@Gregcool55 You may want mention which game this occurs with. Some games are worse than others if you change controller modes while a game is open, like changing to half joycons.

(edit: one possible solution, if this is bug with a specific game, then trying booting up the game with using half joycons from the start. If that sounds annoying, I'd totally agree. It shouldn't be necessary, but if the issue is linked to changing controller modes, that may be a way to prevent it the communication error. -end edit)

Nintendo support has a bunch of entries for "a communication error occurred".
**also note: If you get any error codes, you can plug them into nintendo support's search bar to see what most codes mean, often with solutions. (Forgive me if you've used nintendo's support page already.)

Hi there, sorry forgot to say its with the super Mario cart 8 latest one out as I say in 1 player mode online, zero probs,as soon as I take the controller off both sides and get into the same game split screen,I get about 1 min game play, then
A Communication Error Occurred
It can't be Internet otherwise it would do it in single player online, also it dsnt do it two player when playing against the computer,so none of it helps me pin point the problem, something is going on when online in 2 player split screen, this is why I purchased the swith for this very reason to play 2 player on line
MY switch is about 3 foot away from router,my Internet is virgin media 200mgb no Internet is disconnecting when it happens,so I'm stumped as it dsnt happen untill I use both controls separate and online,I will try what u said take them off before I start a game, but this is rubbish if its not going to get fixed as I bought a few games at 40 pounds each to play online 2 player split screen

Did you update the controllers with v13 update? And as mentioned what 2-player games are you referencing to? What kinda Wifi device are you using are you sure that is updated correctly. And how do you mean when 2 playing local game. How is this setup?

Gregcool55

Not sure if controllers are up dated I purchased the switch 4 days ago new and it said a update was ready which I did,but do the controllers have a separate update, and when I say play local
I meen not on line, just 2 player split screen against the computer ,

Ohhhh, I see. If you were playing single player Mario Kart 8 online, you have to go back to the game's main menu and and pick Online Play 2p (for two player). That's when you can change to half joycons. That's just how the game is designed/structured. The game just needs to know how many players will play online before you load up the online feature. The "communication error" sounds normal in this case. Nothing is broken.😉

Woomy I'm sure iv tried that clicking 2 player then taking both controls off,,do I take them off first then select 2 player,or do I select 2 player then take control's off, when I did that today I had clicked 2 player then it asked me to configure them which I did, went into 2 player online, game loaded in 12 players, map chosen, game started 30 seconds got that message,

Woomy I'll try what you said I'll stay off line,go into 2 player mode, sort both controllers out play a game offline, then go into online and see if that helps, not much more can be done, and yes on my TV everything is all close to each other
Tv 7 foot away from me,switch 3 ft away from WiFi hub,200mgb speed and its a very reliable Internet, one thing I may try and that is to take my switch off the 5ghz WiFi and try it on the 2.4ghz and do all the things I said, see if that makes any difference, other than that ,there is nothing else that can be done,it's just weird how 2 player works fine off line and online I get problems, and yet 1 player online no issues at all, something is definitely glitching out somewhere once I go online 2 player, but I'll do as you suggested to get the controllers working before going online,

Oops, I deleted my last post by mistake while tyring to add an edit. But you already read it, maybe not an issue at this point.

Anyway, I was going to say, if you get desperate, and want to call Nintend support, on their contact page, they hide the phone number. You have to select some options, like EU/UK, then pick "other" for category (i think), you'll get what looks like an email form, but at the bottom of the form they give their phone number. It's sneaky. That's how it's been since last winter-ish

Also noticed on joy controllers on the black strip that u conect, it has 4 dots for glow, one controller has only one dot the other has 2 dots what are these green dots and I wonder if one only has 1 green dot that is something to do with it

Gregcool55

@Gregcool55 Number of lights on controller = player number.
One light = player 1
two lights = player 2
three lights = player 3
etc

If you're still stuck, there's at least one other thing you can do, that maybe you haven't tried, maually enter alternate DNS, but take a look at the troubleshooting list in case there's something else you can do. At botttom of support page(first link below), see Possible Solutions, select the Wireless button to see the troubleshooting.

@Gregcool55 You're welcome, my fellow Switch-haver. Well, we gotta help the guy with the word "cool" in the username.

I've been watching or participating with Switch help questions here for a couple years. In all cases I've seen here, if nintendo support troubleshooting pages(or talking to nintendo suport) can't solve a Switch problem, then you likely have hardware failure somewhere, which would require repair, or console replacement. Hopefully it's not that, but knowing this will help you come to a conclusion.

Anyway, you already said thanks. Just wanted to let you know this bit. No need to reply to this one. Hope things work out for ya.

Took all your advice and something has worked lol
Updated controllers
Changed to 2.4ghz
Only connected 2 player controllers before I open online
And it's working, don't know which 9ne or if all 3 solved it,but I wouldn't have known to try that,so thanks again
Something I'd like to do is have one of the racing suite using amiibo NFT
Don't have a clue where to buy them,in the Mario cart it shows lots of racing suits you can have but need amiibo to do it,been on ebay but they don't have the racing characters suits
Can any amiibo activate the suits or do I need a specific amiibo for the suits

Gregcool55

WoomyNNYes

@Gregcool55 NICE! Hopefully it's fixed! Glad to hear.

Yeah, Nintendo's support page is an impressively good resource.

Regarding getting the car racing suits in MK8, you won't see an amiibo that looks like the racing suit. Like you suspected, any Mario amiibo can unlock the Mario racing suit. Here's a page that outlines which amiibos can unlock each of the suits. https://amiibo.fandom.com/wiki/Mario_Kart_8_Deluxe

Amiibos tend to be sold in limited run-offs. If you can't find an amiibo due to scarcity, or want the amiibo DLC, but don't care to collect the amiibo statues, you can find amiibo NFC cards on amazon, ebay, etsy. I got a pack of all splatoon amiibo cards from ebay or etsy. If you get unofficial cards, they work just as good, no downside. Nintendo's amiibo just use a basic NFC chip. Scan the amiibo once to unlock the suit, and always have that suit available in-game.
