I don’t understand why smash bros is popular.

I keep getting caught up in hype when new one is released, get excited about characters being announced, etc.

Then I try to play it, and I don’t get why it’s popular at all.

I think the character reveals and presentations, and their reactions, are significantly better than the game in Ultimate's case. Ultimate in my opinion has the least content variety in the series, but by far the best character roster and stage selection. Once I get a few hours out of a new character, if that, I shelve the game again until the next. It needed more than fighting and home run contest, and be like the rest of the series in variety.

Actually I have an unpopular opinion for that unpopular opinion.

Melee is the only great single player Smash game, if taken out of context of being obviously a multiplayer game that just happens to have single player (which to be fair, is 90% of the genre). The mix of great variety in the single player was never matched, despite some efforts. Smash Bros 64 is nothing, Brawl had a single player not worth playing twice, too many of 4's modes are not especially compelling (its take on Classic should've been more hated than it was), and Ultimate depends largely on how much you vibe with its spirit system. So to me Ultimate is still 2nd best, cause at least there was a lot to that single player mode I'll likely never touch again, unlike Brawl's take. (and Spirits are a good enough distraction, would still be a high tier single player mode by Smash 4 standards).

Fittingly Melee and Ultimate are also the only two games worth caring that much in multiplayer by comparison (as Ultimate is just better 4 in a lot of ways). I mean, I'd still rather play those other Smash games compared to a lot of games, but I do really think there's a huge gap in terms of what you get in those two games compared to others.

@Clammy @Anti-Matter I can see why you wouldn't like smash bros actually, i have one friend who, although i think i tried everything never got into the series and well there are several different reasons for that. Thinking about it, the only reasons i love smash are:

  1. It being a great party game
  2. It having an awesome story mode which i can play together with friends(only brawl)
  3. It being my competition game with my besty
  4. Online fights
So, well out of those 2 falls out for ultimate and 1 only very occassionally works (especially now). for online you gotta get nintendo online and live with lags and very frustrating fights. That leaves 3. which is my only reason to play the game at all these days.

So personally, it makes a lot of sense why you wouldn't want to like smash very much. I am curious now if you are into fighting games at all though?

Who says I don’t want to like it? I would love to like it, I would love to love it - and get as much pleasure out of it as everyone else. It’s why I keep buying it each generation, and why I keep feeling disappointed

I haven’t felt this left out of the fun as when I tried to like Halo games, and failed miserably

Ooh... This could be fun. Even more fun if I just say them without bothering to justify it.

Brawl is the best Smash Bros
Breath of the Wild is just okay
Halo 5 is better than Halo 4
Arkham Origins is better than Arkham Knight
Arkham Asylum is better than Arkham City
Nuts and Bolts is actually a good game
Geno isn't an interesting character
Super Mario RPG isn't as good as the better Paper Mario and Mario & Luigi games
Resident Evil shouldn't be classified as horror games, B-movie comedy fits better
The Last of Us is a good game, but nothing that spectacular
Samus Returns is the best version of Metroid 2
Persona 4 is better than Persona 5
The Five Night's at Freddy's games (at least 1-3 and Sister Location) are fun
Mass Effect Andromeda is better than Mass Effect 1

There you go, just a few off the top of my head.

@AnnoyingFrenzy Does anyone actually think Metroid 2 is better than Samus Returns? That would be a more controversial statement, surely!

Totally agree about Arkham Asylum. Arkham City is a very fine game, but Asylum is tighter, more focused and overall more memorable. More isn’t always better. (Plus Asylum has the Scarecrow = winner.)

Going by this forum sometimes, defending Breath of the Wild is more unpopular than knocking it. Sigh... Best game of the generation, IMO - but each to their own!

Resident Evil scares the bejeebers out of me - or at least makes me incredibly tense. Having wacky elements doesn’t make it not horror. Have you played Corpse Party? Got some seriously bizarre humour in it, but it is still without doubt a horror game.

My unpopular opinion? 2021 is too soon for a Switch Pro. More to the point, any time is too soon for a Switch Pro. I don’t want a mid-generation upgrade at all. Much better to wait for technology to reach a point where we can get a proper Switch 2 which is at least as powerful as PS4 and XBONE. Don’t care how long it takes - the only other factor is that it HAS to be backwards compatible with OG Switch, and Nintendo MUST allow consumers to carry over their digital libraries to the next system.

@Balta666 Thanks for that - I had genuinely never even heard of that! Looks cool. No stereoscopic 3D, though - point to Samus Returns!

Botw is overrated (maybe not so unpopular).
Metroid zero mission is the best one in the series.
2d Mario kind of sucks, 3d Mario is the best thing in gaming.
FF XIII is actually a pretty good game (and better than XII).
Fire emblem would be way better if you had a chance to grind for leveling up your characters and therefore choose your own difficulty.
Xenoblade Chronicles 2 has better characters and story than the first one (this is the one I will die in front of the pitchforks lol)

Buizel

@kkslider5552000 Tempted to agree that Melee has some of the best single player content, for similar reasons (Adventure is fun and replayable, character unlock methods are the most enjoyable in the series, whereas Brawl's Subspace Emissary drags a little and 4 has very little of interest). But I'd like to add that Ultimate's Classic mode is exceptional, being tailored to each of the characters in the game. That places Ultimate about on par with Melee in my book, although I still long for an Adventure-like mode to return.

Speaking of games in which we don't see the appeal...I don't understand the appeal of Monster Hunter, whatsoever. I've given a few of the games a try (including, most recently, a few hours of World), and it just feels like busywork to me. I'm not sure what I should be finding "fun". I am aware that it's a notoriously difficult series to get into...but what am I missing?

@timleon

Self-improvement, both through actually learning the movements of the monster and through continually harvesting resources to make better armor and weapons. The kill --> loot --> craft --> kill loop is one that leads to an increased sense of power and mastery over the mechanics of the game.

Also worth mentioning how unique and interesting almost all of the monsters are, and there's a significant multiplayer element to it as well where friends can join hunting packs to take on the most dangerous creatures in the games.

@Krull I've played a few Resident Evil games, they are good games don't get me wrong, but they have never even got too close to being scary for me. Resident Evil 4 and 5 especially had classic Resi narm that diffuses any sort of tension for me. Also yes, I was indeed comparing it to AM2R

@timleon @Ralizah I also find that there's also a huge social element to Monster Hunter. Having friends or a team of regular hunting partners greatly improves the game.

It goes from simply grinding and killing monsters, to making fun memories.

@Ralizah @Eel Hmmm yeah I don't think that's really a gameplay loop that resonates with me, unless I'm particularly fond of the core gameplay (and I find Monster Hunter's combat to be very clunky tbh). I generally prefer more structured progression systems, or those built around the game's narrative. It's also not often I get the opportunity to play a game with friends!

Ah well, more than enough games to keep me occupied

Yeah, I'm more interested in MH Stories than Rise, just because that does have a story .... Not sold on it yet, though

Yeah, MH isn't really the place to go if you primarily care about narrative, character development, and the like. Well, maybe MH Stories. I didn't really care for the 3DS original for some reason, but I'm liking the look of this sequel.

Currently Playing: Yakuza Kiwami 2 (PC); Unicorn Overlord (NS)

Well, I never played 1st MH stories, so I do want to know a bit more about that ....

@timleon It's basically a loot-driven action-RPG, where all battles are boss battles. The gameplay loop isn't so different from other loot driven ARPGs, such as in the old days of Diablo II with farming Duriel (boss battle) runs etc for getting the good drops.

The battles themselves can be more a cross of what makes Soulsborne popular crossed with something like Bayonetta or DMC (in some ways, though the battle system isn't combo/juggling driven like those games.)

One could argue the structure is more MMO derived, about farming "raids" over and over and over to get the right loot to craft upgrades. But the real appeal of the game isn't so much in the crafting as it is not sucking in battles. It's more or less a boss rush RPG with a complicated moveset that rewards mastering the moves and reactions like a fighting game (which makes sense since it's a Capcom game.) As such there's no meaning to the goal of getting to the end or watching a story. The journey is the destination.

It's appealing for anyone that likes challenging games, likes loot driven RPGs, likes boss battle rushes, likes fighting/action games, and likes "deep" combat.

It's unappealing for anyone that wants much in the way of story or "goals" other than "beat the next monster, then keep doing it to farm for loot."

Basically MH is like Soulsborne with better combat, better movesets, better items, and better crafting. Or more to the point, Soulsborne is like MH except worse, but with a "metroidvania map" tacked on.

If I have a map printed out for Metroid 2, I do think Metroid 2 is a better game to experience than Samus Returns. The Melee Counter is the worst feature added into a Metroid game. The melee design in Metroid: Samus Returns, in all aspects, is many steps backwards following what Metroid: Other M had seven years prior.

@korosanbo As someone who wants Shantae in smash, I will just disagree quietly.

@Zuljaras they definitely do overdo it with the character design sometimes🙄. Shantae is a very well written character though, and the supporting cast is pretty good as well.

@kkslider5552000 I’ve probably beaten Subspace Emissary about 8 times by now. It makes for an incredibly fun single player experience I love to play through every other year or so. I may be in the minority tho😂

@AnnoyingFrenzy I agree with you on almost every single point! Smash 4 is a bit better in my opinion but every other one you said (involving games I know of course) is exactly what I think.

@Balta666 Nia is the best Xenoblade girl so I’ve gotta agree😉
