I played with my son in coop all the time when the game came out to introduce him to the game. I can only confirm what @ronniego said. At the start the second player buys the diys for the tools in the shop. The diys you get for the items for the first new villager houses or other story related diys the second player learns way later from baloon diys, the crafting villagers or from the message in the bottle. The second player makes no real progress unless he sometimes also plays alone.

@BrittGOAL14 @Gret8888 Not sure if you have these recipes but I have those for flat garden rock, gold armor, and wooden simple bed. I know all 3 of them already, do you want them?

"Fish with friends! Invite other players over to your town and you'll be able to fish cooperatively during the tournament. All points earned across all players are shared during each attempt, and players can then earn swag individually. Plus, having another friend over will give you a +5 co-op bonus on top of the +2 point bonus for catching at least 3 fish!"

For the first time ever I got a meteor shower announced today. Not sure if I will be able to attend but when I can arrange it I will open my gates for spectators. Set up a new chill area at the beach especially for this.

By the way what fruit do you have on your island? The only fruits I'm missing are apples and cherries.

Yes, I‘m so lost sometimes. I totally forgot to reopen my gates. So sorry for all the problems. I still don’t know what happend but now everything seems stable.
What seetings do you mean?
Edit: Oh, I think I found it. Thank you, didn’t know I had these settings activated. Maybe this caused the problems. Hope it doesn‘t scare you off and you will return for another visit.
