Topic: If NX is 2017, then what Nintendo Game For 3DS/Wii U?

So let's assume that NX isn't going to hit store shelves until November 2017. That would mean Nintendo would have more 3DS and Wii U games for that year.

But what would they realistically release for those platforms during the wait for NX? I mean its safe to say next smash bros, mario kart, 3d mario, etc are being saved for NX. So let's be realistic please. and oops, sorry for spelling "then" wrong

There are 5 that come to mind to me, aside from what's known
-Pikmin 4 in 2016 for Wii U
-Retro Studios Project in 2016 or 2017 for Wii U
-Pokemon Z in 2016 for 3DS
-Pokemon Gen 7 or Gen 4 in 2017 for 3DS
-Kirby in 2017 for either.

More remakes/remasters could happen too.

Wii U:

  • Animal Crossing
  • Pikmin 4

3DS:

  • New Pokemon (kinda inevitable)
  • Rhythm Heaven (it exists in Japan, I think we'll get a localisation)

One or the other:

  • Super Mario Galaxy (a port/remaster or a 3rd instalment)
  • Metroid that's not Federation Force (Possibly just a 2D one)

If Nintendo publish a great 'proper' Metroid or Animal Crossing game on the Wii U before moving on, I don't think people can have too many complaints with the first party games that Nintendo have put on a system that was clearly not going to be hugely successful after its first year. Both are unlikely, but then again how many times have we said things will/won't happen with Nintendo only to be proven wrong? I'd say pretty much everyone here has if they've been supporting them for a while. Next general Direct in the back-end of January should really set things starlight as far as unexpected games fo for the Wii U, if they don't announce anything major that's when you can say things with a bit more certainty.

The 3DS has loads of games (particularly RPGs) on the way, I think it's safe to say a main Pokemon game will release November next year to add to that. Then there's still a few games that haven't been localised yet from Japan, Monster Hunter X and Stories, Rhythm Heaven 3DS, Yokai Watch etc. And then again for the 3DS I'd say the same, if they don't announce a new Mario, Kirby, Pikmin, Punch-Out!!, whatever for the system in the January Direct, it's safe to say they aren't working on any.

So my take on the matter would be to be patient for at least one more month, until the next general Direct.

@skywake: I wouldn't rule out another Kirby either. I imagine if NX is 2017 then most of the first party 2017 Wii U/3ds games will be out by August.

Hrm.. excellent question. For the Wii U, I would LOVE a Mario Galaxy remaster as I didn't own a Wii. But for a brand-new game? Something like Animal Crossing would be GREAT to pass the time. Would never ever happen as it would most likely be saved for NX, but a Metroid game out of nowhere would be pretty much the coolest thing ever, or even a Prime remaster series for folk like me.

@WebHead: I just listed a few things I thought were on the table. I wasn't ruling stuff out. Aside from expecting sequels to games not out yet I think pretty much anything is possible. We don't know what Nintendo is planning.

I listed the ones I did for a few reasons. Animal Crossing, Pikmin and Pokemon could easily be built on existing assets. They could get a lot out of not a lot of effort. Rhythm Heaven 3DS already exists in Japan and I think localisation is an easy bet. Metroid I think is possible purely because it's a big franchise we haven't seen in a while. Galaxy isn't any of those things, it's just a hunch.

@skywake: plus I think miyamoto affirmed the next 3d Mario is being reserved for NX. And I think retros studios could be making a DK project. As long as they're good.

@WebHead: And at the same time in that Time interview Kimishima just randomly said that Koizumi was "in our Tokyo office with Mario Galaxy". Not any of the other games he worked on recently. Not Majora's Mask, Captain Toad or 3D World but "Mario Galaxy". And I know that I've had a go at people who read into what Kimishima has said but.... that one in particular was kinda specific and an odd thing to say.

As for whether that's on NX or not, it's unclear. There was this quote:

Miyamoto wrote:

From early on, I wanted Mario to be that character in the digital world, so that with each digital evolution, he was there to usher in the next era. I think that maybe when we release the next hardware system, you can look forward to seeing Mario take on a new role or in a new game

and there was also this:

Miyamoto wrote:

Wii U's definitely good enough in terms of hardware performance, it is more the workload of the team. If you look at Star Fox Zero, the TV and GamePad are both rendered in 60 frames, so in total that's 120 frames. It's really just a matter of the CPU speed at this point.

I'm not sure if either of those quotes rule it out entirely. And as I've said in other threads you have to wonder what they would have said differently if it was indeed coming to Wii U. Short of announcing the thing there and then I don't know what people expect out of these guys. Either way there is a pretty significant Mario game in the works, possibly Galaxy 3.

Sunshine HD maybe? I dunno but they better have some big hitters other than star fox and zelda if they want to maintain any form of relevance next year.

nitrolink

My 2016 predictions:
3DS: Pokemon Z, Detective Pikachu, 2D Kirby
Wii U: Pikmin 4, 2D Metroid, Mario Golf

Not that I think sunshine is in the works, but FLUDD with gyro controls could be nice.

While nothing is conclusive and everything is mere speculation right now, I read an article a couple weeks ago from some "insider" that mentioned the NX or whatever it's going to be called would drop before the end of 2016 next year.

Well, for starters, Pikmin 4 is the obvious one. They can reuse most of the assets from Pikmin 3; It's been been two and a half years since Pikmin 3, so it makes sense that a Pikmin game is ''near completion''. Animal Crossing U is another likely candidate due to amiibo Festival and Animal Crossing Plaza. Project Giant Robot and Project Guard as well. For the 3DS, Pokémon Z is going to happen sooner than later. There are plenty of games that are awaiting localisation as well; other entries in the Yokai Watch franchise, Monster Hunter Stories, etc. Nintendo usually don't develop a whole lot of handheld games themselves, so I expect more third party games in general.

Anything thing else is just speculation, but a new Kirby game? Sure, why not? There are plenty of other franchises left, like Punch-Out!!, F-Zero, Metroid. I've always said that I would love to see another Ice Climber game as well. Hideki Kamiya also expressed interest in working on a new Star Fox game or a new Murasame Castle last year, he got to work on Star Fox Zero, so why not a sequel/reboot of Murasame Castle? There are some Mario sports games left, another Mario Party perhaps?

SuperWiiU

Wario Land or other (2D) platformer that has not had a release on the Wii U yet.
Super Mario Strikers or Golf
F-Zero/Wave Race/Excite/1080, I expect Nintendo will bring a racing game if the Wii U has to last to the end of 2017.

Grumblevolcano

Animal Crossing
Mario Golf
Extending Splatoon's content further than January 2016
Remaining Smash DLC would be more spread out

@Grumblevolcano: I can see all that, though I think Mario Golf and Animal Crossing are being reserved for NX.

I perosnally think a new handheld is launching in 2016, but hey we shall see. All great suggestions people! Would anyone like SNES Remix or GBA Remix? Mario paint?

Well everybody has metioned my ideas but I'd say Pokemon Snap U. Would make good use of the gyro and a nice spin off for the series.

I think it's fair to say that more 2D platformer style games are always on the cards. It seems we get a Kirby, Yoshi or Donkey Kong just about every year. Or something a bit more out of left field like Chibi-Robo Zip Lash or Super Mario Maker. So another Wario Land game? Sure, why not? It's about time we got another one. For something about a bit more unusual maybe they could do a 2D version of Kid Icarus. I wouldn't be at all surprised if something along those lines appears.

I'm still hoping for a Trauma Center game on Wii U. The GamePad is a perfect tool for performing surgeries. Imagine using the GamePad as your ultrasound? Or using the GamePadas your surgery kit. Heck, the GamePad could be used as a precision device. And the story could be presented with the use of anime-ish cartoon cut scenes. So much potential; make it happen, Atlus!

God first.
