@AnnoyingFrenzy Does anyone actually think Metroid 2 is better than Samus Returns? That would be a more controversial statement, surely!
Totally agree about Arkham Asylum. Arkham City is a very fine game, but Asylum is tighter, more focused and overall more memorable. More isn’t always better. (Plus Asylum has the Scarecrow = winner.)
Going by this forum sometimes, defending Breath of the Wild is more unpopular than knocking it. Sigh... Best game of the generation, IMO - but each to their own!
Resident Evil scares the bejeebers out of me - or at least makes me incredibly tense. Having wacky elements doesn’t make it not horror. Have you played Corpse Party? Got some seriously bizarre humour in it, but it is still without doubt a horror game.
My unpopular opinion? 2021 is too soon for a Switch Pro. More to the point, any time is too soon for a Switch Pro. I don’t want a mid-generation upgrade at all. Much better to wait for technology to reach a point where we can get a proper Switch 2 which is at least as powerful as PS4 and XBONE. Don’t care how long it takes - the only other factor is that it HAS to be backwards compatible with OG Switch, and Nintendo MUST allow consumers to carry over their digital libraries to the next system.
Botw is overrated (maybe not so unpopular).
Metroid zero mission is the best one in the series.
2d Mario kind of sucks, 3d Mario is the best thing in gaming.
FF XIII is actually a pretty good game (and better than XII).
Fire emblem would be way better if you had a chance to grind for leveling up your characters and therefore choose your own difficulty.
Xenoblade Chronicles 2 has better characters and story than the first one (this is the one I will die in front of the pitchforks lol)
@kkslider5552000 Tempted to agree that Melee has some of the best single player content, for similar reasons (Adventure is fun and replayable, character unlock methods are the most enjoyable in the series, whereas Brawl's Subspace Emissary drags a little and 4 has very little of interest). But I'd like to add that Ultimate's Classic mode is exceptional, being tailored to each of the characters in the game. That places Ultimate about on par with Melee in my book, although I still long for an Adventure-like mode to return.
Speaking of games in which we don't see the appeal...I don't understand the appeal of Monster Hunter, whatsoever. I've given a few of the games a try (including, most recently, a few hours of World), and it just feels like busywork to me. I'm not sure what I should be finding "fun". I am aware that it's a notoriously difficult series to get into...but what am I missing?
Self-improvement, both through actually learning the movements of the monster and through continually harvesting resources to make better armor and weapons. The kill --> loot --> craft --> kill loop is one that leads to an increased sense of power and mastery over the mechanics of the game.
Also worth mentioning how unique and interesting almost all of the monsters are, and there's a significant multiplayer element to it as well where friends can join hunting packs to take on the most dangerous creatures in the games.

@Krull I've played a few Resident Evil games, they are good games don't get me wrong, but they have never even got too close to being scary for me. Resident Evil 4 and 5 especially had classic Resi narm that diffuses any sort of tension for me. Also yes, I was indeed comparing it to AM2R
@timleon@Ralizah I also find that there's also a huge social element to Monster Hunter. Having friends or a team of regular hunting partners greatly improves the game.
It goes from simply grinding and killing monsters, to making fun memories.
@Ralizah@Eel Hmmm yeah I don't think that's really a gameplay loop that resonates with me, unless I'm particularly fond of the core gameplay (and I find Monster Hunter's combat to be very clunky tbh). I generally prefer more structured progression systems, or those built around the game's narrative. It's also not often I get the opportunity to play a game with friends!
Ah well, more than enough games to keep me occupied
Yeah, MH isn't really the place to go if you primarily care about narrative, character development, and the like. Well, maybe MH Stories. I didn't really care for the 3DS original for some reason, but I'm liking the look of this sequel.

@timleon It's basically a loot-driven action-RPG, where all battles are boss battles. The gameplay loop isn't so different from other loot driven ARPGs, such as in the old days of Diablo II with farming Duriel (boss battle) runs etc for getting the good drops.
The battles themselves can be more a cross of what makes Soulsborne popular crossed with something like Bayonetta or DMC (in some ways, though the battle system isn't combo/juggling driven like those games.)
One could argue the structure is more MMO derived, about farming "raids" over and over and over to get the right loot to craft upgrades. But the real appeal of the game isn't so much in the crafting as it is not sucking in battles. It's more or less a boss rush RPG with a complicated moveset that rewards mastering the moves and reactions like a fighting game (which makes sense since it's a Capcom game.) As such there's no meaning to the goal of getting to the end or watching a story. The journey is the destination.
It's appealing for anyone that likes challenging games, likes loot driven RPGs, likes boss battle rushes, likes fighting/action games, and likes "deep" combat.
It's unappealing for anyone that wants much in the way of story or "goals" other than "beat the next monster, then keep doing it to farm for loot."
Basically MH is like Soulsborne with better combat, better movesets, better items, and better crafting. Or more to the point, Soulsborne is like MH except worse, but with a "metroidvania map" tacked on.
@AnnoyingFrenzy Does anyone actually think Metroid 2 is better than Samus Returns? That would be a more controversial statement, surely!
If I have a map printed out for Metroid 2, I do think Metroid 2 is a better game to experience than Samus Returns. The Melee Counter is the worst feature added into a Metroid game. The melee design in Metroid: Samus Returns, in all aspects, is many steps backwards following what Metroid: Other M had seven years prior.
@korosanbo As someone who wants Shantae in smash, I will just disagree quietly.
@Zuljaras they definitely do overdo it with the character design sometimes🙄. Shantae is a very well written character though, and the supporting cast is pretty good as well.
@kkslider5552000 I’ve probably beaten Subspace Emissary about 8 times by now. It makes for an incredibly fun single player experience I love to play through every other year or so. I may be in the minority tho😂
@AnnoyingFrenzy I agree with you on almost every single point! Smash 4 is a bit better in my opinion but every other one you said (involving games I know of course) is exactly what I think.
@Balta666 Nia is the best Xenoblade girl so I’ve gotta agree😉
@Blooper987 Smash 4 is great, I think the overall moment to moment gameplay of Smash 4 and Ultimate are better than Brawl's (but Brawl's is still fun). It's when I look at the complete package of them all that Brawl comes out on top for me.
I don’t like any of the “proper” 3d Metroid prime games. I can never figure out the map, and my brain can’t cope with trying to remember where to backtrack to as well in 3D as it can in 2d.
I say “proper” as I did kinda like that 2.5d one with the voice acted story which everyone else hated,
This doesn’t stop me being excited for Metroid 4 though
