of February).
Beyond what has been officially stated, I don’t want to over-speculate on the potential impacts this disease might have. There’s no point cooking up theories without event basic details to work with. However, given that effects to business have already been directly and officially attributed to the virus, it’s certainly worth bearing in mind as a factor that may effect the company’s output for the immediate future.
It's entirely possible that problems with manufacturing could have caused issues in the release schedule. It's very likely that Nintendo would not want to announce games and release date for said games if they are unsure if the factories that produce the game cards will be able to meet the demand due to the virus.
While I would not blame Nintendo for delays like this, since to me, obviously, it's not something they can control, I suppose it's entirely possible that other people might.
@Maxz Ring Fit has been totally unavailable in the states for at least that long as well, I've been keeping an eye out for it since sometime in January and still haven't seen a store that has stock. Of course, I also happen to know that the same person bought out the entire stock of every store in my area thanks to chatting with the salespeople, so scalpers are definitely a part of that.
@Octane in the Netherlands it works kinda similar with flu shots (griepprik); it's for people over 60 and with certain conditions. I just read that around 6 million residents (of about 17 in total) get an invitation to get one.
Btw, that only works for influenza. Personally I only get the man flu a couple of times a year
Ok so if it's this week, it'll probably get announced in the next few hours? I've got my fingers crossed but I'm awfully pessimistic at this point, and suspect they're delaying it until after Animal Crossing launch.
I saw another random eshop ad on youtube today. My cynical mind interpreted that as "we know you're annoyed about the lack of new info. Here's a reminder of all the old stuff that's available to keep your happy until the Direct."
The decision to drop the Luigi's Mansion DLC in a Twitter announcement is a curious one. That seems like the type of thing that they would normally announce in a Direct and then drop it right after the Direct ends. Hm...
This is all super weird. I get that people have backlogs and stuff, but you have to think that investors want to know what's coming, and the fiscal year ends on 3/31.
It's 2pm UK time and no Direct announcement. It is looking like another no Direct week, after Friday the only upcoming Nintendo published game with a release date is Animal Crossing.
@Grumblevolcano At this point it looks like the next direct is going to be in early April. That is, if they don't do another one of those "showcase" directs for Xenoblade or something.
@WaffleKnight Nintendo's never had a situation where there's no upcoming Nintendo published games with a release date. So Nintendo has to say something before March 20th even if it's a just a short Xenoblade trailer posted on social media with a release date.
@Grumblevolcano Yeah. If Nintendo either doesn't have prepared or has delayed a general direct, a Xenoblade trailer or something with a concrete release window would most likely plug that hole (although I still have my fingers crossed for next week on MAR10)
I really wonder what surprise games they have planned for the rest of the year. That's my favorite thing about Nintendo, their announcements tend to be genuine surprises, and close to release. Hopefully everyone involved in the company (and in general) is staying safe and healthy
This shouldn't be as big of an issue with video games, though. Any potential issues with games are due to production. Movies are at-risk because they require people to be in a closed-in area with a ton of other people. People are still going to be able to buy digital copies, pick up a game at a store, or get it mailed to them if they want it.
