@subpopz @Snaplocket Oh cool! I've still got my GameCube in storage (100 miles away!) at the moment after moving house - but that version (even if it is buggy) might be my best option If I can grab a copy, it could be the perfect motivation I need to finally make that long trip and dig out my ol' GC! Thanks!

My previous comment seemed to go over well. I was expecting a raging mob outside my door to be honest.
Anyway, here goes next:

  • 2D Mario >>>>> 3D Mario (I finished the main story of Odyssey in 6 hours and couldn't be bothered for the rest)
  • 2D Zelda >>>>> 3D Zelda (better puzzles, better dungeons, better combat,... better everything)
  • I never understood the appeal of Rare's collect-a-thon games (Banjo and DK64 in particular)
  • 3D fighting games like Tekken and Soul Calibur are more like glorified memory games to me than fighting games. They don't feel intuitive at all. Same with the entire Mortal Kombat franchise.
  • Random enemy encounters in RPGs can die screaming in a fiery hell.

@HappyAxiom Ooo! Controversial! (Haha! )

The frustrating thing the 2D games, to me, was that they always felt like they were trying to unfairly trick you - whenever you'd get up to full speed, you could almost always guarantee that there'd be some nasty trap just around the corner that would stop you in your tracks

I feel this way about Sonic 2. This game is frustrating, and also don't even look as good as the first one. Bad gameplay, bad music, bad graphics, and Super Sonic that is one of the worst thing happened to the hedgehog ever in my opinion.
Sonic 1, Sonic 3 & Knuckles and even Sonic CD were much more fair and intuitive. More recent Sonic games like Sonic Advance were completely unbalanced, they were totally unfair but at the same time they were so easy that it did not matter at all that they were unfair. Still less bad than Sonic 2 however.
I love Sonic 1 and a few other episodes too, I would like to love Sonic games as a whole but too many of them are outrageously bad.

I used to be a ripple user like you, then I took The Arrow in the knee

  • 2D Mario better than 3D Mario? Yeah, I'd go along with that
  • 2D Zelda better than 3D Zelda? Here's where our opinions begin to differ! Ocarina of Time, Breath of the Wild, Skyward Sword and Twilight Princess might possibly be my four favourite Zelda games (the first couple are certainly my top two) ..I've nothing against the 2D Zelda games - I just always find that I prefer it when an adventure game is in 3D for some reason? ..and to me, Ocarina has the perfect blend of exploration, story telling, dungeon crawling and a wonderfully curated difficulty arc (gaming perfection!) - so until I play a 2D Zelda that I can unequivically say that I enjoyed more than OoT - I'll continue to hold the 3D games in (slightly) higher regard
  • Rares platformers? Well, I love 'em! As someone who never owned a PS1, I often wonder whether that was mainly down to the absence of anything else (even as an N64 superfan, I have to admit that good games were relatively few and far between!) ..but Rare games felt like they filled the first-party software gaps beautifully back in the day - I thought that both Banjo and DK were charming games, which I poured many hours in to and thoroughly enjoyed from start to finish - and collect-a-thon's also encouraged replayability, which was especially great when you knew that it'd be a good few months before the next good game would come along! Haha!
  • I agree with you with regards fighters! Nothing more to add!
  • RPG random encounters? I dunno - I play RPG's at such a slow pace (exploring every nook and cranny & battling everything that I encounter) that my character often seems to always be ahead of the difficulty arc (stronger than I should be at a given point in the game) so it's never really been an issue in the games I've played! ..and that's the main issue that I have with RPG's (most of the ones I've played at least) - for us slow crawlers, the mid-to-late game stuff can feel a little bit easy! (eg. the Elite Four in Pokémon is a doddle if you've unintentionally grinded your main monsters up to level 70+ by that point because you've just been dawdling around for most of the game!)

Ahhh - agreeing on 2 of the 5 points ain't too bad I guess!

@LuckyLand Yeah, I'm with you there - without the 'traps', perhaps the games would feel a bit too easy - particularly if the slower sections don't feel all that tough (I haven't played it, but I hear that Forces is a bit like that and - as a consequence - doesn't feel challenging at all) ..the original seemed to strike a nice balance between slower platforming sections and fun speedy runs - and it was those slower sections that'd give you that much-needed challenge - but whenever, in a Sonic game, they'd put a little spike at the end of a speed section just to catch you out, it just felt...cheap.

Not at all. These are unpopular opinions anyway. I wasn't expecting anyone to agree with any of them to be honest.

Random encounters in an RPG CAN work. If you were given a proper warning on when a battle could happen while still being random it could give a sense of dread and immersion (see 7th Dragon or Etrian Odyssey).

Maybe, haven't tried any of those games you mentioned. The mechanic sounds interesting though.
Random encounters is the prime reason why I don't like most JRPGs. I usually love the stories and characters in those games, but I always get turned off by random encounters. I just wish it would go away.

Eel

Etrian Odyssey games come with a little radar in the corner of the screen that changes color as you explore the dungeon.

When it gets red, it means a random encounter could happen next time you move.

Random encounters work in Pokemon. Since it's not everywhere.

Random encounters just depend with the game, some made it work, some... don't. I think they should just make a slider such as Bravely Default or something should be good :V

I mean, airline food is indeed garbage most of the time. They tend to be pretty bland compared to anything else.
Also, I think I'm more likely to argue that there seem to be some people (even in this thread) who always had some sort of unpopular opinion(s). It feels almost unnatural, even.
But hey, this is the Unpopular Gaming Opinions thread, after all. A safe haven of sorts.

@CreamyDream Ah, I see what you were going for now. Thanks for the clarification! By the way, let it not be said that I too am sort of Sonic hater as well; quite the opposite, actually. Just putting it out there....

@CreamyDream I honestly wasn't aware that it has become a trend to dislike the Sonic games. I've always thought I was in the vast minority on this. Honestly.
As far as your question goes if I've ever played some of these games personally. Yes, of course I have. It would be very dishonest of me to make the claim otherwise, wouldn't it?

The first time I came into contact with Sonic was at a very young age at a friend's house who had a MegaDrive (I owned a NES). I remember to think it was very cool at first, but once I played it - and I played it a lot - the gameplay never "clicked" with me. I also tried Sonic Adventures on Dreamcast - which I owned myself - and Sonic Colors on Wii.
I also tried Freedom Planet on Steam which is considered a very good Sonic clone, and once again the gameplay didn't do anything for me.

As to why I don't like the gameplay: through the level design and the speed of it all, I always have the feeling I'm not entirely in control of my avatar. Large parts of it feel like the game is playing itself.
But hey, I don't want to dismiss Sonic, not at all. If you like it, that's great. It just isn't for me.

The DS and Wii Rhythm Heaven games are two of the best Nintendo games in the past decade. Top 10, easily. And are better than maybe every new Nintendo game released on Wii U (3 or so of the games are around the same level maybe?)

And once again, Rayman Legends is also better than every first party Wii U game. Tell me 3d World's use of the gamepad isn't disappointing compared to Legends, I dare you. COME ON NINTENDO YOU WANTED SO BADLY TO MAKE YOUR WEIRD GIMMICKY CONTROLLER CONSOLE, ****ING USE IT. WHY IS THE PUBLISHER BEHIND ASSASSIN'S CREED OUT INNOVATING YOU WITH YOUR OWN GIMMICK?!

I do NOT think Smash has too many sword fighters.

Smash has 12 of them, 14 if you count Pit and Dark Pit, and I just don't see what the big deal is.

EDIT: I'm unsure as to how much this sentiment is still relevant. Either way, I've always thought the number of sword fighters was fine.

I never had any problems with it either. Most of them play very differently from each other, so it's perfectly fine to me. I find the notion that it's OK to have 30+ fist fighters but it's not OK to have a dozen or so sword fighters completely ridiculous.

BTW, Ganondorf desperately needs a sword as well.
