@Apportal Yeah the social sim elements in the series weren't added until Persona 3 and that's what really gave the series its own identity, but the dungeon crawling and battle system are in line with most other MegaTen games. I also think that the visual novel approach to its storytelling in conjunction with the more accessible gameplay make that series the one I go to whenever I want to introduce a friend to the series.
The pre-P3 games were pretty classic MegaTen in terms of design but all the games have thematically similar stories that do feel in line with the standards set by mainline and other subseries.

@TheFrenchiestFry Yeah when I saw a couple trailers of Persona years back I thought the graphic-style looked incredible. It seems to have all the things I like in an RPG, so I'll definitely check on the games soon. Thanks for the recommendation
@Apportal megaten isn't exactly the friendliest rpg series to dive into if you're not already "rpg-ready", though persona is certainly the friendliest entry among the series... But it's still a pretty intricate game, albeit not As unforgiving as mainline and devil summoner.
But yeah, persona is a core rpg with a life sim bolted on at both a story telling and character progression mechanism, but dungeons, fusion, etc are all still there. The main split is persona is lighter and bubbler atop the darkness and it's more "Jrpg" with a linear story focus while smt is pure occult darkness when a serious tone, less linear, less story focused, and more western rpg style. Smt is the forefather of monster collector rpgs and is specifically what gamefreak set out to simplify as pokemon.
@wargoose@ralizah yeah, i can't stand hollow Knight either. . I can't pinpoint what it is that turns me off these genres including souls. At first i think it's reflexes. It's all reflex and anticipation and i figure my reflexes aren't that of an 8 year old anymore. But then i remember in Splatoon i can flick shot like a fomo, and I'm a maniac with a carbon roller.... So it's not that. . It's not really rhythm... Mario, dk, Rayman are more rhythm. I'm fine there. Something about these genres specifically don't click with me. Maybe it's the memorizing of the pattern... I'm good with patterns in general, puzzles, etc.... I'm not good at memorizing things save innate repetition causing accidental memorizing. But that's it. I hate hate hate repeating what i already did, and the more i have to repeat it the more i race through recklessly just to get done. Ori let's me checkpoint and keep retrying the problem. I'm compelled to try more. Same with Rayman to a degree. But so does hollow Knight to a degree, and that still puts me off. Can't put a finger on it. But i definitely prefer games that have me analyze and react accordingly more than trial and error, and keep redoing until you memorize the "right way" in sequence. Not fun at all for me. That is my issue with w101 as well.
Shame though. The world of cuphead is really special.
Sometimes in my mind, the dominance of overrated popular franchises really overshadowing the newbie franchises or niche franchises.
Peoples keep demanding the same overrated franchises all the time, not giving any chance for new franchises or the niche shine through.
For example, Star Wars, Marvel all the time on LEGO games, their Action games even on The Sims 4. I mean really ?? ๐คจ
They are very popular for mainstream audiences but very disturbing for niche audiences like me to deal with those overrated franchises.
And for new IP like ARMS, some peoples really dismiss that quirky boxing game with extending arms because it was NOT football or basketball. Because it was a Quirky Boxing game and i believe most peoples will react indifferently when first thing they heard about Boxing.
Also, the over popular sports like soccer and basketball really overshadowing the unpopular sports but still good to play such as Kickboxing, Judo, Gymnast, Swimming, etc.
I felt like i need a justice to get equal treatments for the unpopular sports. It was really affecting the games diversity as after year 2010, there was Almost NO developers want to continue to make Boxing / Kickboxing games like used to be on older consoles. The sports like soccer and basketball keep being chosen all the time on almost every single different titles but almost Nothing from niche sports. It was like capitalism that really directing peoples have to like popular sports and forget the unpopular sports.
I really hate the direction like that.
I felt sad to see the new IP or niche franchises got plummeted by the dominance of overrated franchises.
Sometimes, when you play through those unpopular things actually they delivered surprising things that still acceptable to be considered as great things.
I guess raw diamond or hidden gems looks better than overrated franchises.
It was like Rocky Balboa vs Apollo Creed for the 1st time situation.
@Anti-Matter games are made to make money. Popular things sell to many people and thus make money. Unpopular things sell to few people and make less money. And both cost the same amount to make the game..... I don't buy most of that stuff either, but it's easy to see why they make what they make.
And for new IP like ARMS, some peoples really dismiss that quirky boxing game with extending arms because it was NOT football or basketball. Because it was a Quirky Boxing game and i believe most peoples will react indifferently when first thing they heard about Boxing.
@Anti-Matter Wait what? I kinda doubt that was the reason. Of course not...it's a fighting game first and foremost. You're forgetting that ARMS has a basketball minigame, too.
I have played ARMS before (the global testpunch, to be more precise) - I think it's a fine game by itself. I did have my fun with it for the first hour or so. But nothing really convinced me to pay the full $60 for it. I had more fun with Smash Bros., honestly - Smash Ultimate in particular just has way more replay value.
I will admit that I'm not into Star Wars or Marvel either, though, but I wouldn't call those "disturbing." They're just really popular franchises so it's expected to be seen everywhere many times. I'm into Nintendo games and anime so I'll simply focus on those instead.

@MarioLover92 unpopular reply: arms is a better fighting game than smash. . I played arms for months until Splatoon 2 launched. I enjoyed smash story mode and then never touched it again.
@NEStalgia That's cool you enjoyed it. (Same goes with Anti-Matter.) It certainly has its own charm and it's quite unique compared to most fighting games. It's a good game overall - I'm just more of a Smash Bros. guy
I also played Splatoon 2 quite a lot. I partook in a good number of Splatfests (can't wait for the Mario one) and Salmon Run was pretty fun. Haven't got the Octo Expansion though, I remember hearing it's even better than the regular story mode.

I liked the idea and art style of ARMs. I think my issue was the movement. It didn't feel very satisfying or natural to me.
Best fighting game on the system in my opinion is Samurai Shodown. Just the feel of landing a hit is just great. I don't think any fighting game rewards you quite as much for correctly guessing what your opponents going to do.
@Apportal I respect your opinions on what you prefer or like, but I cannot accept your deeming a game "not good" because of those personal preferences. If you have objective criticism that could be used to support an argument as to the quality of Breath of the Wild, then please provide it. Visual taste is a subjective topic, as is whether you puzzle or exploration in your Zelda game. Therefore, you cannot claim if a game is good or not based off of those topics. Personally, Breath of the Wild is my favorite game of time, but I would not state that it is the best game of all time--that distinction I would give to Ocarina of Time or Final Fantasy VII, but even then, I have not played an excessive amount of games. Thank you.
@Apportal Sorry to comment on only your posts, but they happen to be the ones that talk about games that I have played. Yes, Undertale was mostly propped up by memes and the not-so-uncommon troll, but you should look past that and give it a try if you like that kind of game. It is one of my favorite games and has one of my favorite video game soundtracks.
@ThePolitician no problem my dude. I was in a hurry to post I didnโt really get my thoughts clear. So hereโs what I meant; the game really felt like I was running around aimlessly most of the time. True there were countless enemies to fight, but they all kind of felt rehashed and repetitive after a while.
The game had a nice open scenery, but the graphics style was too โbrightโ for me. Weird I know, it was just hard to look at some of the time. Gave me a headache once a while
The open world/puzzle aspect didnโt really go for me either. It seemed completely different to be in an expansive, lovely world, and suddenly be in a cramped, dark dungeon. Didnโt feel natural.
Sorry once more for not being clear the first time. Hopefully I made it clear this time and didnโt offend you much. But judging by your profile pic I may be wrong
Unpopular Gaming Opinion: Joker's moveset in Smash was the very definition of missed potential given both his series/franchise of origin and even Persona's pre-established background in fighting games.
Honestly there was a way that they could've homaged his ability to wield multiple Personas without it being game-breaking. I always thought for the specials each one could've corresponded to a different elemental sklll with a corresponding Persona, like neutral special being Arsene with Eihagon, side special being a Bufudyne or Bufula attack with Jack Frost, a down special with Narcissus using Magaru and his forward Smash being a Strike/Slash physical attack with a Persona like Titan or Ares

New Donk City is actually one of my least favorite large sized levels in Super Mario Odyssey.
I didn't love the drab tone of it all, and a lot of it just felt very "samey" throughout. I actually far preferred the Luncheon Kingdom and Sand Kingdom, because it felt like they had a good balance of visual distinction, strong level design, and good microchallenges.
And for another, a bit esoteric 3D platformer opinion. A Hat In Time is a superior game to Mario Sunshine. Sunshine's mission design is such a mixed bag it's not even funny. For every blooper surfing or boss fight level there's a sand bird or watermelon level, and it feels like every other level is a red coin collection mission.
A Hat In Time, while not having as robust a set of mechanics, is genuinely fun for nearly every level, and makes me want to keep replaying.
