@ThanosReXXX Someone else's Pro had that, but I was talking about the Nintendo one.

I've said since 2017 it would be a DSi/N3DS (not 3DSXL that was literally a 3DS in a larger shell with a larger screen, this is more like N3DS where it's a refined build with a whole new screen tech, and a new chipset that's invisibly slightly better (It has to be, the old one is discontinued.) Though N3DS added a new control stick and trigger, so it was technically still more.) rjejr and I were going on about it even before the Switch launched, right here

Now the conversation about the "real" switch pro...that's just depressing. This switch pro will carry Switch to 2027 at which point we'll get that all-new-control jumprope-powered console (with no BC) to replace it.

@NEStalgia Well, then we actually agree. Although I don't know about that "old 3DS vs N3DS" chip set comparison: far as we know now, it really isn't that much of a different chip set, so unless we get full disclosure from Digital Foundry, it still sounds like a rather demure update to me, basically only addressing the cosmetics and some connection and sound issues. The Joy Con apparently are also still their drifty selves, so no upgrade in that department either...

And yeah, as mentioned before, the whole "no, the REAL Pro is still coming, trust me" conversation is too pathetic to believe, but apparently, some people seem to think that they have inside knowledge, or an actually working crystal ball, and they like to see themselves as tech heads, dropping all kinds of "interesting" details about possible chip sets and hardware configurations and what not.

Had there actually been a Pro revealed today, then I would have kept my word and I would have entered that very forum topic, admitting I was wrong, and giving the people that would have then predicted it correctly their moment of fame, but conversely, I expected the same from them. But as it often goes with the internet communities, the rules are simply changed to fit the narrative, and no definite wrongs or rights are decided upon.

Instead, they just do some copy/pasting, or retro-fitting (or actually the opposite of that, but I wouldn't know what to call that. Neo-fitting?) stuff to make it look as if even this latest official reveal is still completely in line with what they've been conspiracy-theorizing about all along. I find it tiresome, childish, pathetic and far as I'm concerned, that thread should be locked.

The official model has been revealed, they were wrong, end of story. The rumored Switch Pro improvements will more than likely ultimately return in the guise of whatever actually new console Nintendo is currently working on, which will obviously be nothing like the Switch at all. After all: Nintendo's main goal is always finding NEW ways to play, NOT rehashing current ways to play, so we'll see what happens, but I'm definitely not expecting any additional Switch hardware-related news any time soon...

Eh, people have been speculating about Switch revisions since it 1st came out .... I'm personally very happy with the OLED model reveal as it definitely won't be having any games that play any better on it, let alone exclusives
So, I can carry on with my Lite & hopefully that'll last until whatever the successor is

@BruceCM Yes this is how I feel.

@ThanosReXXX
I think there will be No Switch Pro name as Pro has been used for PlayStation and neither Nintendo or XBOX will use Pro on their product. XBOX has Series name on it, Switch has OLED edition name on it, PlayStation has Pro name.

No good deed
Will I do
AGAIN...!!!

So, will anyone get the Switch not so Pro? Personally I was planning to pass my Lite to my girlfriend and get a normal model so I might consider it if the price isn't ridiculous in my country, however chances are I'll still go for the normal one.

ThanosReXXX

@Anti-Matter That's not the same. The OLED isn't a more powerful console, so the comparison is invalid. There just isn't any Switch Pro console at all, regardless of what it would really have been called.

'The console wars are like boobs: Sony and Microsoft fight over which ones look the nicest and Nintendo's are the most fun to play with.'

NEStalgia

@ThanosReXXX Yeah, we know it has to be a new chip (because it can't be the old chip.) Usually that includes some performance bump (Similarly PS Slim models almost always include some performance enhancements, even if only DF can deduce them, vs their phat launch models.) DSi was actually probably a bigger leap from the base model than X1X was to XBone, technically as it had more hardware exclusives....so it's probably a terrible comparison, but we all have been saying DSi and we all know what each other means

It's depressing about the joycon. Those things are seriously a (ahem) trainwreck. I have a whole mountain of dead thumbsticks from those things. You'd think they'd have come up with something in new 'con that would, you know, not be DOA. Even for "Switch Amateur"

But yeah, we've always been in agreement I think about the inevitable revision, a.k.a "Switch Pro" and what it is. I'm not surprised at all by what it is, though I'm slightly surprised it doesn't have a slightly more enticing gimmick to it than only the screen. Nintendo always does some kind of gimmick, be it a form factor change, new "something" etc. All I wanted from Switch was a better screen (and not running games like MH Stories 2 as a slideshow, and joycon that don't fall apart if you touch them) but it sounds like it's just a screen upgrade (and probably battery which isn't a bad thing if you've got the launch day model that runs out of battery in an hour and a half or so.) Scalpers will still devastate sales when they open (when DO they open?) But maybe there will be less demand since there's nothing really upselling here.

But yeah the "real Switch Pro" conversation..... I don't know why anyone would expect a second new model at this point. Though I also think Nintendo boxed themselves into a corner and the "Switch Pro" will have to be replaced by a new generation at a time that it will make the Switch Pro look like a real wasted product. The hardware is getting long in the tooth real fast, and even exclusives are starting to run kind of gimpy. They talk about a 10 year life cycle, but I don't see how they could squeeze more than 2 out of it. Consumers may still be into it, but devs are hitting visible bottlenecks already. This is year 5 now, so I'm guessing new console 2 holidays after "Pro" launches.

NEStalgia

ThanosReXXX

@NEStalgia But does it have a performance boost? Nintendo basically already officially confirmed it's the same chip set as in the light, so no additional RAM or performance improvements at all. It's on the front page, in case you missed that article. So, the main benefits are bigger storage, better screen and better audio, all of which only benefits handheld players, basically. in 720p...

As for life cycle: how long did the Wii last, amidst a storm of "how can Nintendo keep supporting a non-HD console in this day and age" rage fits? Don't you ever expect anything even remotely resembling something like Western logic coming from Nintendo HQ...

As for why anyone would expect a second new model at this point: because they didn't get their "promised" model, so the prediction "obviously" hasn't come true yet. It's a true master class in the art of reaching for the thinnest of straws...

BloodNinja

I’m not surprised that amidst all the issues with joy-con drift and poor performance/slow load times, Nintendo updates the screen as a distraction.

BloodNinja

Eel

The only performance boost would be the lower battery consumption of the OLED screen. Which then goes away immediately because the screen is larger and thus requires more power anyway.

@Eel Not sure that larger means more power in this case. OLED powers each pixel separately. It's still 921600 powered pixels either way. Each may take a bit more power to light than the same size OLED, smaller, but it's got to be a lot less power overall than the LED backlights in the older models (at least pre-IGZO.)

@ThanosReXXX Ahh, I hadn't seen it was the same chipset as the Lite. Even for a refresh it's kind of a lame one. I still want it for the better screen, but that's pretty lame. I've been holding out hope that the eShop would actually be navigable before the generation sunsets.

For the generation lasting, I'm not thinking so much about consumer demand for Nintendo so much as Capcom and the like putting their foot down and saying "ok, this thing is a mess and we're done with it." - Capcom holds a lot of sway over Nintendo. Switch would have had less RAM at the start without them pushing on it, and N3DS wouldn't have had the nub. MH Stories 2 runs like trash. I'm terrified to think of what Arceus looks like. GF isn't exactly known as tech wizards. Even primitive looking games are slideshows from them.

Though Wii is a terrible comparison. The thing was deader than a door nail by year 5 and just kind of coasted on residual sales for 2 years. That's part of how SS failed the first time around in year 7. They could try the same thing, again, but Nintendo had finally re-gained the 3rd party support they lost with the N64, and if they try to do the "coast as long as residuals roll in" thing again, they'll probably revert to N64-3DS era 3rd party support for a good long time again. Profitable, but terrible business planning.

Kind of funny now Playstations and Xboxes get slimmer over the years and Nintendos get phatter.

NEStalgia

ThanosReXXX

@NEStalgia Yeah, I know about the Wii being deader than a door nail, but my point was just Nintendo's stubbornness, and seeing as they've already mentioned that they're going to support the Switch for quite a few more years to come, I'm not expecting any puppy dogs, unicorns and rainbows for all the Pro evangelists just yet...

'The console wars are like boobs: Sony and Microsoft fight over which ones look the nicest and Nintendo's are the most fun to play with.'

Eel

@NEStalgia well their own estimates show equal battery life, so it must have a extremely similar power consumption, because as far as we know everything else is the same inside.

@ThanosReXXX Stubborn is right. But no matter what they say it means as much as anything Jim Ryan says. "Someday we'll let someone else do VR" (Hardware department: "Have a look at the new PSVR2 coming next year!" )

Nintendo's the company that said there's no N3DS days before they announced N3DS and DS was a second pillar to Game Boy (I sure love the shiny 2021 Game Boy....) Support for 10 years means like 3DS was supported for years (After Switch replaced it.) Sony does the same (10 year for PS3, PS4, but the new hardware comes 6-7 years in.) So it's kind of empty words that could mean "No switch 2 until 2027" or it could mean "Switch is a compelling platform with a large library for our younger players" shrug

Bowser literally just said they're always looking at hardware for gameplay experiences and not technology for the sake of technology. Then 2 weeks later they drop new hardware with nothing but fancy display tech and audio upgrades. I'm convinced everyone at Nintendo is a lawyer/politician by night.

NEStalgia

NEStalgia

@Eel I'm starting to think the entire Switch GALAXY Edition is designed simply because they ran out of parts in the bin and needed a new contract, or because they wanted to design the least compelling product possible to thwart scalpers, or they really just designed it as a giant middle finger to Sony by appealing to Vita owners.

NEStalgia

BruceCM

Let's hope they didn't get the exploding batteries while they were in the Galaxy bin, @NEStalgia ....

God, I'm SO angry right now. Amidst all this idiotic new Switch nonsense, I was following the European Soccer Championship and as SO often happens, once again, the rightful team did NOT win, and now I have to watch those stinkin' Italians in the finals AGAIN. Their delaying tactics are simply horrible, their transgressions are disgustingly sneaky, and they just didn't deserve to win at ALL. But penalties decided, and I simply HATE penalties, because these do not accurately represent the actual power levels of teams in a soccer/football match: it's just 75 percent luck. Yègh!!! I'm utterly disgusted... /rant

@NEStalgia Well, all you said basically perfectly aligns with my earlier "don't you ever expect Western logic" quote, so you can't take everything at face value...

BUT... strip it all down to the bare bones, and what's left, is STILL Nintendo's core values, a primary amongst which is to continue to develop new ideas based upon withered tech, which basically perfectly translates back to this "practically no added value" version of the new Switch, with its already existing chip set.

As for them being lawyers/politicians by night: nope, you should know by now: like their lawyers, they're modern day ninja's. That's also why they're able to use plausible deniability and are able to shadow drop things...
