Topic: The Most Forgettable Games You've Played

First off, I want to point out that I'm not necessarily asking for bad/disappointing games (if a game is bad or disappointing enough it'll certainly still be memorable, even if not for the right reasons). Of course, they may still fall under the umbrella of what you consider bad, but they can also just be those "okay", or even slightly good experiences that just don't stick with you for whatever reason.

Anyhow I think this might be pretty fun because it might make you think a bit harder than coming up with those really loved or really hated experiences that spring to mind easily.

A recent example for me would be New Pokemon Snap. I keep forgetting this game even came out this year, let alone the fact that I actually played it. It was an okay game & certainly pretty, but I moved on after completing the story & everytime I think back to the games I've played through the year it's hard to remember this was on the list.

Mario Tennis Aces fits into that category for me pretty well. It's not a bad game and I played a decent amount of it when it came out, however the more time passed, the more buried it got on my Switch's home menu, lol. The mode I played most was the online tournaments, and I never touched the story mode again after finishing it. I did play one of the minigames they added via a system update (it was a Boo-themed one), though only once or twice.

ARMS was another forgettable game for me as well, for similar reasons as MTA. I never bought it, but I did play the global testpunch a few times. I had my fun with it for a good while, and it does have some nice gameplay mechanics, but it just didn't hold my attention as long as stuff like Mario Kart, Smash Bros., or Splatoon.

I'd guess that some sort of memory jog would be allowed here.

A quick look at the shelf suggests Wii Party U. While I can remember that I own it, the actual contents are just a haze of grey. That's in contrast to the Mario Party games where there's at least a few signature minigames I could associate with them. The main reason I got it was for the extra controller anyway.

Probably that one Naruto GBA game I played through once. I beat the entire game during my peak of loving that series, and then never really thought about it again.

Animal Crossing: City Folk probably got played for 15 hours or less before I went right back to Wild World. Most of the Animal Crossing series has been forgettable beyond my first experience which may be around 1,900 hours by now. City Folk is the most forgettable as it didn't do enough different in comparison to New Leaf and New Horizons and felt like a prettier albeit inferior version of Wild World.

New Super Mario Bros U Deluxe (hope I got that right!). I just couldn't get into it. It wasn't bad, but I just didn't find it very interesting or exciting. I bought it because I liked Super Mario World 's hidden exits/ routes, but NSMBU didn't have anywhere near as many.

Assassin's Creed 2? 3? I definitely played one of them and it was so by-the-numbers that it lasted a few hours before I binned it.

Yooka-Laylee. Honestly, not a bad game in my opinion, but I barely remember any of it and it hasn't been that long. I have yet to boot up the second game, I heard that one's got more going for it.

Alien: Isolation as well. I heard too many great things and being a fan of Alien I went through the entire game in a few sittings but realised that other than the sections with the alien itself I don't remember much at all. The game drags for way too long and becomes very repetitive after a couple hours, unfortunately. I hope they make a sequel so they can refine on the formula.

Forgettable is so hard to come by because the game can't be too good or too bad, bad games are just as hard to forget.

I am gonna get roasted for this one, but Mass Effect 2 (I don't count 3 because I didn't finish it). By then EAware was full on media empire so plotpoints were either in comics, books or DLC and I'm not a fan of parsing out game story like that (which is why I enjoy Japanese made rpgs more as most are either self contained or a series, but you don't have to turn off your system to get the story). While I didn't enjoy the game play mechanics change, the worst parts were all story to me. The Reapers were de-emphasized as a villain as were the geth, you were forced to work for a terrorist organization, the pacing of the story was very, very inconsistent, the first 10 minutes of the game screamed "we don't know how else to allow for character imports/changes or stat rerolls" and for me the romance got really, really heavy handed (my FemShep doesn't talk to Jacob for her own safety) but the worst part is while I remember the general things that annoyed me about the game...I don't remember the plot such that it was.

Yet I can have a full on discussion about ME1 despite not having beaten it (I recently downloaded it on gamepass) in at least five years. Or Jade Empire which I can discuss easily despite only having beaten it once. ME2 felt like it was chasing trends, and it obviously worked as some people swear by the series but for me most of the story beats promised in 1 withered on the vine in 2 and by the time I got to 3 I didn't care beyond the romances. Granted, EAware was hemorrhaging senior talent during those years and it only got worse but ME 2 and DA2 were the beginning of the end for me. As such I have very little interest (beyond the romances) in either of those franchises now. And I can't tell you what happened in them past their first games, because they were so forgettable beyond me realizing that they were time sinks I can't get back.

Edit: the post I replied to has been deleted so this is kinda just in the ether.

@kkslider5552000 which of course is why the thread is entitled games that an individual finds forgettable. I found all of the new characters dull and most of them edgy for the sake of it and since Bioware decided a heroic BSOD was the best way to hand wave the changes in existing characters they came out disjointed. 2 was far less fun, mimicking gears of war and doing a worse job of it and the exploration and explanations in 1 are called world building, both a required and depending on the person, enjoyable aspect of storytelling. While some of the emptiness of the worlds was purely due to the tech, many of the places you went to were on the fringe of Citadel space, hence sending a Spectre. Thieves, slavers and murderers don’t usually build up a thriving metropolis. Those worlds are supposed to be empty, inhospitable as most of then are trying to stay under the radar. While getting to see Citadel Space was nice in two you still went to the barely legal locations and it was obvious that those were there to give location variety, not because of well written story. And the scanning and hammerhead sequences in 2 were no better (I’ll take the janky Mako any day over that mess. ) And since you agreed with what I said about the plot I don’t have to repeat.

Everything you praised about 2 I didn’t like and felt it added to its mediocrity and blandness. But I did mention that I didn’t like the gameplay or story beat changes. So while you obviously had a different experience as did most of the people that praise ME2 as the pivotal entry of the series. I didn’t… which is why I said what I said. Personally for me the series ended at 1 and I am ok with that aside from the money I wasted buying CEs for 2 and 3.

So I’m not sure the point you are trying to make by telling me your experience was different. Of course it was. Nothing you said changed my mind although you did remind me of more stuff I had scrubbed from my memory.

There was some dungeon crawler rogue like game on the Wii that I thought looked cool so I got it even though I don't usually care for those kinds of games. I got bored after like 30 minutes, and it was so forgettable that I don't even remember the name. I think it was only one word, maybe started with a B or D. The only thing I remember is that I'm pretty sure it was the last game I ever bought at EB Games before they got swallowed up by GameStop.

@Xyphon22 Baroque? I can’t think of a D roguelike on the wii.

I'd guess at AC3. At least that's where the series started to become stale for me.

AC has so many cookie cutter sequels these days that this may be hard to believe, but the first two games were quite innovative for their time and introduced a lot of the open world tropes that we now take for granted.

@kkslider5552000 and that’s fair it’s just the way you worded it was confusing. It seemed like you were trying to convince me my experience was wrong because yours was different. There was no need to delete, just elaborate or update the phrasing. ME2 is a popular game so I expected at least one person would get their dander up even though I merely shared why I felt it was forgettable. I list it in the thread about popular games I didn’t enjoy as well. Although for me unlike ME3 which I merely found boring since it built off of 2 and the Arrival DLC, I found ME 2 to be generic to the point of if obscurity as far as me remembering goes.

@Ryu_Niiyama Yep, Baroque. That was it. Now it's slightly less forgettable.

@Ryu_Niiyama I honestly think, from the bottom of my heart, that ME2 is overrated to the extreme. It's a game that focused so much on telling individual character stories (which can be good at times, others not so much) that it forgets to have an engaging main story.

They decided to add some fodder enemy faction with no personality at all. When compared to the Geth from the first game they're honestly terrible. There is no nuance, simply bad guys.

I also believe Mass Effect 3 to be criminally underrated. It ended a huge amount of side-stories from the first two games very graciously with some great dialogue and moments. It also had an amazing soundtrack and controlled far better than ME2. The ending itself was a mixed bag but they patched it into being better and I honestly don't know what people were expecting other than what we got. The DLC was fantastic as well, tops ME2's DLC by a big margin in my eyes.

ME2 is still a good game, great even, but I never understood the hype.

Struggling to think of something really forgettable (so I must have played something really forgettable) so I'll say Kirby Triple Deluxe. It was alright. Just felt like I was constantly waiting for something more from it.

Hang on to your youthful enthusiasms - you'll be able to use them better when you're older.
