As big as some people here ranted about various graphical downgrades of games from other consoles im surprised that no one yet commented on the very apparent graphical downgrade of BOTW as compared to its reveal trailer.
@diwdiws I've seen it mentioned once or twice in BotW chat, but to me it's a non-issue. Doesn't matter who the developer is, I take any cinematic game trailer/reveal with a wheel-barrow load of salt in terms of it being a fair representation of the graphical performance of the end product in gameplay, so I never built much expectation for the graphics of BotW based on that reveal.
But also, the graphics of BotW are not what I think most people are getting excited about. I think it's more the overall atmosphere created by the sense of being 'in the wild' from the freedom of exploration, the sound FX, the emphasis on nature, the day/night lighting etc. The game to me looks like a celebration of the natural environment, built around the Zelda universe.
And besides, I generally find games look better when actually running on my TV/gamepad than when I'm viewing them on Youtube etc.
You guys had me at blood and semen.
What better way to celebrate than firing something out of the pipe?
@gcunit well im not disputing that. I just find it weird that when it comes to zelda graphical downgrades are ok while when witcher 3 came for example, people were screaming murder that the games graphics is lower in fidelity that the reveal trailer.
@CreamyDream I was gonna say the same thing, but he has a point - The start of Wind Waker sucks. Just...flat out sucks. I've replayed Wind Waker standard 4 times by now, and that stealth mission alone makes me want to put the controller down and play anything else. Even Sonic Heroes. Even the parts before then are monotonous and can last way longer than necessary. I know the same can be said about Twilight Princess, but at least once it gets good, it never stops.
And the sailing is slow. It's atmospheric, yes, but if you're actually trying to get somewhere, and you know where it is? It's actually pretty aggrivating, at least until you unlock those teleporting tornadoes. I'm really glad the remake introduced a faster sailing option, because I doubt I would be able to convince myself to go back a 5th time without it.
Also, the fetch quest near the end really sucks, as do a lot of the dungeons in the second half (The Tower of the Gods and The Earth Temple, especially). In fact, looking at the list just now...it has the fewest dungeons out of any Zelda game except Majora's Mask, but unlike Majora's Mask, I didn't think most of them were that memorable. The first 3, maybe were really interesting, but after that I always felt they became a chore.
All in all, though, I think kkslider's point is that "even the biggest problems in a Zelda game aren't that bad," which I can obviously agree with. I'm not a huge fan of OoT, but not for any particular reason - I just think it's not as impressive as ones that came later. There's only two dungeons that I outright disliked (well, one dungeon and one mini-dungeon. In fact, they're back-to-back. The Well where you get the Eye of Truth, and dungeon immediately afterwards that you really need it for), but other than that...my biggest problem was actually the hideous 32/64-bit era graphics that never really looked good. And the 3D version already fixed that, too, so I have no qualms replaying that now.
I mean, I haven't played Majora's Mask in a while, but it will probably still be my least favorite 3D Zelda game (assuming Phantom Hourglass and Spirit Tracks count as 2D), largely because of the time mechanic doing the opposite of Wind Waker's sailing, and putting too much pressure on me to get things done fast. It gets exhausting for me really quick. I mean, I've never been known for being timely...but that at least is a matter of taste. I can still greatly respect the game's strengths, even if I can't do it for more than an hour or two at a time...
The speed sail is locked behind that highly irritating auction process, and what's more, I missed whatever the clue was about where to find it, but I'd heard it existed so spent ages looking for it before giving up and resorting to an online guide. Would not want to repeat the auction on another playthrough.
That section where Link has to freeze those gooey oil thingumies and then repeatedly roll to the far end of the corridor to climb the steps before they disappear, because it's non-sensical for rolling to be faster than running.
Other than that it was a really nice game, if occasionally frustrating and a little lacking in narrative hooks.

I think my unpopular opinion is that I didn't find the sailing slow at all. Actually, having recently played HD, I always assumed that the default sail was the "Swift Sail", and didn't realise until now that it was a separate item that I had to go out of my way to get (I feel quite silly actually!) Clearly the speed of sailing never bothered me...
I can 100% see why you hate the stealth part, but I personally always liked it a lot.
Sure, more power to ya. The rest of the game is great by most standards, anyways, so I'm glad not everyone gets put off by a...unique section near the beginning.
That said, I'll admit that I'm not a huge fan of stealth gameplay. It's in the same category as Survival-Horror for me...which is to say, it's a very frustrating love that I only ever indulge in once a year. Kinda like a summer romance in the peak of one's youth - a short, but fleeting sweetness that can quickly become bitter if savored for too long...and you find out that Metal Gear Solid already has a boyfriend back home. And don't even get me started on how many "ice cream dates" Resident Evil had that summer...usually it's best to leave it as a quick, whirlwind romance that ends with the summer's last light.
But even for a stealth section, the Forbidden Fortress in Wind Waker wasn't very well designed or implimented, and considering it was my first experience with stealth mechanics, it didn't leave me with a good impression of the genre, either. Kinda like a summer romance with your cousin in West Virginia with the terrible lisp. At the very least, you can take solice in knowing that every experience there after can only be better by comparison, even if you now have a sudden fear of snakes, and can never look at spinach the same way again.
...erm, replace "snakes" with "lanterns," and "spinach" with "barrels." We're still talking about Wind Waker, of course...
You buy Nintendo systems to get Nintendo games and ONLY Nintendo games. You don't get their systems for third parties.
Let's face it, even if Nintendo maintains a good relationship or possibly the best relationship, there is noway that third party games can sell just as well as Nintendo games exclusively on Nintendo systems.
Look at the best 3DS Selling games out there. Nintendo games are topped the highest and the only few third parties out there are the ones that stand out particularly Monster Hunter and....i guess Yokoi Watch.
So what are you asking Nintendo here? To become lazy and not make quality games inorder for third parties to be encouraged? Because doing that will give you little to no reason to get Nintendo systems in the first place. Not to mention that it'll only embarrass the industry further with third parties being in shame.
Otherwise what? Make powerful systems? Doing that will be expensive to produce and not something that is easy to do.
Some say that Nintendo ought to go third party and to that I say, screw them for saying so. You have these games that were designed exclusively on their systems and now you want them to be on PC? Get real.
Even so, its still expensive to do so because I imagine that it needs accessories to make that happen and doing that on PCs is harder than doing it on Consoles because atleast on Consoles, you set the limits to yourself and that's that. Where's the limit in PC?
@CreamyDream It's a nitpick because it's a common enough thing for people to say "you" when they mean to use a more general sense. I do it a lot, too, obviously. It still bugs me, though, since it always feels like words are being put in my mouth, and honestly, it tends to be more of freudian slip, especially when the speaker is highly emotional.
I understand what he means to say there. It doesn't really impact his statement in any way. But sets off an aggressive tone that the rest of his comment seems to amplify, ultimately drowning out any constructive criticism he may be presenting. It doesn't help that Socor's comments as of late seem to be very...defensive? I'm no psychologist. I also don't like psychologists, so I'm not gonna try to be. But I do know I'm not gonna get through to him if we debated on this subject, because a debate is clearly not what he wants.
1. I remember thinking the stealth sections were frustrating my first playthrough but now they feel more just pointless and boring to me. It's technically better than the ones in the N64 games and Splinter Cell was new so I guess it made sense to make a longer section. But otherwise it's just a boring place (gameplay-wise) where you do things.
2. I played Wind Waker HD to 100% completion (almost including even the Nintendo Gallery until I looked up how to get that last Tingle brother), and I never would've dared done so for SD.
3. My opinion of Wind Waker has practically reversed. I thought in 2003 it was a "challenging enough to be fun" game where I really enjoyed the main journey (barring triforce pieces of course) and loved the story but thought the side stuff was disappointing (especially after Majora's Mask). Now I think after HD the main stuff is good but not great (story loses some impact once you know everything imo and it's the most annoying to me in how much of the better characters (mainly the pirates) I wished were expanded upon), but have a sort of relaxing journey through one hundred percenting most of the stuff. And it's usually a bit too easy. It's a fun checklist for me and the atmosphere of just checking out everything in this ocean is simply enjoyable for what it is. Not too different to how I enjoyed the almost insulting amount of time it takes to 100% adventure mode in Hyrule Warriors.
4. Majora's Mask I'm surprised I love so much since I knew everything about the game through a guide before I ever even completed the 2nd temple.
5. I will say my opinion of Wind Waker's gameplay almost feels hypocritical to me since I don't have many logically thought out reasons for why the dungeons or whatnot haven't gotten boring to me but haven't for other 3D Zeldas. They just kind of have. Closest I can think of is that I feel like Wind Waker was a transition from how OOT/Majora's Mask dungeons worked to TP/Skyward Sword's and it doesn't seem to capture exactly why I loved either. Even in terms of it being an easier 3D Zelda, Twilight Princess is mostly as easy IIRC.
Let's face it, even if Nintendo maintains a good relationship or possibly the best relationship, there is noway that third party games can sell just as well as Nintendo games exclusively on Nintendo systems.
They don't need to sell as well as the exclusives, they just need to sell well. I wonder if Nintendo could shift their game releases to not as busy 3rd Party months, like how the big 3rd Party games come ot in fall and winter, could Nintendo still have successful software launched in Summer? Maybe they could strengthen their 3rd Party support by not directly competing with big 3rd Parties titles for a few years.
People keep saying the Xbox One doesn't have Backwards Compatibility.
I don't think they know what Backwards Compatibility means...
@black_vanguard AC1 is the only one I've played fully, and I liked it enough to buy 2, 3 & 4. I loved the 'Nothing is true; Everything is permitted' stuff. But from what I've seen your opinion is definitely unpopular - most people seem to look at it as the worst.
I'm currently stuck in the underground area in AC2 and haven't returned to it for a while as I have it on PC, which doesn't get as much game time as my Wii U (hence I bought AC3 & 4 on Wii U)..
