@NEStalgia My issue with Octopath and to a lesser extent bravely default was the story. They play ok but there's no sense of urgency to the storytelling. So its really easy to stop playing and just stop.
With RPGs I think you need to do one of Three things really well. Create characters that you like to hang out with, have a world where it's genuinely interesting to see the next area, or have a story that really captures a sense of adventure.
Octopath really doesn't tick any of those boxes, it has a cool art direction and an ok battle system. That's not good enough for me to play a game for 20 hours plus.
But boss fights shouldn't be a MASSIVE difficulty spike, generally, these days, @NEStalgia .... Give us some examples of modern games that have that problem?
Wow I’m getting sad inside hearing all the Undertale criticism. EarthBound is better (even Mother 3 is) but it’s still really cool.
It’s serious and funny at points, which is something a lot of games don’t seem to understand anymore. The battle system is unique and always changing. The multiple endings keep it fresh and allow for some fun discussion with friends. If we’re gonna talk about Undertale I might as well say: Deltarune lost a lot of what made Undertale special. It starts of fine but loses a lot of the excitement and mystery that the first game had throughout.
@NEStalgia the only thing that really stuck with me from Octopath was the soundtrack. Which is why I bought the OST and sold the game lol.
@Blooper987 I don't mean to suggest Undertale is bad. It's pretty amazing that it was created almost entirely by one person. I think the writing is kind of sophmoric. It's snarky and obnoxious, but still wants to deliver a "deep" message.
Contrast that to Earthbound, where you literally defeat a shapeless embodiment of existential horror with prayer. In 1995. On your SNES. And the game doesn't linger on the moment - it happens, everybody goes home, and it's up to you to interpret the meaning.
Earthbound is like if Charlie Brown and the Cthulu Mythos had a JRPG.

@Losermagnet "Earthbound is like if Charlie Brown and the Cthulhu Mythos had a JRPG" I really like this description.
Seriously, this!
It helps that Mothers story is designed and written by a professional writer, not a garage game designer... That certainly plays a big part in the difference.
Let's not forget how involved Iwata was in earthbound development. Itoi was the writer, true, but those two were a tag team.
@jump@NEStalgia. To be fair, I think Yahtzee has referred to the game that way (or something very close to it). It's true though.
Itoi and Iwata are definately video game tag team champs. Itoi was the idea man, and Iwata made it work. That's how I see it at least. I also see them putting the Doomsday Device on Hironobu Sakaguchi.

Hmm, you seemed to be talking more generally, though, @NEStalgia ....? I'm not a fan of Hollow Knight to defend that one! While I haven't played any Bravely games yet to compare those. Generally, with rpgs, I don't feel like most of the regular battles are interesting, so I like suitable boss fights!
Here's an unpopular opinion aimed at @ralizah. I don't like cuphead. It's not that i think it isn't well made, it's just that what it is is apparently a thing I don't like. I love the art style and sound design and world which makes me that much more sad that i just really dislike the gameplay. I've tried it periodically on two platforms, and never got to more than the first run end gun and the slot machine and carrots bosses... Bash my head against the wall over and over, not really enjoying it, and then give up.
I wish they'd make a different kind if game in the same world and style. I love the feel... Just the game.
@NEStalgia Yeah, if you don't like run'n'gun/action platformer games, you won't like Cuphead. It's an amazing game, but also very solidly situated within that niche.
You could always watch that terrible looking cartoon version of Cuphead that's set to premiere on Netflix.
Currently Playing: Yakuza Kiwami 2 (PC); Unicorn Overlord (NS)
@Ralizah I loved super contra and some others back in the day, but, yeah, the genre has apparently drifted away from me. Shame, i adore the design. Gimme an rpg, plain platformer, etc in that world and I'm there day 1. I do wish i could experience more than 3 levels of this one!
Oh geeze.... Any time a Netflix series based on a video game is announced, an angel gets it's wings ripped off.
@NEStalgia Yeah Cupheads a tough one. It's all about memorizing patterns. It's very much like Furi, or some of hollow knights bosses.
The start the whole stage again thing is annoying, because I tend to get all the way to the end with max health and then die on the last section of the level. It's difficult though, because if it had checkpoints, I think if would be really easy.
@NEStalgia Games like Cuphead and Contra 4 are almost like rhythm games insofar as they rely on recognizing and anticipating the flow of complex enemy reinforcement patterns and harmonizing with an underlying level design structure that allows you to eventually speed run levels without breaking a sweat. It's about attaining a state of zen after going through hell.
The boss stages in Cuphead follow the same basic underlying philosophy, except with boss attack patterns and grasping how the flow of battle changes during different parts of the battle.
