I figured as some one who loves table top gaming from the classics like Chess to RPGs, like DND And fun board games like Here to Slay….who else are tabletop gamers here.

I use to play Dungeon and Dragons as as well as Vampire the Masquerade alot back when I was in high school. Nowadays it seems on rare occasions that I do mainly due to my work schedule. Mostly what I do is every Saturday night my roommates, my son and myself will get together for drinks and a fee round of Cards Against Humanity.

I'm currently in the middle of a Tyranny of Dragons D&D campaign with a small group of friends. We were having a session every two weeks, but we're on a temporary hiatus due to life. I'm a complete newbie and am still learning some of the ropes, but it has been a lot of fun so far! I'm running a human ranger; the rest of the group consists of a Dragonborn sorceror, a Tiefling rogue, and a Tiefling paladin. Currently, we're undercover members of a caravan that also contains some Cult of the Dragon members. Some interesting mishaps along the way to be sure. The only disappointing thing is that I had to temporarily leave the young guard drake behind that I tamed. My character is still trying to learn Draconic to direct it properly; the irony is she already knows four languages. XD

When this campaign is over, one of the other players wants to run a Grim Hollow campaign. I've spun up a Tabaxi rogue for that already with an...interesting backstory.

@Tyranexx Tyranny of Dragons is a get adventure. I was running it for awhile with my group then life happened and a house fire so I would probably have to restart it from beginning especially since some of player's characters were lost in the fire.

Right now I am toying with the idea of doing a Ravenloft Campaign using the Von Ricthen's guide to Ravenloft since I looks like I might be free Saturday evenings.

@Themagusx1 What do you mean with my own story??

I mean are you running the curse of strahd or are you doing g your own campaign story in Ravenloft?

Themagusx1

Tasuki

@Themagusx1 Well Curse of Strahd is separate from Von Ricthen's Guide. Curse of Strahd is just an adventure telling the story of how Rqvenloft came into being and introduces the Domain of Barovia. Von Ricthen's goes into more greater detail of the other domains in Ravenloft. So I guess I will be doing my own. I have old 2nd Edition adventures that I can convert easily enough.

@Tasuki I missed out on the very beginning of the campaign, but so far it's been really fun! Probably my favorite moment so far was, when one of the other players was running a different character (Wanted to use a new one), said character got into a solo side adventure when we tried to infiltrate a Cult of the Dragon camp. Most of us were stealthed, but he was dressed up in cultist clothing and got roped into helping in the kitchens. Let's just say a mysterious case of food poisoning hit much of the camp after we got out of there. XD

Runner-up would be a more recent situation involving a noble in the caravan who was suspected of theft. Our rogue was trying to locate the stolen relic, sneaked into his tent, failed a stealth roll, and had to hide for the whole day. The best part is the guy was only wearing a snigger pink night robe. Funny thing is nobody reported the rogue was back since literally nobody else in the caravan liked the stuffy guy.

I recall you mentioning the house fire a little while ago. My sympathies.

@Tyranexx I do remember the part where you infiltrate the camp. If I remember correctly that was the last major thing we did before we stopped.

Thanks for the condolences. Things are moving forward slowly which is one reason I am thinking of doing a D&D night to give me a something to do to relax and get my mind off of things.

@Tasuki I forgot to mention that character was a Changeling sorcerer, so he managed to replicate the appearance of one of the low-level cultists we took prisoner. XD He also had a pixie companion and they had an... interesting relationship.

Glad to read things are moving forward and that you're at a point where you can relax a little. While I haven't personally experienced a house fire, I know secondhand that it can take awhile to get back to a semblance of normal.

I just recently tried out DnD for the first time after a friend of mine persuaded me and it is actually a lot more fun than i expected, those Sessions can get so long though and you really gotta get invested since there are so many details whew. I just wish we would finish the tutorial campaign after 2 months already .

@Tyranexx Yeah it's going to take awhile to get back to normal especially since my house has to be rebuilt from the ground up.

Agreed, it can definitely be a time investment. Sooo many details to keep track of, but I think that's part of the fun. Thankfully most of my rolls currently consist of ye olde D20s and D8s, so things don't get too crazy.

@Tasuki Much luck from my piece of this floating rock. A total loss then? I do hope everyone made it out okay, but man...that's devastating.

@Tyranexx Yeah everyone made it out ok including all animals, but yeah it can be quite devastating at times having to start over but sometimes it can be a blessing.

Regarding Dnd:
I am curious, how many people do you usually play with and how long is a session? Do you sometimes switch out people when one has no time or just wait it out? Also are you all among friends or is it more a club-like thing? Do you think of your own campaigns or rather stick to premade ones?

My group is relatively small right now: four players and the DM, so five total. Session lengths vary, but usually anywhere from 4-5 hours on average. Once in awhile if someone can't make it last minute, we'll play anyway, but lately we've been waiting it out since there are so few. Busy schedule for everyone.

@Tasuki Glad everything living made it out okay! Seems like you're making the best of the situation.

@Solaine 4 to.5 people is an ideal group size any more and it just slows down the game in my opinion. As far as how long sessions go that up to the players and DM. I have had 8 hour sessions before but we had like 3 or breaks every few hours, food, bathroom, smoke breaks or just to get up and stretch so in actuality we played for maybe 6 hours. Generally I run 4 to 5 hour sessions with about one half hour break around the two hour mark. But that's something you want to talk about with your players.

As for what type of group. I played mostly with friends, as I said a few posts ago, I started playing in Junior high school with some friends and continued playing with them off and on the last 20 years. A few years ago I started playing with some randoms at a local Comic and game store but of course that stopped last year due to the pandemic.

For people who can't make a game session you want to discuss with all of your players on that one. If it's cool with all of them including the person or persons who can't make it to continue on the adventure when someone can't make it. Then you can use an NPC to fill in the void or if it's OK with the player/players that couldn't make it the DM or even another player can play them so they don't miss out on any XP or items. If it not ok to continue on without them well maybe you can run a one shot adventure for the people that are there.

I tend to use pre-made adventures mainly cause I just don't have time to make my own but I will tweak some of the pre-made adventures to fit my on going campaign.

Not a tabletop gamer but I just ordered Root: A Game of Woodland Might and Right.
https://www.polygon.com/2019/4/4/18295237/best-board-games-20...

"Root stole the show at last year’s Gen Con in Indianapolis, the nation’s largest tabletop gaming convention. The asymmetrical strategy game looks cuddly on the surface, but in reality it’s an intense strategy game assembled from political and social metaphors. Most interesting: No one at the table is playing by the same rules. That means it has more in common with some niche wargames than it does with traditional tabletop fare.

That ingenious crossover earned Root’s developers and publishers, Leder Games, loads of recognition from the Board Game Geek community. It took home top awards for game of the year, best artwork and presentation, best thematic game, and most innovative game of the year."
