I'm starting to look forward to some of the games offered in the NSO service. I figured it'd be good to have a topic to specifically discuss the games offered, instead of the general functioning and characteristics.

These games are available at launch: Balloon Fight, Baseball, Donkey Kong, Double Dragon, Dr. Mario, Excitebike, Ghosts’n Goblins, Gradius, Ice Climber, Ice Hockey, The Legend of Zelda, Mario Bros., Pro Wrestling, River City Ransom, Soccer, Super Mario Bros., Super Mario Bros. 3, Tecmo Bowl, Tennis and Yoshi.

So a few things I'd like to discuss here:

  • What do you think of the current line-up?
  • Any games you're looking forward to playing?
  • What kind of 'special characteristics' do you expect?
  • Any unannounced games you're expecting or hoping for?
  • Any nostalgic memories you want to share with regard to the games?

Please let's not use this topic for discussion about whether or not you should pay 20 bucks for the service; the pinned post about the online service in general has all views on this matter more than covered.

Personally, I don't care too much about the service, but it's a nice thing to have. I enjoyed some of the games when I was a kid and I haven't played them much in the VC era on Wii and 3DS. So it's nice to go back to some of the games again. I'm mainly looking forward to the Super Mario games to see if I'm able to beat them now that I'm an adult. I hope they'll provide save states though I'm also looking forward to Zelda, since I became a fan later on so I've hardly played the old games. A few of the games haven't aged well though (e.g. Soccer). I'm also curious for some of the well known classics that I've never played (Metroid, in a while right? Yoshi) and some of the games should be fun in multiplayer (DK, Mario Bros., Balloon Fight of course). I wonder whether these games can be played with more than 2 players? These games are fun to have on the side, both single player and multiplayer. I hope they'll add Kirby's Adventure, The Goonies II, TMNT II and Ducktales (1 or 2, not sure). I realise most of these are probably unlikely due to licensing issues.

So, any thoughts?

As I mentioned before, there's at least 11 games I know I enjoy and will be playing a decent amount in those initial 20 games. And 3 or 4 that I'm interested in trying. For the announced games being added in October through December, there's one game each month that I'm definitely interested in, and one more in both November and December I'm curious to try out. As such, it seems like a solid lineup to me.

Only ones I'm really interested in are Zelda, Mario 1 and 3, Dr Mario. Doubt I would ever touch the rest personally but I'm sure my kids will to see how games were "in the good old days" lol. Of upcoming games we k ow of Metroid is the only one on my radar. I think the NES controllers are really cool but wouldn't buy them as we already have way to many controllers in my house.

Zelda II and Castlevania are all I need.

Zelda II is fantastic and really goes overlooked by many. Challenging yet fair (most of the time), and it's not as obtuse as Zelda 1 (although it can be a bit obtuse at times, so play this game with a guide).

Castlevania is also another one I just need hooked into my veins again. One of my absolute favorite series of all time.

Metroid, Xenoblade, EarthBound shill

I run a YouTube/Twitch channel for fun. Check me out if you want to!

Please let me know before you send me a FC request, thanks.

It’s a great first 20 IMO I’d pay $10 for LoZ alone

Games I would like to see on there is Super Mario Bros 2, Contra, Chip & Dale Rescue Rangers, Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles 2, and Darkwing Duck. But I would rather have the option to actually purchase the games instead of just renting them. As for the games that already coming out for the NSO going to play Super Mario Bros 3, River City Ransom, and maybe some Ice Hockey.

I'm excited for the influx of games, and glad it slams down 20 the first month instead of just 3. I'm gonna sink time in Dr. Mario for sure, and dabble in and out of SMB 3 now that I can just drop a save state and pick it up later. I'd really like Tetris 2, but it probably won't happen.

Most of the sports games don't really interest me at all. If they bring out the Volley Ball one (super spike I think it was called) that'd be different. I played the hell out of that game. Tecmo Bowl is another one I'll likely play the hell out of, assuming it's a faithful version of the old NES game. I loved the Create a Team system and playing as the coach and dictating plays, rather then controlling the players directly. Setting up your own custom play book then trying to out fox your opponent was fun. Being able to do so online will be interesting.

I use to play River City Ransom a lot. Never was very good at it, but I played it a lot. Gradius, the various Mario games, Legend of Zelda, Donkey Kong, and Ghosts n Goblins have me excited too. Other then Zelda I was never any good at any of those games, but I enjoyed them a lot.

Maybe some translated versions of games only released in Japan?

Hoping to see Earthbound in the collection. Have yet to play that and would like to on the Switch.

I think it'd be neat to see the rest of the Mother series as well. Maybe some of the oddball Japan released only NES and SNES games too. I've played a rom of a Sailor Moon rpg in the past, which was better then I thought it'd be. So I'd love to be able to play that on an official format.

It's missing my ultimate guilty pleasure NES game: American Gladiators 😅
Some might hate it and the Wall is very frustrating, but the other 4 events are so much fun!
Have to make due with my hacked xbox and NES mini versions...

A thought occurs to me. If we do eventually start getting SNES games too, do you think they would include Sim City 2000? That game's SNES port was developed and published by Nintendo after all.

Considering they aren't having to change the name of Gradius, Ghosts N Goblins, or any other NES game published by a 3rd party I don't think they would be forced to call Sim City 2000 something different either.

They could just agree with EA (or other 3rd parties for that matter) on re-releasing the game right? However unlikely that seems with EA specifically.

Do we know how long those games will be available for? I never played The Legend of Zelda so i wanted to play it but i don’t know if there is some kind of time limit or game rotation? Or are those game gonna be available all the time and just more new games added?

I am probably most interested in some old games from the most popular franchises like zelda, mario or kirby. As for non-nintendo games, i would love to see final fantasy 1-6. Sixth being most wanted, i hear a lot of good things about it but somehow i never played it.

@Kaile I don't think that question is 100% answered, but the way it's presented so far suggests that the games will remain available for as long as the NSO service is.

They'll be available until you stop your subscription, with more games being added over time. Not games replacing games, games being added.

I think this is a decent starting line-up and I'm looking forward to playing them. Considering there'll be 53 games by next August if they keep releasing 3 every month, £18 a year is a bargain really. I wonder how in-depth the added online features will be. I think Balloon Fight would be really fun in competitive multiplayer but as far as I know it was only co-op in the original release. If they add an online competitive mode that would be amazing, but it might be a bit too much to ask.
