@Krull I mean it's better than how Nintendo is handling it these days. Their offering of retro content on Switch is abysmal compared to virtual console on Wii U and 3DS...

@Heavyarms55 True. I was happy enough with the first 20 SNES games, but the supply since has been painful. It’s surely time for some GBA titles, even if they don’t touch N64 and later.
I don’t really want it if it’s the mobile port due to the graphics.
My options are the PS1 version on Vita but I hear it has load times and a higher encounter rate.
Or the SNES or GBA versions via emulation on my PSP.
I’m leaning towards playing the SNES version when I get to it. It would be lovely if it’s added to Switch online but I doubt it.
If I have to emulate (which I don’t really want to as easier to lose save and it’s naughty) then I’ll probably buy the PS1 Vita version to salve my conscience.
@JoeDiddley Hadn’t thought about emulation on PSP... Hmmm... I wouldn’t feel that guilty since I do own FFVI on mobile - but I stopped playing after an hour because the graphics are so offputting.
@Krull after DQ1-3 etc it worries me that the mobile version is the most likely to come over. As I haven’t played it yet maybe I’m not qualified to say this but I think the game deserves better. Something like the DS treatment of Chrono Trigger.
@JoeDiddley The PS1 version isn’t great. I own Final Fantasy Anthology; that was my first experience with VI.
The load times are unacceptably bad for a 16-bit port. It’s mainly the menu. Bringing up the menu outside of battle is SLOW. The only other SNES Playstation port that rivals it’s load times is the FF Chronicles version of Chrono Trigger. I have a sweet spot for Anthology and Chronicles because they were the way I first experienced FFIV, V, VI, and Chrono Trigger but they’re pretty bad ports overall other than IV.
I love the Chronicles version of IV because it’s the original Japanese version of the game which had much higher difficulty than the American release. From what I understand every other version is based on the American difficulty setting, which is way too easy.
I still need to play this game (or any main series FF, really) and would love it to make the Switch, but I don't think it's overly likely. My first experience with VI will likely be on my SNES Classic.
Currently playing: Mario & Luigi: Bowser's Inside Story + Bowser Jr's Journey, Ys VIII: Lacrimosa of Dana (Switch)
@BruceCMVI will tentatively be my first game even though I own the DS version of IV. I've been debating between starting with VI or X when the time comes.
Currently playing: Mario & Luigi: Bowser's Inside Story + Bowser Jr's Journey, Ys VIII: Lacrimosa of Dana (Switch)
@BruceCM Mainly because it isn't recommended (Well, the DS version) as a series first due to the difficulty. I've seen VI recommended to get a feel for classic FF and X recommended to get a feel for more modern entries while still retaining the turn-based combat.

Hmm, although playing VI won't help with IV, really, @Tyranexx .... The former has 'special abilities' that are pretty OP for most of the game Every character can learn magic from a certain point & that's effectively how every boss fight towards the end will go
Whereas IV has fixed, standard job classes (since those tie into the story), so only your actual mages learn spells. Which won't win the harder boss fights on their own! Not that it matters too terribly much, just for info
But they haven't played any other versions, @Cotillion .... ? So, your comparison isn't helping! I had little difficulty playing it when I'd only played FFTA & FFIII before! It's not that hard, especially with people who'd be happy to help with anything
Hmm, having played the GBA version as well, I don't entirely agree that it is easier, overall, @Cotillion.... The random battles were more difficult, especially with the limited power of magical healing
Sure, by the time you got to the boss fights, most of those were relatively simple but then the final main story boss was brutal
@BruceCM I have read that there's little to no relation between FF games (similar to DQ, which I do have experience with). I intend to play most of the mainline games eventually, though due to platform preferences and an okay-ish laptop, I'm limited to FF XII on down for now. XD Ignoring XI as it's an MMO, of course.
@Cotillion Hmm, didn't realize there was a release on GBA. If I can find a copy for a decent price, I'll try it! Thanks for the suggestion.
I feel like I should mention that I don't really mind playing IV when I get around to it, I just don't think I want it to be my first Final Fantasy.

Yeah, apart from the clearly indicated sequels, FFs are each their own game, @Tyranexx .... Play VI first if that's what you want! The GBA & DS versions of IV are arguably different enough that it'd be worth playing both of those at some point, though Did people saying IV DS was so difficult say anything about what they thought made it that much more so than other versions of the game?
@BruceCM The details aren't entirely clear to me, but from what I understand the DS version is more like the original Japanese version in terms of difficulty. Other releases of FF IV (or II if we wanna count how the original release was named), like some other JRPGs that came westward back in the day, were made easier for a Western audience.

Yeah, so I've read, @Tyranexx .... But none of the people saying that ever said what they found difficult about FFIV DS. If it was, for instance, the game saying almost nothing about the augment system they introduced, which means you'd need a guide to get the best ones?
Which version of VI do you have, then? Is that GBA one? There's some nice content I think was added there!
