I think they can get through 2020 hardware wise as they are. Nothing they do this year can counter the release of PS5/Xbox Series X and to release a more powerful Switch so soon after the Lite could confuse people. The release of Animal Crossing will likely singlehandedly keep hardware sales buoyant into the summer, and a solid Christmas line-up plus a couple of unique third party efforts should ensure a solid Christmas for 2020.
Come 2021 however the Switch will certainly start to show it's age evermore...
No doubt a higher spec version needs releasing ideally within the first half of 2021. This will be enough time to distance itself from the PS5/Xbox Series X release's and should help keep Nintendo in the game power wise for a while longer....

I totally agree. They shouldn't do anything in 2020 to try and "compete" with PS5/Xbox whatever. The best they could do, actually, is suck up their pride and run some sick sales on Switch hardware during the holidays. Lite for 150 bucks - regular Switch for 250 or maybe even a bit less? They would kill.

Then release the Pro in 2021.

@BANJO I haven't looked at it from this perspective before, but I suppose you're right. Releasing two new Switch models within the same time slot of a year wouldn't go over well with confused parents.

@rallydefault Yes, an Animal Crossing or Pokemon Switch Lite bundle for a good price holiday 2020 should fly off the shelves.. Then wait for some of the hype of PS5/Xbox to lessen then release the pro..

@WaffleKnight Especially with PS5/Xbox releasing new generation hardware around the same time. Parents could easily believe the Pro is like those and not just an upgrade... It may annoy parents especially if they have just purchased a Switch Lite.. It's a difficult balance, will be interesting to see how it pans out.

Wasnt there a retailer that listed a Switch Pro briefly? I swear I saw an article on this somewhere. Anyone see it?

@DTMOF84 An online store added "switch pro" to their search terms. It wasn't an actual product place holder. If you searched "switch pro", rather than saying "no results", the online site points you to existing switch consoles. They are hoping someone will buy a regular switch instead. Here's the story with a screenshot.

IF there will be online listings, they will likely wait till after december, january, or february because stores want you to buy a console now to maximize winter holiday sales, rather than wait.

The rumored new switch console release window is late march through june 2021 (if it even happens)
