Topic: Joy Con issues, Mario Odyssey

Hey all

Has anyone else been having problems with the joy con in “Split mode” while playing Mario Odyssey? (Y’know, the method Nintendo recommend!)

My Joy Con have all been fine playing Arms and Overcooked (the two games I use them for, as I have Pro Controllers for general use)

Basically, I am having
(a) occasional disconnects on right Joy Con
(b) The control stick on right Joy Con is being unresponsive on occasion so the camera either keeps circling/gets stuck/won’t move
(c) my face buttons become laggy – jumping in particular becomes unresponsive

These aren’t constant – I can go 15mins no problems, then issues pop up.

It seems having my legs crossed, blocking line of sight, is one trigger. It happens without doing this, mind, with full line of sight. But come on, 5 foot away, Bluetooth should work!

I am pretty tech savvy and have google’d away. My dock is only 5-6 feet away. I have moved away from electrical devices. And I have checked the “calibrate sticks” in settings. Here, they behave perfectly normally the other side of the room

It almost seems that the software is toggling the reception strength of the joy con? Or perhaps the system is allocating fewer resources to controller reception during gameplay?

(The pro controller is fine. Handheld is fine.)

I sincerely hope I haven’t got a dud system (bad Bluetooth receiver?)

(PS I have a launch system. Grey Joy Con. As well as the Splatoon pink/green joy con. Problems happening with both sets. I have tried disconnecting joy con and reconnecting. I have tried full reboot of the system.)

Thoughts>?
Suggestions?

Thanks in advance
J

Not sure what to do about it, but maybe try calibrating the joy-stick and updating the controllers.

@bezbot

Thanks for reply
Alas, I have updated the controllers. I don't see how the sticks need calibrating. As mentioned they behave perfectly in the "calibrate sticks" settings area. As do the button presses.

It really feels like a software specific issue. Unless... the joy con update made them worse?

I will try some Zelda, split Joy Con, tonight to see if that behaves or not. Similar buttons/sticks in use.

Hmm...

The only thing I can think of is a full reboot, which you said you did (just to make sure, you are talking about turning the switch off and on, not sleep mode, right?). Otherwise I think your game/console/controllers might be broken...

It's definitely not a software issue unless it's super rare, but that wouldn't make too much sense imo. I haven't had these issues, but do the regular checklist: calibrate, update, reset, disconnect, reconnect. If none of these help, you may have to ask Nintendo for some help.

Thanks boys and girls

So , update. It is NOT Mario specific. It is happening in Zelda.

It is either something that has always been a problem (and I haven't noticed as I largely use a pro controller). Or, I have changed something in my lounge that has caused Bluetooth interference. I do have a new PC, and I have moved some power supplied onto different extension cables.

I am going to try and lessen the wireless interference in the room and see if that helps.

Fingers crossed

I have same issues. Especially with right joy con. Can be software related. Like it’s more sensitive for distance from Switch. When I move closer it works like charm.
First time I got this problem, I thought game lags or there is something wrong with my Switch because I had similar issue once with Breath of the wild

@JamesNighthawk Have you read stuff like this:

Might just help your investigation further along...

And here's a couple of videos:

And otherwise, you could always contact Nintendo or send them there for repairs.

Either way, good luck. Hope it all works out.

If it is happening with both sets, you have done a full reboot(press and hold the power button and turn off and then back on), updated everything, and calibrated the controllers, then you might have a fault in the system, or somehow have 2 faulty sets of joy cons. And if the pro-controller is working fine then the joycons are likely the issue. Try connecting them to another Switch to see if the problem is there. If it is, the joycons are at fault, contact Nintendo. If not, your Switch is somehow at fault, again, contact Nintendo.

TL;DR - Contact Nintendo.

Thank God I have found someone with the same problem! I thought it was just me and my Switch. Mine is a exactly the same when I play Mario Odyssey. I've had times when I can press the jump button 10 times and nothing happens.
I've got so angry with it sometimes.
I bought my mario Switch bundle 2 weeks ago and was considering taking it back. I sit 5 feet away with nothing in between me and the console.
However when playing with just one joy con it seems fine.
Is this to so with the joy con itself or the console? I might go back to game and ask for new controllers.

I have the same problem when playing Mario Odyssey with joycons fully detached. Suddenly the buttons on the right joy-con stop working for 10 seconds or so. The right analog stick will still work fine though, so it's not like the right joycon has fully disconnected.
After some period of the buttons not responding, often the right joycon will fully drop out and reconnect.
It seems to be software related. I can play MK8 with the joycons attached to the hand controller and I have not yet had any dropouts playing this way.

I have a similar issue occasionally when playing with the 2 joycons separately. Its usually with Y/B buttons not being responsive. Like I try to throw the hat or jump but nothing happens for a few seconds/multiple presses of the button. No issues with disconnecting, But it is occasionally making the game a bit aggravating as obviously a major part of the gameplay.

My Joy Cons went back to Nintendo a month back due to the left disconnection issue. I also included the right one and noted a button issue after I too noticed the right 'B' button having intermittent responsiveness whilst playing Mario with joy cons disconnected.

They came back after four days and the left Joy Con is now perfect but Mario still has the intermittent button failure on the right one whilst playing disconnected.

Mario Kart, Rocket League play fine and have I've only ever noticed the issue whilst playing Odyssey. Strangely, it gets worse during a boss battle as I guess this is when the machine is getting pushed by the GPU & CPU.... so could be a software issue.

Try contacting the Nintendo reps, because I don’t think that should be happening with your joycons. I haven’t had any problems with mine while playing Odyssey.

I have a chronic lack of time, for everything.

Now playing: Okami HD, Mario Kart 8 Deluxe.

We received the Switch for Christmas. I've noticed the same issue with Odyssey. To be fair, the only other game we have is Mario Kart and I feel that the issue could easily be masked while playing this game. The buttons and control stick on the right Joy Con will stop working or be delayed. The other night, the connection dropped out a few times but that did not happen yesterday. JamesNightHawk, what did you end up doing? I'm thinking of contacting Nintendo directly.

I bought a Switch just before Christmas and I've been having the same issues with Odyssey. My Switch is next to my TV but from the angle I usually sit at I thought the screen was causing interference, however facing the console directly doesn't always fix the issue either. MK8D, Splatoon 2 and Sonic Mania all work fine most of the time but Odyssey causes issues.

It seems that nobody has really found a fix but I've found that using my joy cons in the grip fixes most issues. It still disconnects if my legs are between the controller and the screen but it's the best that I can do.
If the grip fixes it then I'm wondering if the motion controls are the cause but who knows..

Following
I have the same issue. Got a Switch for Christmas from the fam. I've got the blue/red joy cons and it only happens on the right, red one. There will periodically be delay or repeated input that wasn't user created on that side, buttons and the stick. It's happened for me in both Mario and Zelda, so it's not game specific. I play using them attached to the grip, so I don't think it has anything to do with motion control. My switch is also sitting in the open next to my tv cabinet, and it's dropped without anything else being on aside from the direct tv box and the tv itself, so I highly doubt wireless interference.
Please update if you get success from Nintendo refurb? I love the system but this bug is frustrating.

I'm glad to know I'm not the only one in the same boat. Got the kids the Mario Odyssey bundle for Christmas and the Joycons are having disconnection issues, left and right. Seems like the right joycon is having the most problems though. Buttons won't respond and R-Stick makes the camera spin randomly when playing Mario or Splatoon. Definitely will be following this thread to see if anyone finds a solution.

I have the Mario Odyssey bundle and have all these same issues with the red joy cons
(a) occasional disconnects on right Joy Con
(b) The control stick on right Joy Con is being unresponsive on occasion so the camera either keeps circling/gets stuck/won’t move
(c) my face buttons become laggy – jumping in particular becomes unresponsive
I particularly notice the face button lag with jumping, and in MK8 where it will seemingly cut out and slow me down
