Topic: 3rd party seems reminiscent of wii u. Hmmm?

I like the switch. Its a much cooler concept then the wii u. I love the idea of playing it on the go and being able to connect 8 or 10 switches for some lan action.

The Indie support is also awesome. Ive always wanted to try some of these indie titles on ps4 but now that the switch is coming out perhaps it will be my dedicated indie console for titles like shovel knight and stardew valley etc.

Here is the the big issue though. 3rd party!

With the lack of 3rd party big announcements its starting to make me worry that some of the games that will release for the xbox one and ps4 won't be coming for switch. Some of these games I understand might be too hard to port, I get that, but others should port fine. especially the games that released when the ps4 and xbox one came out such as destiny, metal gear 5, gta 5. These games should be easy to port. Overwatch can play on many different graphics cards it should be portable.

where are the announcements?

Here is the thing though. after the 3rd party is done porting games like skyrim or the rumoured LA noir, or ultimate capcom vs marvel 3 etc will they just give up on switch because their newer more advanced games wont be playable in a state that will look good enough? This worries me and Nintendo should know that they need to build our trust by getting new games. Not ones from 2011 like skyrim.

I want to get the switch but I wont buy one until I see the actual intentions of 3rd party and the actual support.

What does everyone think?

I have always wanted Nintendo to embrace 3rd party. But I personally feel they don't care or take the time to work with 3rd party titles.

It's come to the point now where if you want 3rd party titles then simply don't get a Nintendo console. This is one of many reason's am struggling to make a decision do I keep my Switch pre-order or cancel it. The idea of the switch is amazing to me a hybrid console you can play on your TV.

But I simply don't care for Nintendo titles. I don't like Mario games, Or Zelda (even though I do plan on getting the new one if I do get a switch), splatoon. So 3rd party support would be nice for me personally.

Only thing that will sway me to 100% keep my pre order at the moment is if Nintendo announce sometime in the next week was to announce a proper Pokémon game for the switch. I have said this a few times. The only reason I owned a GBC, GBA, DS,2DS was due to the Pokémon game. I have had a 2DS for 6 months now. I have only played 3 games on it and that is Pokémon Yellow, Pokémon Omega Ruby and Pokémon Sun.

@ocelot20 I think for a pokemon game patience should pay off. Its one of nintendos biggest console sellers so it should be coming. I hear so many fanboys say if you want those 3rd parties buy a ps4 or xbox one etc. If that was nintendos thoughts as well then they should just give the switch away for free because they apparently don't like money then because to not cater to the people who enjoy 3rd party games means they are missing out on the opportunity to get those customers.

I dont mind if the games arent as graphically good as the other consoles, the fact theyd be portable is the thing that makes them awesome. plus I have a ps4 but there are games I would rather play on the switch

Keep in mind there's also E3. They won't show up there with no third party games to announce. Besides, I'm pretty sure Nintendo said more 3rd party announcements will come in the next few weeks. There's also the factor of sales. If this thing sells well, games will come. If not, it might be another Wii U.

It's simply too early to tell. My money is on this thing having good 3rd party support, just different compared to the other systems. You won't see as many AAA games on this system compared to the other platforms. If you want that, consider one of the other systems. I already have a PS4, so I'm good on the 3rd party side of things. I love Nintendo though, more than any other game company out there, and I grew up on their games, so seeing as I skipped the Wii U and 3DS, I'm well overdue on my Nintendo fix.

@KirbyTheVampire but June is so far away 😫. I hope Nintendo is right about 3rd party announcements though. And not just ports of ps3 games but new games. Overwatch would be stellar!

I disagree. In fact, I feel like while there are some issues from the past, Nintendo is being self-aware about everything in order to decide 3rd party support and is clearly a response to issues on Wii U.

See, the difference is that, at the end of the day, a good chunk of 3rd party AAA games were on the Wii U early on. In its first year it got Mass Effect 3, Deus Ex:HR Director's Cut, 2 Arkham games, 2 Assassin's Creed games, 2 CODs, Need for Speed, Splinter Cell, Darksiders 2, that 007 game that no one liked (but was still AAA), Rayman Legends, ZombiU, Tekken Tag Tournament 2, Ninja Gaiden 3 etc. And that's just the hardcore games. But most of them came out AT launch, and none of them were marketed for Nintendo's audience and a lot of stores didn't even sell M rated games for a Nintendo console.

Instead, we're getting not M rated focused games, most of them are being spread out, and blatantly a lot of them have not been announced (considering Nintendo announced the very console's release date only 2 months in advance and the new Fire Emblem seems to indicate this is their new strategy). Now this is probably in response to the fact that they could not so easily get a ton of big, newer titles ASAP, but that's called being smart.

@kkslider5552000 but one or 2 good 3rd party announcements would at least give some ppl hope. There is virtually nothing announced yet and the only news about 3rd party is how certain games aren't even being considered. That's my worry.

That's the only news because Nintendo just hasn't announced the full lineup yet. They have nothing positive to report on because Nintendo hasn't revealed more positive news yet.

I don't see how it's at all like the Wii U. The Wii U launched in November and got most of the big holiday games for 2012 in addition to a few older ports. But none were really that different on the Wii U to a massive degree. There was no real reason why you would want to get Assassin's Creed 3 on Wii U if you had a 360/PS3/PC. Worse yet there wasn't really much first party content to do that either.

The Switch is launching in March and isn't coming out swinging with third party releases. So there aren't really that many third party games to be missing from the launch lineup. Additionally any games on the Switch are going to be a different proposition to those same games. The Switch is portable, the PS4 is not. And lastly the first party games on the Switch are compelling.

It's not at all reminiscent of the Wii U.

Not sure how it's really anything specifically like the Wii U. New consoles are frightening for developers because they are a new platform and have to build an install base from the ground up. Just because the PS Vita has Sony slapped on the device and it's a successor to the popular PSP doesn't mean it's going to be an immediate hit. Same with the Dreamcast and every other system that has sold poorly. The 3DS started off horribly but now has a massive install base that 3rd parties are comfortable putting games on. Give the Switch a bit of time and a chance and I think it'll be a success, or it couldn't. It'll be interesting to see what will happen in any scenario.

I was meaning more that the first 3rd party games will be ports of ps3 or xbox 360 games it seams. Like skyrim or even the new fifa game. thats what im mostly worried about because wii u got a lot of ports from games that were already out on ps3/xbox 360 after 6 years of being on the market. Instead of nintendo being 2 steps behind they should be a few steps ahead. Like street fighter 2. Great game but I owned it on my snes in 93. Take away the high res graphics its still the same game.

Um, virtually nothing? Are we going by your personal definition?

Switch should be different. It being portable will help it sell more units, and I can't stop bringing the Snake Pass developer's comments to mind that it only took them a week to make the Switch port. Sure, it's not the biggest game, but it's indicative of how easy the process can be.

How many new AAA games have been announced recently on any platform?

And I've not seen anyone say 'never' for Switch, only 'no current plans'. That will change.

(And yes, I am wondering why this warranted a new thread... )

At the Wii U launch here are the third party, multi-platform releases and how long they'd been out:
Assassin's Creed 3 - Under 1 month
Batman Arkham City - 1 year
CoD: BO2 - about a week
Darksiders 2 - 3 months
FIFA 13 - 2 months
Mass Effect 3 - 9 months
Tekken TT2 - 2 months

The examples you would site for the Switch?
Skyrim - The Special edition, which the Switch version is, came out ~4months before launch
FIFA - Is the new FIFA, it'll likely come out on the same day it comes out on PS4/XBOne
NBA - Is the new NBA game, same deal as with FIFA
Street Fighter - Is a new game. It's not particularly original but it is a new game
Rayman Legends - Is actually an old release that you are free to cite as the lone example of this

Frankly I think the Switch would be stronger if it was able to copy what the Wii U did in terms of a lot of ports of "old games". Especially given that the games people always list as late were less than a year old at the time. Would you be more or less likely to get the Switch if it had Rise of the Tomb Raider? Overwatch? Battlefield 1?

If at E3, Nintendo doesn't come out showcasing any big third party games other than what we know about then I say there is cause to be alarmed. Regardless what others say about getting the PS4 or Xbox One if you want triple A experiences, unfortunately that is what people will do come holiday when comparing what's on offer. It'll be as simple as "Do I take the PS4/Xbox One that has all the big third party games this holiday and I know what's coming out for the next two to three years? Or do I go for Nintendo which has one year old ports from Ubisoft, Skyrim and a couple of Nintendo games and that appears to be it?". Really not hard to see how people will go.

Yes the Switch will have loads of indie games ranging from crap to average with the odd great game, like all platforms, but they're not sitting on store shelves and they're not system sellers. In today's market you can't rely on first party games to sell a system alone. No matter whom you are, that just doesn't work.

I think it's important to keep in mind that they seem to have roped in the JRPG crowd, which was the lifeblood of the 3DS. It'll do better if only because of that (heck, that's why I plan to get one by year's end-- couldn't car less about BOTW or Mario Odyssey).

@CrazedCavalier That is a good point, though I cannot get into JRPG games. I really want to but they just don't do anything for me. Shame as I feel I'm missing out.

There's more to consider than just that. For example in in late 2011 when the 3DS was just getting a bit of momentum it cost $250AU new. A price that wasn't that far from what you could get a 360 for. For that money? You didn't get any of the big third party games. You definitely didn't get anywhere near the same graphics out of the games you did get. We're talking about a platform that was, in raw performance, about 100x behind the competition. But it was portable so that didn't matter. Nobody compared it to the 360/PS3.

With the Switch? It's close enough that you can compare it. It's about as close to the XBOne as the XBOne is to the PS4. And it's going to get some of the same games but not all of them. But unlike a regular console the Switch is also a portable device. A device you can pick up and take with you. People looking at buying the Switch are not going to be comparing it to the PS4 like they compare the Wii U or XBOne to the PS4. So boiling it down to a simplistic comparison like that misses the point.

It's kinda like with 1-2 Switch how people are talking about it as a video game. It's just another mini-game collection, there's not much depth there. Hell you don't even look at the screen most of the time. It's not showing much graphics either. But that's looking at it as a game you play on the TV. As a table-top game? It's competing with Cards Against Humanity, Exploding Kittens, UNO. In that setting? ... it kinda makes sense.
