@Anti-Matter Paper Mario and the Thousand Year Door is hardly a rare game. Both over here and online, we can still find plenty of them. Sure, prizes can be pretty steep, but it doesn't make it a rare game. A rare game would be a game that was either only ever released in one region, or which was only available for a limited period of time, such as The Legend of Zelda Collector's Edition for the GameCube. Or Pac-Man Vs.
Now THOSE are some REALLY rare games. Or Cubivore, to name but a few...
As for Skylanders: I have Spyro's Adventure and Skylanders Giants for the Wii. All you need to remember is that most of the figures are backwards compatible with the newer games, so figures from Spyro's Adventure can be used in Giants and all games that came after that, so that means also for Swap Force, Trap Team and SuperChargers. The other way around is NOT possible, so you CANNOT use figures from the newer games in the older games, simply because of the fact that these figures did not yet exist in the older games, so as such, they're not compatible.
If I were you, I'd start with Spyro's Adventure. It's a good game, and a good introduction into the series, and then move on to Giants and so forth. Oh, and yes, the portals and figures are universal, so you can use them across different consoles. The only portal that is NOT universal, is the wireless Bluetooth portal, but as long as you just buy portals that have a USB cable, you can't go wrong.
By the way: Giants is also the first game available in HD, so you could for example buy Spyro's Adventure for the Wii and Giants for the PS3 or Xbox 360.
I've made some photos. I only own a couple of figures, but it's enough to form various teams with, and seeing as I only own 2 games anyways, I don't really need any more right now. The third picture is an exclusive figure from the Giants game, the other figures are compatible with both games that I have.

Another heatwave day, so got chores done early. Going to stay in an air conditioned room, watch Sofia the First, and later start Metroid II. Grabbed Metroid II on 3DS this morning, wish me luck, the only Metroid games I've played were Fusion and Prime during their heyday.
@Blooper987 I can't prove it, but let's say I know the Angel Beats experience and know the feeling. That was a great anime.
@ThanosReXXX
Ah, so the Skylanders figures compatibility working in sequel order. Got it.
About the figures, if i use the figures not exactly from the starter bundle for example i use the figures from Spyro's or Giants for playing in Swap Force, can i finish the Skylanders games with any compatible figures because i'm afraid i will be stuck in journey (cannot continue the storyline) for using some figures that cannot go further due to their ability cannot pass through the obstacles (like you must have figures that can fly or swim to continue the storyline when i only use figures that cannot fly or swim) ?
I’m ordering it today but it may arrive in about five days.
I'm kind of on the fence about it. I'd probably like the button controls, but I'm not sure I'd want to pay full price for it, especially since the game didn't leave a good first impression on me back on the Wii. Maybe when it goes on sale or something.
@bimmy-lee Yeah that was good times, we would either go to Hollywood Video or that mom-and-pop rental store and me and my brother would look at games we could check out, while our parents were looking for movies. I remember renting Sonic Adventure 2 Battle for the first time, which was quite literally the first Sonic game that wasn't on a Sega console. So that was exciting. I also remember renting Mario Party 5 back in the day - that was actually the first Mario Party game I've played. Yeah, kind of surprising I didn't start with any of the N64 games. lol
@Sunsy Yeah, we've had our fair share of heat waves recently as well. Thank goodness for air conditioners. Best of luck on Metroid II - I didn't get too far in it but I have beaten the remake of it.
@Anti-Matter Well, you won't get entirely stuck, but it is always good to have a wide range/mix of capabilities, so fire, water, rock and so on. That's why I have six different figures for Spyro's Adventure, because all of their capabilities are different and complimentary.
And of course, I'd always have a Spyro figure, seeing as he is the main hero in the story, so there could be no story without him. The only figure I don't have, which I also could have used, is his girlfriend, another dragon.
So, if the question is if you can complete the game only using figures that are your personal preference or favorites, then the answer would be "for the most part". You WILL need main figures to be able to finish the main quest, and for the side quests, you'll need various other figures. For example: there could be a level full of water, in which case you will obviously need a water creature.
Sometimes, the side quests are just for points/bonuses, but other times, they can also offer up special items, which you might want to collect.
But no fear, each element type has a LOT of different characters, almost like Pokémon, so normally speaking, there should always be at least one character that you will like. Just take a look at those photos I made: there's two different water type characters in them.
Personally I like both, but if for example, you don't like the shark or the gargoyle, then you can just pick the other one. And of course there's more water type characters as well.
BUT: do keep in mind that some are more versatile than others, and can become more powerful than others, or they have specific skills, besides their type, that can also benefit you in other levels.

@MarioLover92 Thanks, I like it so far. Got a couple of Samus' upgrades. Oddly this feels nostalgic, even though I never played it. Maybe that's because I remember seeing the game quite a bit in the Super Game Boy guide the accessory included.

@ThanosReXXX Man do you remember when toys to life games were the S*** But none of them lasted, all but skylanders, All the other ended early bc of money issues.
Nintendo are like woman, You love them for whats on the inside, not the outside…you know what I mean! Luzlane best girl!
(My friend code is SW-7322-1645-6323, please ask me before you use it)
@MarioLover92 yup 😁 bioluminescent animals are the best. I tend to avoid the outdoors during summer but i cant help going out when stuff like that happens. We had a 17 year cicada come through our state about a month ago and i had to see them too. They were EVERYWHERE.
@Sunsy That sounds absolutely lovely. I mentioned above I'm not really a summer type-person (fall and winter for me please) but there is something about moments like those that are more enjoyable during the summer.
@Snatcher Yeah, I do. I was a VERY late adopter of Skylanders, and was actually also looking into Disney Infinity, mainly for the Star Wars story line, but since they dropped it, I decided against buying any sets for that, seeing as I don't like incomplete games or unsupported platforms. That's also my main gripe with digital-only: you never know how long servers will be supported for, and with my excellent collecting and care taking skills, I'll still have all of my physical games LONG after any current gen server will be disconnected, and your digital game on your console's internal storage becomes a completely useless bunch of one's and zero's...
@Anti-Matter P.S. The base of the characters tells you what their type is. In the first picture, the types are (from left to right) water, magic, tech. In the second picture it's cloud, ghost/death and also water and in the last picture, it's Earth Elemental. Just take care that you have at least one character of each type, and you'll be able to finish both the main game and all of the side quests.

@Sunsy That's cool, I used to read that quite a bit as a kid. I think that was when I first learned about Game Boy games - we didn't have the original Game Boy back then, but we definitely had the Super Game Boy accessory. It's quite nostalgic to see all those screenshots and everything! We used to have a lot of player's guides back in the day too. One of which being Mario Mania, which covered Super Mario World.
@Anti-Matter Sorry to hear you couldn't get TTYD. Really wish Nintendo would remake it for the Switch or something. More people deserve a chance to play this masterpiece.
@Losermagnet Same here, I've always liked cooler weather more. Right now I'm in an air conditioned room because it's way too hot. The boardwalk is nice in the evening, the cool ocean breeze and the bright lights of the arcades and restaurants.
@MarioLover92 Nice, I always loved looking at that book. I remember trying some of the color codes to try all sorts of palettes too. Yeah, we really don't get player guides like that anymore, from Nintendo or any publisher. I remember having the Prima Games Pokemon Red/Blue guide. That one always amused me they published the wrong map to the Cerulean Cave IIRC.
@Snatcher On the subject of Toys For Life, I miss Disney Infinity. I know I can play the game offline, but just the potential that could have happened. We could have got a Moana playset, and since I watch the aforementioned show Sofia the First, I read series creator said Sofia, along with Elena of Avalor, would have had a shot to be in the game, but never had the chance to because it was cancelled. Really makes me wonder what else Infinty 4.0 could have had in store.
I defeated my fourth metroid in Metroid II... I had like 9 health left and had to grind health back. This game is fun.
@Snatcher I knew there was Moana footage, but didn't know about any other footage. I think YouTube recommended me the Moana footage one day because I had on some Disney related video clips.

@Anti-Matter Here, this will also help clarify things a bit more: https://primagames.com/games/skylanders-spyros-adventure/guid...
Oh, and I actually also found out that Spyro's Adventure is available in HD as well, so you don't have to buy the Wii version if you would rather play the PS3, Xbox 360 or Wii U version.
'The console wars are like boobs: Sony and Microsoft fight over which ones look the nicest and Nintendo's are the most fun to play with.'
@Losermagnet Wow that's nuts, so there were a lot of cicadas around huh? Understandable, a lot of the time it gets insanely hot and bright during the summer. I love fall and winter as well, by the way!
@Eel That's awesome! I'm hoping I can get it soon enough too...but I kinda want to get the Metroid Dread special edition first.
@Sunsy Ah really? That's a fail on their part then if that's the case, lol. I remember reading the Nintendo-published guide for Pokemon Red and Blue, that had the stamps you could stick on the empty boxes for when you'd catch them. Yep, player's guides are pretty much done these days, since online walkthroughs are a more viable option now.
@ThanosReXXX
Thanks a lot for the Skylanders guide. 😀
So, at least if use the figures based on the starter bundle i can finish the main storyline, right ?
Also, for the same figures that i have train them on one Skylanders game, if i use the figures for other Skylanders games, will they keep their current stats (HP, speed, Attack, level, etc) ?
Oh, also for Super Chargers (Multi consoles) and Racing (Wii and 3DS only), do i need the racing type Skylanders figures to play and can i use the non racing type figures (the normal Skylanders figures)?
And for Imaginators, since it was the last Skylanders games on consoles so it can accept every single Skylanders figures, right ?
@MarioLover92
It's fine.
I still don't really have very high hype for old Paper Mario games, even if i can buy Paper Mario TTYD, i might neglect the game after playing for several minutes for not really ready to get into the game. I can see from my Color Splash Wii U that i still haven't finished that game for almost 5 years (i bought the game on late year 2016). I don't pick every Paper Mario games as i consider from the worthiness and my seriousness to finish the games. I will not consider Paper Mario N64 as i have no interest with N64 machine, i can forget TTYD for being too expensive, i don't think i want to play Super Paper Mario Wii for having very creepy scenes even in cartoon. Sticker Stars, Color Splash and Origami King are the only Paper Mario games i can pick as they are currently easier to get from my online shopping website Tokopedia.
