May 10th is when Nintendo fiscal year earnings are reported so I think the replacement E3 Direct will be around then. Mobile is failing Nintendo as shown by gradual shutdown of their mobile games (Dr. Mario World in 2021, Dragalia Lost in 2022, Mario Kart Tour will probably be shut down shortly after the MK8 Deluxe Booster Course Pass is finished, etc.) so it may be that what Nintendo will want to show investors is that the upcoming Switch lineup is insanely strong even with the absence of BotW 2.

@Grumblevolcano
Nintendo has likely been planning a June E3 Direct for quite some time now, so they'll most likely still present the Direct in June even if E3 itself is canceled. I doubt they'll rush to get the Direct out a month earlier than usual, not do I think they'll delay it past June as they have no concrete release dates after Live A Live.

Are we going to see our first look at BotW2 (yes, it's been delayed, but they might still start marketing it in a few months)?

I'm going to go with "no". I can see them starting to hype the game in December but they won't want to draw attention (and possible sales) away from their 2022 line up. I think the 2-3 seconds we just got is all that we're getting until the very end of the year at the earliest.

What could be a possibility is a "Zelda 3D All Stars" announced to be released in time for Christmas (possibly time limited like the Mario collection). That or Wind Waker HD. There's a gap now for Nintendo to release something Zelda this year now but it's obviously dependent on whether or not they've got it already ported on Switch and ready to go.

Honestly, I think Super Mario Run will be the next one to go. Nintendo has done nothing with it, and I'm sure it hasn't performed nearly as well as they had hoped. I think the only one of these mobile games that is safe is Fire Emblem Heroes. If you told me a few years ago a mobile Fire Emblem would be Nintendo's highest earning mobile game, I would have laughed at you.

At this rate, Nintendo should just can this whole mobile... initiative, is what I'll call it. When they started it, there was a reason to do it. The Wii U was failing, and the 3DS was losing steam. I always saw mobile games as a safety net for Nintendo to fall back on. But now that the Switch is as successful as it is, there's no real point for Nintendo to keep making them. And the mere existence of the Booster Course Pass is all the more damning.

@westman98 E3 being fully cancelled has been heavily rumoured since mid January so I could see Nintendo having prepared for that outcome.

@CITRONtanker I think Pocket Camp could be safe though that's more a case of what the Animal Crossing team does after Splatoon 3. There may be a situation where Pocket Camp shuts down and its contents appear in New Horizons.

@CITRONtanker It's a shame because Mario Run is a game that I genuinely really enjoyed. I think it's innovative in a lot of ways that the mainline 2D Mario games should take on and the level design was really good.

The main "campaign" was much too short of course. Nintendo should have learnt decades ago with games like Yoshi's Story that many reviewers (and casual players) won't forgive a superficially short and easy game - even if it's clearly designed to be a "high score" game played over and over again.

In reality what Nintendo should have probably done with mobile is what Apple have since done with Apple arcade - create a premium subscription service (it could have even been bundled in to what ultimately became NSO...). Speaking of which - I could also potentially see Super Mario Run one day leaving mobile altogether and becoming a free perk for Switch owners on NSO in some form or another.

As much as I don't like the direction most mobile games (and thus Nintendo's successful mobile games) take, I don't see Nintendo fully abandoning it either. They made those games partially to market their own series, and thus they would want to continue doing this marketing after the Switch's wild success I would assume. They also make a lot of money. It'd be weird if they stopped.

@Grumblevolcano Yeah, Pocket Camp had some weird methods of monetization, from what I've heard. But yeah, I wouldn't be surprised to see some kind of Booster Course Pass situation with New Horizons. Although, it would have to be paid, seeing as they did say they were done with free updates.

@StuTwo I'll give Mario Run this, it did feel intuitive to play. But not only was it short, but it felt so similar to the New Super Mario Bros series, and it was released at a time where the general public was becoming fatigued of 2D Mario. Granted, that topic is a much more broad one, but I think Mario Run could have served as an opportunity for Nintendo to try and give 2D Mario that identity overall it desperately needs.

But, as you said, it was a short game, and that Toad mode that I forget the name of didn't keep me coming back, and nor did Remix 10. I played through the games levels once, and never again. The Star Coins never gave me a reason to come back for it. Oh well. I guess the ideal Mario Run will forever be a dream, because we'll certainly never get it.

First up, Nintendo entered the whole mobile initiative to please shareholders at a time when their console hardware and sales aside from handheld, was causing quarterly and full year losses. Nintendo also had no idea how crazy successful the Switch was going to end up being so the idea of promoting the franchises was obviously an important move. However, I don’t think Nintendo really sees themselves needing to do that anymore so exiting the market one game at a time may well be the plan.

As for the next Direct, now E3 is officially cancelled I assume Nintendo can rest easy knowing they don’t have to hit that mid June deadline to get something together. Could easily wait until July if extra time is needed to get something impactful together. There’s really no rush.

@Grumblevolcano
The January rumors suggested that the physical E3 even would be cancelled (which surprised no one) but said nothing about a digital E3 being cancelled or not.

Either way, I'd be shocked if the next general Direct wasn't held in June

I want Splatoon 3 release date. They will probably just tweet it out shortly before May 10th (earnings report.)

Isn't Super Mario Run a more contained single purchase kind of game (with the "free" version being a demo of sorts), rather than a live service (which all their other mobile games are)?

If that's the case I don't see it ever getting delisted (or at least it'll probably last about the longest). The other games get delisted as the online live service component is too integrated into the experience in order to work once they shut down the servers, which I don't think is the case for SMR (though I only ever played the demo version back when it first released, so I don't know if anything has changed since then).

Switch - Blade Strangers
PS4 - Kingdom Hearts III, Tetris Effect (VR)

@westman98 Early January was a confirmation that the physical E3 was cancelled but then was followed up in mid January by rumours that the digital E3 was also cancelled.

Nintendo would have been doing it's usual direct for E3 if that had gone ahead, anyway.... Which will almost certainly still happen, just with a more flexible timing of release!

Any chance of an Indie World this coming week? There was one on April 14 2021 - the previous one before that was 15 December 2020 and the last one before now was 15 December 2021.

If they show botw2 gameplay and a release date for windwaker and twilight princess on switch this would be a great direct, but a fan can only hope

@Grumblevolcano I don't think much would have needed to change between an E3 Direct and a Summer Direct. Maybe a bit less on the presentation, but otherwise, most of the game announcements and trailers will probably just be announced in the Summer Direct. Beyond that, it's just a matter of them now choosing when to air the Summer Direct (anywhere from May-July seems like a safe bet).
