I'm largely on board with the idea of "Super Smash Kart" - mega loads of fan service. Get those fantastic songs from games like Earthbound in use while you drive through Fourside into the wacky upside down Moonside.
(chop)
And you can choose the song playing by changing the Radio Station like on Out Run.
@NintendoDad
I was thinking maybe driving backwards, how many tricks you could do in a minute, ect ect
+1
Would these be single player mode or multiplayer mode?
I guess there are quite a few battle mode options for multiplayer.
So it could be nice to have single player things to do, similar to a NES Remix, except for Mario Kart stunts.
Like trying to drive over the top of the bridge in Double Dash Mushroom Bridge (within a set amount of time.) . . . or going through the waterfall on Yoshi Circuit.
Both perhaps? Mainly single play but i know some people would love to battle with friends that way so maybe that as well
Well what I most want to see is a new style of Mario Kart in the vein of Forza Horizons or Diddy Kong Racing, something open world that lets you drive and race in overworlds rather than enclosed tracks. But I feel like that style of racer would be good for a side series/second branch of the series rather than the flagship Mario Kart entry, if they did that now I think fans that have been waiting ages for a proper Mario Kart 9 would be disappointed. Best to save that for later in the Switch 2's lifespan as a way to give Mario Kart fans something without having to wait ages for the next entry, Mario Kart does feel popular enough that it needs 2 entries per console.
As for what a more traditional, linear Mario Kart could do now, that's a bit trickier. I can't think of a good gimmick like Wii's tricking, 7's gliding and underwater, or 8's antigravity that would be a fun addition to the game. But there's a ton of extra modes and QoL things that I think could significantly improve the experience, especially by taking a page from Tour (the non-gacha elements of course):
-An actual freaking shop to buy characters, karts, and parts. Who's bright idea was it to have them randomly unlock every X amount of coins? That is the dumbest mechanic ever. A shop where you can buy them with coins is a far more natural and fair way of doing this.
-R, T, and R/T variants. Really helps to make existing courses feel new.
-Bring back Double Dash's two racer karts.
-Recurring tournaments/competitions similar to Tour's, well... Tours. Would really give the game some good evergreen content to keep people playing for years.
-Perhaps include Tour's scoring system as a Score Attack mode?
-Bring back Mission Mode.
-Bring back Special Items.
-Track Builder mode.
Call it MarioKart X or something, but please not MarioKart 9. I just do not like numbered entries (ignore my passion for Splatoon and Portal lol). Plus the X could be "for style purposes," or it could be a way to include Tour as the "ninth" entry and the X could be a Roman numeral. I dunno, just don't do 9.
Crossover racers are fine but I honestly do not want it to be a "NintendoKart" or anything like that. I always play as the cyan Inkling boy in 8DX but I don't want to have to pick between him and the girl and the octolings and the idols and the villains.... and 300 other series' worth of characters on the roster. As long as Kamek makes it in I am happy (and Honey Queen lol).
Launch with 10 cups, totaling 40 tracks. Then the inevitable DLC can bump it up to 80. Yes, this is less than 8DX but I prefer quality over quantity, and 8DX only actually added 8 tracks since it was, of course, a port. And the BCP... well, we saw how the quality was there.

Avoiding any numbers including X would probably be better. In the past they have counted console games but not arcade games in their numbering system. But this gen we've gotten a mobile game and a minor console game so the next mario kart could arguably be 9,10, or 11. Better to just avoid the issue.
@FishyS Good point, I just like how X sounds and it sort of is a nod towards the numbers, but yeah, if it can be avoided then I hope that it is. X is more of a middle-ground, worst-case-scenario solution.

1. All new circuits. No rehashing classics, just all brand new ones.
2. Mario Kart Maker. I don't think this is a big enough thing to be a stand alone game, but it would be great if it was one of the game modes, this may be hard for fans, but Nintendo could use it as justification for making it a $70 game.
3. Completely new Battle Mode. Taking inspiration from the movie, what if one of many new battle modes was having to take out a kart (Bowser?) as part of some big battle on a circuit or "road" (singular route rather than laps of a circuit) you could play as 1 v many (1 being bowser etc) or other modes.
4. +4 Players Local Play. Many people have a TV that is 40" or bigger, what if there was up to 8 players in local play?
I'm not sure what the "gimmick" should be, if it was a reworking of double dash, I'd be fine with it, but I don't have strong feelings either way.
Maybe some new mechanics? Like Kirby Air Ride? Powersliding is in almost every game now, it's becoming stale. They need to explore new ways to make karting enjoyable
There are two major additions I would make for a new Mario Kart that affect both racing and battling.
The first is track variants. Not like how Tour tracks were implemented into MK8D, with the changing every lap. More like how they are in Tour. Each one as technically its own track. I say technically, as I'd have the track selection work similar to how more realistic racers handle them. So Alpine Pass with Mountain, Caves, and Forest as its selectable tracks (which more creative names, obviously). As already hinted at with the track choice, it allows new routes through retro tracks without ruining what made the original loved. There'd also be more solid barriers at the track splits than a transparent arrow.
The other is bringing the fun of battle mode onto the tracks. The original MK8 was onto something with this, but how it implemented it was wrong. You cannot treat circuits as arenas. Everyone needs to be going one way only. The current crop of MK8D battle modes would all work in these race battles, but there's also room for others, such as a slalom mode where hitting the same coloured gate keeps the multiplier going. Regular battle mode would still be a thing, with all of the new additions being reworked for arenas. That slalom mode would keep the gates and colours, but disable them for a few seconds when driven through so someone cannot just keep tightly circling through them.
And lastly, a changeup to how the GPs are handled, where every character has their own set of four races. The character you choose would be the rival during that GP.
I wonder if the gimmick could be giving racers a, for lack of a better term, "Final Smash"? IE, as the race continues, you fill a meter. Hitting opponents adds to it, being hit deducts from it, and Coins now add to the meter along with your speed. The main downside is the Meta would go from "play this character for the best stats, but feel free to change it up" to "play this character for the best stats, and do NOT change to this one because his special move is awful." (Not that I care, I main Inkling Boy because I love Splatoon, with the Tanooki Kart, Button Wheels, and Standard Glider... because ✨️✨️esthetics✨️✨️)

@MarioBrickLayer
I think you're onto something with the "track maker."
I can see them having something like that, even if it's rudimentary at first but developed throughout the life of the game. I fully expect this game to last the life of the Switch 2, and a track maker is something they could easily grow with it (and...gulp...monetize with it lol).
Captain Falcon. We have two F-ZERO tracks, the Blue Falcon, and a Captain Falcon Mii costume, yet the funny "YES" man isn't in.
I'm just a guy who loves adventure. I'm Sonic Adventure 2!
YES THEY DID IT SONIC HEROES REMAKE LESGOOOOOOOOOOOO
nintendo please give us a new rhythm heaven or else i will become karate joe in real life and jump you
Kirby and the Amazing Mirror is peak 2D platforming.
@MarioBrickLayer the only way I see a maker mode working out is if it is in the SNES style. Make your track shape in a top-down perspective, add ramps and obstacles in the same way, then go into 3D view to add slopes and such. Any other style could get wayyy too complicated and while this isn't perfect at least it is less likely to have a ton of garbo creations (though if Mario Maker taught me anything it's that spam courses will always exist in any fanmade anything.

-An engaging, in depth 1P adventure mode akin to, but not the same as, Diddy Kong Racing
-The option to play traditional, survival/stock based balloon battle with no time limit (why has this not been at least an option since Double Dash and DS?!!)
-Monty Mole, Ninji, Chargin' Chuck, King Bob-Omb, Dixie Kong, Spike, and Hammer Bro as new playable characters
-New courses based on RPGs+spinoff games'
-The option to ensure that no repeat courses occur when selecting random for offline and online VS. play. The lack of this option made it super annoying when trying to play a marathon session of all courses with friends.
