Getting down to the studs of the next-generation. Probably going to see a few impactful hardware / software policy changes. I’d be very surprised if nothing changes with the new hardware concerning policies / restrictions / blah blah..

A few business practices that im curious about that may see changes:

  • eShop curation. I think Nintendo sees the flood of AI picture puzzles and lots besides that cause a bloated and chuggy experience just browsing the sales or new releases. Will Nintendo implement stricter publishing policies to get on to the main pages of eShop?
  • DRM for games. Will there be any new restrictions controlling access and distribution of software that would be new for a Nintendo platform? I’m sure Nintendo’s R&D and board of directors are constantly considering how to manage software protections. As much as they lean on their legal to stem illegal distribution, I’m sure they prefer prevention measures in the first place. Maybe some are in the works. And for all I know it’s an issue that could have even delayed the release of the Next Switch as their legal has tackled Switch dumpers and emulators in the last number of months. A possibility knowing Nintendo’s directives for controlling content.
  • Cloud saving. Currently restricted to NSO, but Nintendo now has a lot more incentives for NSO in terms of offerings. In light of this, could Nintendo uncouple the cloud storage options from subscription and give people what should be a base functionality with their new next-gen hardware?

Anyone have thoughts on these points, or thoughts on other policies and practices that might change for better or worse for the next-gen?

@NinChocolate - I don't expect Nintendo to curate the eShop in terms of slop that gets there every day but a policy about AI sounds plausible. Specially because it makes the slop even more questionable.

  • I don't think DRM is going to change much in Switch 2 compared to Switch to be honest. Even related to piracy. To this day, only the Switch V1 (2017-2018) is able to be easily modified and that was due to a hardware issue.
  • I wish cloud saving was a base feature without NSO. I doubt it but it would be nice. It is true that online does have more features. But because of that... I don't deny an increase in price for new gen sounds possible too. The game price increasing is inebitable tho.

And new features for the next gen related to online... hm.
Better integration with multiplayer party invites and more refined and connected feature with UI for multiplayer in general sounds plausible.
Don't know if they'll make integrated voice chat for random lobbies but for friend lobbies does sound possible too, specially if the Switch 2 has a dedicated microphone.

For DRM im just hoping they don't go for something intrusive like periodic online checks, though im hoping that the whole xbox-one debacle nipped that in the bud for good when it comes to console)

(just a mild paranoia on my end i hope)
