I'm a Dream Fighter. Perfume is Love, Perfume is Life.
I'm still waiting for Nintendo to even try to surpass 64 and Sunshine. Crossing my fingers that Odyssey is the right step.
LOL, you gotta invest in a time machine. Nintendo surpassed those games about 10 years ago. And again 3 years later.
And I'm just gonna say this about M&L; as long as I'm able to go through battle without taking damage, I'm good. Actually going through battle without taking damage? Well, that's always the challenge. Oh, and M&L may be my favorite RPG series.
Now, with my own unpopular opinion. Pokemon Sun... is terribly underwhelming. Pokemon X/Y is faaaar better.
The first half of Sun was only decent. The game only started to spiral downfield at that point: a very lame and forgettable story, incredibly cheesy and underdeveloped characters (not to mention their weird animations), and what felt like the most disjoined region in the series of Pokemon. The music was good, I'll give it that... but everything else? Meh. I'm not sure why a lot of people called the game revolutionary (get rid of gym leaders, OHMAH HOW INNOVATIVE!!!) when it was pretty much a step in the wrong direction more than anything else.
At the end of the day it just feels like Pokemon hasn't transitioned well into 3D like other series; X was somewhat clunky, unoptimized, (frame rate drops, anyone?) and lacked post-game content... and Sun/Moon was, well... see above. I haven't played ORAS, but I'm not even expecting any different from that game. I'd prefer the next Pokemon game go back to sprites but be placed in a 3D world; exactly like Awakening and Fates did it. Heck, that was the case from Gen 4 onwards until X/Y. Even a 3D Pokemon MMO doesn't sound promising at this point...
@DarthNocturnal Haha, yeah. I meant Galaxy/2. I apologize if I was a bit condescending with the whole time machine thing. It was merely a joke.
But Galaxy/2 a step back? I mean.. I'm not even sure what to say to that. I (and many others, I presume) think Galaxy/2 are perfect pieces of gaming software. I'm guessing the "step back" is due to the lack of a large overworld in those games? Well, I think the diversity of stages and galaxies, ideas, and sheer presentation more than makes up for it. It's really a brilliant game. That's not to say Sunshine and 64 were bad, though. But Galaxy/2.... man, I'm not even sure Odyssey can come close to those two. We'll see.
Made some minor edits...
@DarthNocturnal While I cannot side with you in regards to not being overly fond of the two Galaxy games, seeing as Super Mario Galaxy 2 sits just behind Final Fantasy VII as my favourite game of all time, I am pleased to see somebody else who likes Superstar Saga for being the game with the most meat on its bones.
Dream Team was an absolute slog to get through, and those dreamland scenarios were mostly joyless. I also felt that the game took forever to get going and when it finally did, I couldn't wait for it all to be over and done with! There was so much backtracking, so much padding and so many battles with annoying 'gimmicks' too.
I thoroughly enjoyed Bowser's Inside Story, and Partners in Time had a handful of clever, funny and joyful moments that made it worth playing through however, Dream Team felt like a completely different team came along and tried their best to impersonate previous games.
TL;DR - Superstar Saga continues to be the best game in the Mario & Luigi series for all the reasons you and I have mentioned. I'm still waiting for another pair of villians that are as good as Cackletta and Fawful!
Gamecube is an overrated system with not that many great games for it. I think the Snes and even the Wii are infinitely better
The Gamecube controller is ok at best ( I really don't understand the claims that the GC Controller is the best of all time)
Sun and moon is not the 10/10 most people say it is. It's fun but I think island trials don't really make up for removing gyms
Breath of the Wild is not a 10/10 and has an incredibly disappointing plot that feels like it's going somewhere in the beginning only to end with a whimper. Most of the 4 champions are 1-dimesnional and cliched, albeit enjoyable cliches. In addition, BotW has some major flaws with some of its design like the dungeons and bosses being far too easy as well as the durability system being more of a hindrance than a benefit. Armor and food completely break the game's balance and fights get very repetitive.
Kirby has been far better than Mario for YEARS, at least in regards to 2d entries. There is so much creativity present in Kirby titles that hasn't been in any of the New Super Games for YEARS.
@TheLZdragon Truth be told I've never finished Majora's Mask. I only ever played it as a kid at a friend's house and the 3 day time limit stressed me out too much. I definitely want to play through MM 3D to form a more complete opinion now that I'm older.
I love Ubisoft, commend them for always backing Nintendo when no one else does, appreciate the long list of AAA titles brought to Wii U despite its disastrous state of affairs which were evident as early as January 2013, and truly believe they are the closest thing to a 3rd party Nintendo we will ever see. They care about their games- their CEO Yves Guillemot cares about video games (he helped found the company when it was just starting out- he's not some corporate hack, he's more like Iwata was with Nintendo). That's extremely rare for a mega publisher nowadays.

Oh I have one. Assuming I haven't said it before. But linearity is sooooo much more enjoyable for me, most of the time, than open world. Sometimes, I don't care about getting lost in some world. I love being pushed down a path packed with content. Which is why I find the Galaxy games to be the closest to the pure essence of fun. All gameplay, no fluff.
Also why I much prefer Skyward Sword(though it did suffer from padding) to BoTW
@DarthNocturnal I guess the arguments you gave for Galaxy/2's "step backs" are fair, although I'm not so sure I'm 100% with them. Sure, Mario couldn't punch (he could kick, though... ) or perform the fancy tricks he could in Sunshine, but I felt that his spin attack (and even the star bit shooting thing) was more than enough for what Galaxy/2 was going for. And about the hubs.... well, I guess the Comet Observatory is stripped down compared to the hubs in the previous games. But hey, it had the library. That was a stroke of genius and is actually a part of one of the reasons why I love Galaxy (Galaxy 2 didn't have it, sadly...).
And yep, the levels in Galaxy were more of "Point A to Point B" rather than open world. But what Galaxy loses in free roaming, it waaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaay more than makes up for it in the diversity of levels. I'm not even sure where to begin, but you should know what I'm talking about. I still don't get the general assumption that linearity in games means that those games won't match up to ones that allow players to explore... at the very least, I know I don't operate under that assumption. Maybe that's why I also think 3D World is a brilliant masterpiece (hey look, another unpopular opinion ).
So I guess that's that. I don't know, I think I'm just standing up for my best games of all time... I may have to lay off for a bit, lol. Or I may just comment on other unpopular opinions. Oh, and I'd also take a Sunshine HD, as long as the physics are fixed. That game was brilliant, but those Jupiter physics....
@Oat The GameCube controller is a personal favorite of mine, although the GamePad almost overtook it (no analog triggers, sadly... but something tells me the Switch Pro controller may do the trick. And yes, I know the Pro Controller doesn't have the analog triggers). I think a lot of people, including myself, think that controller is the epitome of the comfortable gateway between reality and the game's world. My only problem with it is that I still haven't "memorized" the placement of the X and Y buttons. Especially when I'm playing Paper Mario TTYD, I always have to look down at the controller to confirm which button is which. Oh well...

I too appreciate some linearity, but I don't really enjoy the way it's delivered in the Galaxy games. The hubs are just an unnecessary annoyance to me. I think I prefer a pure straight line from beginning to end, with some sort of direct narrative or physical connection between one level and the next. I tend to get bogged down by the hubs in Galaxy and remembering where to go to get to a certain part of the game. (Disclaimer: I haven't actually played more than one level of Galaxy 2, because I haven't got round to finishing Galaxy yet).
You guys had me at blood and semen.
What better way to celebrate than firing something out of the pipe?
@Vee_Flames I personally think the dual shock 4 is the most comfortable controller I've ever played with. That controller is BEAUtiful. The gamepad is surprising more comfortable than I initially gave it credit for. I hated it at first and then I played BotW for more than 140 hrs and it really was like the gamepad was invisible, that's how comfy it was
@gcunit you'd probably like galaxy 2 more in that regard. It's hub is hardly anything more than a place to get some spare coins or star bits. I honestly don't remember if there was even anything worthwhile on the Mario ship, haha. But I see what you mean. The original galaxy had a larger hub than necessary without the personality or mystery of something like peaches castle in Mario 64
Going off of this, here's my opinion that will probably be unpopular:
Galaxy 1 & 2 are overrated, and Super Mario 3D World is a better game than Galaxy 1 & 2.
As @DarthNocturnal mentioned, the levels are very linear and there really isn't much to explore, unlike Sunshine and 64. While the Galaxy games have arguably the best presentation of any Mario game so far, their variety gets old. Yes, I know many people say that there is a lot of variety in levels. But idk, after playing Galaxy and a lot of Galaxy 2 a lot of the levels felt very similar to me.
Also, I dislike the non-HD Wii graphics, dislike the pointer controls (nowadays for me it is always a pain to deal with the sensor bar; from the couch in front of my TV it doesn't work, so I can't relax and play the darn game) and dislike the annoying waggle-to-spin move. Also, I don't like playing with seperate controllers in each hand (i.e. the Wiimote in one hand and the nunchuck in the other hand). Though all of these complaints are more so things I dislike of the Wii itself, they still present issues in Galaxy 1 & 2 for me.
Super Mario 3D World has an amazing amount of variety. I feel like each level is completely different, which is amazing and to me feels way more diverse than the Galaxy games. I also love the HD graphics, and love the traditional controller scheme, no annoying IR controls, and no annoying waggle. Plus the multiplayer is so much fun; when playing with multiple people it makes the game much better. Plus the Mii speed runs feature is pretty cool, and I like the flag and trying to grab the top as opposed to just grabbing a star. Had it been more open I would have liked Galaxy 1 & 2, but it's so linear and Super Mario 3D World does the linear so much better that I like Super Mario 3D World better.
