@NintendoByNature @Grumblevolcano Would Nintendo really want to do a Direct the week of Splatoon?

It's too early to do that half way through the Switch lifecycle as it hasn't even had a price cut yet. Folk are still buying a premium product. It needs to have a price reduction before even thinking about a new console and Metroid Prime 4 is still over a year away.

Counter-point, we were "half way into the Switch lifecycle" 2 years ago. The official word from Nintendo is going to be that there's no new hardware all the way up until there is. They don't want to give people a reason to wait for something else. And in terms of price cuts? I mean inflation is a hell of a thing currently globally for one. Excuse Australian prices but the Switch launched with one SKU at $470AU, that works out to be ~$530AU when you account for inflation. There are now three SKUs; OLED at $540, OG* at $450AU and Lite at $329AU. The Lite is the discount if you ignore inflation, with inflation the OLED is basically the same price as the original SKU

I do agree that these announced games still need to be compatible on the current Switch. It would be a bad move to burn people who have been waiting for a title like that and Nintendo has done ports between generations in similar circumstances. However I think this time there is potentially less energy required to make these games compatible on new hardware. I still think it's very highly probable that there is not just backwards compatibility with Switch on the new hardware but there'll be a significant number of titles that just run better on the new hardware out of the box

To the extent that I still think it's possible that to the average consumer the new hardware will be seen as "Switch 4K". In the sense that the Mum & Dad buyer getting this thing for little Jimmy will see it as "oh, this one is the same thing but with more pixels"... and not be too far off the mark

I was just looking at Paris-dakar rally game for gamecube on youtube. Follow the rally for alot of years, I'd really like to see this in a direct sometime for switch. Maybe they'll make a new one👍🤞😷

@FragRed It could go either way, Splatoon 3 will likely have presence in all general Directs for the next 2 years and the pre-launch Splatfest had all but 2 of the maps not in Splatoon 2 (1 new, 1 from Splatoon 1) so we'll probably learn about the first batch of post-launch maps in the next Direct.

The other reveals (dependent on release dates) could distract from Splatoon 3 but on the other hand the Splatoon 3 news could interest more players.

So the biggest factor I think would be other events like is there a Playstation Showcase? Are Microsoft doing an event where Deathloop is free from PS exclusivity?

@skywake Nintendo have made it clear they want folk to be able to take their games with them. Most of their more recent consoles let you do that in some capacity but I think they have actually planned long term for it this time around (they showed an infographic at one of the meeting with NSO spanning accross this 'gen' and next.). So I don't have any anxiety over that.

I wonder, will we see the Mario movie in the next Direct.

@Grumblevolcano I have a feeling we’ll see an early look trailer this month, then in February we would see a longer trailer.

The funny thing is that I keep on forgetting about the movie entirely even though it’s only coming out in a few months now. Once we get a trailer I’m sure it’ll be stuck in my mind more.

@Anti-Matter that looks really good (to me), too bad it's not on Switch.

At some point, when the games cannot get ported to Switch, just pick the PS4 / PS5 version. Most of 3rd party multi console games are better played on PlayStation version.

@Anti-Matter looks like I need to get a PS5 (sometime in the future, I don't have the funds to get one and Pokemon is coming out soon).

I'd rather direct time be reserved for games, and mario movie info dropped on Twitter. But, who knows 🤷‍♂️

@NintendoByNature Me too. I can't emphasise how mad I'll be if they show mario footage (thus implying it's the leaked 2d mario) and then reveal it to be the movie.

Hope you're having a good day.

I've been mulling over the possibility/inevitability of a September Direct for the past while now and, in addition to the wishlist I made under the rumour article a while back, there's one thing that I think I want to see above anything: GB/GBA on NSO.

Ever since those emulators leaked a few months back, I have been feverishly thinking about the idea of adding these systems to the current crop of NSO offerings and the more I think about it, the more excited I become. The Game Boy systems completely passed me by when I was younger (with one of them releasing before I was even born at that) so a new way to play these classics for the first time would be massively appreciated. Another reason why would be the potential for Pokemon this time round. Imagine being able to play Gen 1-3 all in one place with possible HOME connectivity? I'm not sure how it could even work but goddamnit I want it to.

In short: give me Game Boy or give me death.

@Fizza On the 3DS there was a Poke Transfer app to transfer Pokemon from Gens 1-2 and a few DS games to BANK, but I think if we get them on a NSO app it would all be baked into HOME and the Pokemon would have special badges showing they came from a older game.

Just an idea, I too have thought a lot about this.

@Kermit1 Would also be the first time ever that Gen 3 has been available through a Virtual Console-esque system (closest thing we've ever had was ORAS back in 2014) which would be great. LET ME PLAY EMERALD DAMNIT.

@Kermit1 @Fizza If they were to add Gens 1-3 to NSO it would cool if the Pokemon Stadium games also came and functioned like the original N64 games. There's also a few other N64 games that connected to GB games like Mario Golf.
