For me, it's definitely Mario. I easily grew up with a lot of his magical platformers, 2D and 3D. I should of checked out the Donkey Kong Countries in my youth, but was late or didn't feel keen on trying them straight away for some reason, only saw YouTube videos of them in action (people filming the TV screens in a room with their commentary heard or not). Of course I finally did it; started playing the first DKC game on SNES in 2020, and completed everything in it, but that's about it for me. It was good, and so were the 3D character models with the SNES's graphics.
If I had to admit, Donkey Kong's games are...less appealing for me than Mario's games. Don't get me wrong, I know DK himself, his members and the other related characters (especially Rambi and Squawks) are cool as well, along with the good sense of humour and banana collecting, but since Mario is Nintendo's top postboy, he had loads more adventures and stuff, and still proves successful with upcoming games. Of course Donkey Kong is next to him; Nintendo still keeps things for DK going strong, too. It's just that (for me), some of Nintendo's franchises are cooler than others. I would vote for Mario, Zelda, Metroid, Star Fox, Pokémon, etc. Donkey Kong's games are good too, just in different ways. But Mario certainly proved more for attraction and fun; replaying his games that you did before, like 64. Awesome that was.
My favourite games: Super Mario, Legend of Zelda, Metroid, Star Fox, Pokémon, SSB, Sonic, Rayman, Crash Bandicoot, Spyro, Pepsiman, Elder Scrolls, Turok, Halo, Grand Theft Auto, and various others.

Donkey Kong by miles of we are talking about overall quality. Tropical freeze was the best 2d platformer Nintendo has made in years. The NSMB series just can’t live up to that.
I fear no man
but that thing:
The carrot minigame from bowser's inside story
it scares me
For me, it's Mario. Mario games are pure joy and always hook me in from start to finish. I'm not 100% I ever stuck through a Donkey Kong game all the way? Maybe DK 64?
I love both, but I have to go with Super Mario. Especially the classic 2D platformers and many of the 3D ones. I have a lot of good memories with those games, and they're just plain fun to play through no matter how many times I play them! Mario is pretty much why I'm a gamer in the first place, too. With all that said, the Donkey Kong platformers are also really good, and are generally more challenging than most of the mainline Mario games. I just personally have a bit more fun with Mario.
The last time I played Donkey Kong, it was Donkey Kong 64, I have so many great memories of it! But I did not get to try Donkey Kong Country: Tropical Freeze on switch, is it good? How does it compare ? I played a lot more Mario Games, but the sweet sweet memories of my childhood on Donkey Kong are still there ^_^
