Black Flag goes heavy on the pirate stuff to the extent that that's its big selling point. Rogue has less piracy, but there's still a lot of sailing.

The Ezio Collection is the one to go for if you want to focus more on the Assassins and Templars conflict.

@WoomyNNYes Yes, there is a significant chunk of sailing in BF and R. And sadly the port of the Ezio Collection...is not great. Mildly tragic considering how AC II is probably the best in the series.

Thanks, @Magician. I think we have Wind Waker (gamecube) to thank for my being scared of long boring sailing missions, as dumb as that may sound. I see sailing in Black Flag, and I'm dreading there are long sailing missions. After watching a review of Black Flag, I may be warming up to it.

I think I'm ok with the Switch port quality of Ezio. The historical town based style game of Assassin's Creed 2 is what I was originally looking for.

After what I've said so far, would you still point me to try Black Flag first over AC 2? (I can always buy the other game since they're so cheap right now, and they go on sale so regularly)

@WoomyNNYes Since you ask, I admit BF is my favorite entry in the series.

But if you're adverse to swashbuckling...it might not be for you.

As someone who grew up playing 80s pirate sims like Taipan and Sid Meier's Pirates, Black Flag was definitely the sort of game I was looking for.

The Ezio trilogy is definitely the heart of the series so far as the story and core mechanics go, and comes before the trend of games gradually tending towards being more generic open worlders. It might not technically be the case that every Ubisoft game is the same but with a different skin on but it rather feels like that once you've played a few of them.

Most of the criticisms of the Switch ports are that they're low effort. There are a bunch of known issues from the earlier releases that weren't fixed but probably should have been, only one game is on the cartridge with the others being downloads, and the performance is barely adequate with seemingly little optimization done for the Switch. There isn't anything utterly heinous about them though, especially now that you can pick them up for a third of the launch price with a bit of shopping around.,

To those thinking about buying the game after reading how positive everyone else in this thread feels about it, I felt obligated to balance things out. Long story short, I dislike AC4, nearly to the point of actively hating it. The game starts off strong enough with a fun chase scene that introduces the player to a lucious, tropical setting in the Carribean and interesting characters. The protagonist, Edward Kenway, is also immediately likeable. But the praise basically stops there. Each cutscene is only around 30 seconds to a minute long, and while the dialogue and voice work is well done for the most part, it leaves the side characters grossly underdeveloped. And the overall story arc is simplistic, predictable and ridiculous and ends abruptly out of the blue.
The missions range from tedious and frustrating tailing missions with unforgiving checkpoints, to killing x amount of enemies, assassinations and naval sections. Each story mission blends into the other, which is in no part helped by the pretty, albeit samey looking open world. The combat in this game is also god awful. Mash y to attack, press a if you see a red exclamation mark above an enemies head, and press b to break an enemies defence. That's it. Its ridiculously superficial. The ship combat is slightly more engaging but quickly becomes repetitive after being forced to farm for resources. Overall I found AC4 boring and soulless and has put me off trying any other games in the series. 4/10 for me.

@Zilock Thanks. Yeah, the main thing I was most interested in was the stealth assassination mission town stuff. So, I got Ezio Collection. I can always get Rebel Collection later, if I'm still curious about it.
