Time for at least an emulated rerelease with some nice extras. But I’ve also speculated that Square has an upgraded version of the game that possibly has some marketing arrangement with Nintendo worked out for Switch2 launch. Time will tell.. indeed..
What is anyone’s preference: an emulation of original code, or a new release with graphical reworking (something like their Mario RPG remake)?
Considering that they've previously released multiple enhanced versions, (for example the DS version) a new updated release wouldn't be outside the realm of possibility.
Basically time will tell.
I have a feeling this will be put in the Nintendo Switch’s SNES app. Honestly, it’s long overdo. Or maybe they will release it to purchase as its own product. Either way, I think it’s coming.
@NinChocolate I’m no expert on the intricacies of porting and development time/cost…. But surely the projected sales (based on a screaming fan base!) would justify this getting a green light?? I’d love to see it on NSO app, but something tells me that Square/Nintendo would rather monetise this as a singular product
I would love to see an HD Remake something like the Suikoden one that just released or even one like the FF games got a few years ago. The only thing I can think of is the music might be a problem especially Robo's theme. They would probably have to change it for a release.
I still have my cartridge which I play from time to time on my Super NT so at least have that but I do think it's time for a rerelase of some kind either a full blown remake or port or something.

If they aren't planning an HD-2D remake of Chrono Trigger, I'll be stunned tbh.
Actually let me reword that. If they've set up a way they've already consistently and successfully remade other games with, from the exact same console, and have not at least tried to greenlight a remake of Chrono Trigger, one of the most beloved video games of all time, I'll be stunned.
It's also weird that you can currently play Radical Dreamers on modern consoles but not Chrono Trigger.
Square just needs to give it to ArtePiazza as a follow up to their Mario RPG effort. It needs to be understated but pleasing to look at, instead of upscaled or flashy or trendy looking
The updated Steam version was released seven years ago now.
Very surprised that was never brought over to consoles.

On the one hand it would be a great announcement along with the new system. If we're talking about more than just an emulated ROM dump, I mean a proper remake. But would today's Square-Enix do that? They don't really have close ties with Nintendo anymore do they.. not for the past 30 years. 👴🧓 So if anything it's going to be multiplatform, and knowing S-E they'll make PS5 the lead platform which means it's not going to be easily ported to Switch 2.
@NintendoWife Most of this is untrue. They reliably put out tons of games on GBA and DS and to a lesser extent 3DS (which tbh, sums up every major Japanese 3rd party publisher), and at least some of the HD-2D games and Bravely Default 2 were timed exclusives on Switch. And some of the games that were multi-console were still first shown in Nintendo Directs.
Square Enix has also said they've been considering backing away from Playstation exclusivity, which has basically only meant their most expensive, AAA looking games nowadays anyway. So unless they plan on making Chrono Trigger look like FFVII remake, this seems incredibly unlikely either way.
@kkslider5552000 Hmmm most of this is untrue? Yeah S-E did release minor titles on the handhelds, but like you say: All their big expensive 3D flagship titles haven't been on Nintendo systems ever since their relationship soured post SNES. I don't think that's ever going to revert before Nintendo puts out a cutting edge graphics console again, aka never.
But I agree that their most likely style for a Chrono Trigger remake is "HD-2D", which was and is their solution to tackling lower power systems like the Switch 1.
@NintendoWife ya, that’s right. If SE is targeting Sony’s latest hardware spec with a top-budget title then it hasn’t come to Nintendo, and probably will continue to not come to Nintendo unless they decide their big games will look backwards a generation. Considering they cut loose the idea of a PS4 port of FF16, hard to see that happening for Nintendo
Reportedly the DQ dev had broken the silence on Chrono Trigger, but it turns out that was just the interpreter’s phrasing. But let’s be real, it’s only a matter of time before the remake clock ticks over Chrono’s number!
