@Grumblevolcano Ah I suppose that changes things a bit. I could see this being more a general announcement, that the next-gen releases are coming out soon, then a Switch version will also be released at a later date.
We probably won't have to wait long to find out, though.

Turns out Sony didn't announce a Playstation Showcase this week for airing next week to bring some good news in to the mix. Instead they just did an increased focus on promoting TLoU Part 1 which released today.
@NintendoByNature Perhaps, Game Informer has an exclusive gameplay video for God of War Ragnarok on September 6th which would be an odd approach of doing things if there was a Playstation Showcase on September 8th as that game would certainly be featured if there was one.
I felt the other presentation by PAX Games, Wholesome Direct, etc are already enough for me to get a lot of information about upcoming games. Thanks to play-asia also for providing the upcoming games outside the Direct.
I remembered something which increases the chance of a general Direct, we still don't know the release date of the XC3 special edition but we do know preorders open in September. So I could see a Xenoblade segment where the special edition release date is given, wave 2 of the DLC is revealed and possibly the release date for the Pyra and Mythra amiibo given as well.
While Sephiroth was the next Smash fighter after Steve, I could see Square Enix perhaps wanting the amiibo released closer to when the FF7 Rebirth promo cycle begins. Hence why I think Pyra and Mythra may come first.
It's too early to do that half way through the Switch lifecycle as it hasn't even had a price cut yet. Folk are still buying a premium product. It needs to have a price reduction before even thinking about a new console and Metroid Prime 4 is still over a year away.
Counter-point, we were "half way into the Switch lifecycle" 2 years ago. The official word from Nintendo is going to be that there's no new hardware all the way up until there is. They don't want to give people a reason to wait for something else. And in terms of price cuts? I mean inflation is a hell of a thing currently globally for one. Excuse Australian prices but the Switch launched with one SKU at $470AU, that works out to be ~$530AU when you account for inflation. There are now three SKUs; OLED at $540, OG* at $450AU and Lite at $329AU. The Lite is the discount if you ignore inflation, with inflation the OLED is basically the same price as the original SKU
I do agree that these announced games still need to be compatible on the current Switch. It would be a bad move to burn people who have been waiting for a title like that and Nintendo has done ports between generations in similar circumstances. However I think this time there is potentially less energy required to make these games compatible on new hardware. I still think it's very highly probable that there is not just backwards compatibility with Switch on the new hardware but there'll be a significant number of titles that just run better on the new hardware out of the box
To the extent that I still think it's possible that to the average consumer the new hardware will be seen as "Switch 4K". In the sense that the Mum & Dad buyer getting this thing for little Jimmy will see it as "oh, this one is the same thing but with more pixels"... and not be too far off the mark

I was just looking at Paris-dakar rally game for gamecube on youtube. Follow the rally for alot of years, I'd really like to see this in a direct sometime for switch. Maybe they'll make a new oneππ€π·
@FragRed It could go either way, Splatoon 3 will likely have presence in all general Directs for the next 2 years and the pre-launch Splatfest had all but 2 of the maps not in Splatoon 2 (1 new, 1 from Splatoon 1) so we'll probably learn about the first batch of post-launch maps in the next Direct.
The other reveals (dependent on release dates) could distract from Splatoon 3 but on the other hand the Splatoon 3 news could interest more players.
So the biggest factor I think would be other events like is there a Playstation Showcase? Are Microsoft doing an event where Deathloop is free from PS exclusivity?
