@HobbitGamer On a side note: your mother likes and PLAYS classic beat em ups?

@ThanosReXXX She's never played the genre before. But when you get down to it, it's pretty much the same as SMB. Only you're punching and kicking Koopas instead of jumping on and crushing their internal organs.

@HobbitGamer So, it's not really beat em ups, then.
But still: your mother likes and PLAYS video games?

My parents never understood it. Then again: that's probably due to them being from the 1940's, so that was just an entirely different generation. All they ever though of it, was it being a waste of time. Fun for some, maybe, but still a waste of time. And during my time living at home, I only ever got one video game related gift from them, which was a handheld LCD Pac-Man game.

Everything else I've ever owned or now still own, has been bought and paid for with my own hard-earned money.

Nice of you to mention a Pac-Man lcd game, because that means I can insert myself into the conversation to say I bought a Pac-Man Tamagotchi.

It's the cutest thing ever.

Just wanted to share that.

@Eel And that in and of itself ties in nicely with Animal Crossing, which is basically an open world Tamagotchi game. I used to have one, long ago, don't even know which one anymore, but it was during the initial Tamagotchi hype. Anyway, I wasn't very good at taking care of it, so it died several times over, and ultimately, I gave it away, deciding that it just wasn't for me.

I am going to get Animal Crossing, as I should, according to my own rules of buying titles that MUST be owned, due to them being console-specific, but I don't really know how long I'll be playing it. When the whole lock-down curtain will lift, there just won't be enough time to play, but I guess I'll ultimately find out how well I'll get on with it...

I have a healthy collection of tamagotchis.

(Both originals and the minis are from the 20th anniversary re-releases)

1 original gen 1 (on display)
1 original gen 2 (on display)
2 mini (on display)
2 Connection V4.5 (in storage)
1 Music Star (in storage)
1 On (currently waiting for battery replacement)
1 Pac-Man Nano (active)

As for animal crossing, don’t worry too much, it’s meant to be played at your own pace, the game doesn’t need constant attention.

@Eel Have they changed that, then? I remember on the GameCube, that if you hadn't "visited" for a while, the island and its inhabitants wouldn't be any the better for it, so it most definitely was a game to at least be played a couple of days per week back then.

@Eel Well, that's good to know. That apparently removed/toned-down mandatory play time was in large part responsible for me abandoning the GameCube version at some point. I did get the Wii version as well, but ultimately never even played it.

@ThanosReXXX Nah, BOGO's neither hip nor happening. Probably more associated with the boomer generation if anything. It's a sign you'll see hanging in just about every retail store at some point or another. But I imagine it's probably more an American thing. We do love our acronyms for everything....

Though more recently (past decade) it's been modified as "BOGO 50% off!" Meaning buy one get another one half off. Or put more realistically "25% off evenly numbered quantities." And it's always get the second one "of equal or lesser value" - so it's never really 25% off total.

Technically video games are just a waste of time. An insanely fun waste of time.....but aren't most wastes of time?

NEStalgia

ThanosReXXX

@HobbitGamer Oh, stop it now, you. My 50 year old brain can only handle so much...
On a side note: glad she's doing better. Probably took a BIG load off of your mind.
I am now wondering how old/young she is, that she likes video games so much. Not that there needs to be an age limit to it, mind you. We even got a member on NLife who's over 70, but he predominantly plays mellow games, such as farm simulators and so on.

@NEStalgia That was just me being sarcastic. I never once seriously considered it to be hip and happening. You should have read that part of my comment in an old geezers' voice. Like that old fart in the Pixar movie Up...

But yeah, it probably IS an American thing. Over here, shops don't do acronyms/abbreviations. It may confuse the WAY too much down to Earth Dutch...

And of course, all video games are a waste of time, but you know what I meant. It was like how rock and roll was viewed in the 50's and 60's: either completely useless or the work of the devil.

And watching paint dry is also a waste of time, but I'd say it's highly debatable if it's fun...
(I'm glad you said "most" and not all, though)

@ThanosReXXX Yeah, American's pretty much latch onto any "catchy" sound that they hear, for some reason. You'd think it's just human nature, but it seems to happen here more than elsewhere on average. I'm convinced people would speak only in acronyms and abbreviations. if it were linguistically possible. Even our laws have entire committees designing cute acronyms to name them by.

Watching paint dry can be pretty good use of time if you plan on sitting on the painted spot in the near future.

OMG, BOGO is so YOLO.

@ThanosReXXX - I’m very curious to see how sports come back around the world. We have until September to get it ironed out. If the NFL doesn’t come back at that point, I might flip out and devolve into a skunk ape. I find it hard to believe there will be fans at the events, but I would love to be wrong about it because it’s weird to think about.

I haven’t worked since school was canceled in March, but my wife has been working from home since shortly after. Since I’m always with the kids, and we don’t have two vehicles out driving all over the place; many of our expenses have been reduced or disappeared entirely. I think the only expense that’s risen slightly is food and alcohol. I also spend marketing money out of pocket to make paychecks, and I haven’t had any of that (no paychecks either). It’s been eye opening to fully realize the amount of effort and expense it takes for me to work with two kids who always need to be accounted for.

limby-bee was a jerk.

@ThanosReXXX For real. One time I left a match because she kept running through Nuke Town and would stab me. That's right, I rage quit on my on mother! Hahaha.
She's doing much better, in spirits too. She really liked the team and exercises at physical therapy today. She'll be doing that 3 times a week for a month.
She's only 59 next month.

@NEStalgia The Dutch DO like their numbers, though. So, BOGO in Dutch is usually just represented as bright neon cards with the text "2 for 1" on it, or some variation to that extent. And the rest of those "interesting" acronyms that somehow do resonate with them, they just steal from the English and the Americans, such as YOLO, FOMO, and what not. As I've already told you once, this is basically becoming Little America anyways, what with all the Americana (such as holidays and festivities) we're adopting, especially in the big cities, so most Yanks feel right at home in Amsterdam, in my experience.

@bimmy-lee In the news today, it was mentioned that the German competition actually IS going to start already, in empty stadiums. The Dutch rules have been made a bit less strict as of today as well, and organized sports are scheduled to be starting again this July, so that's actually the normal period for most sports that have so-called summer recesses, because for football/soccer, the season starts in August, so if they're allowed to start a month earlier, then they can just resume their regular training schedule to be ready before that time.

And yeah, in times like these, you do indeed REALLY start to realize the cost of life. Normally, you just work, pay the bills, set some cash aside, and don't think about it all that much, but now that you almost have to weigh each penny, expenses are definitely under the microscope...

Oh, well. Here's hoping it's not going to last too much longer. I did already apply for benefits, because I'm not gonna last until September or whenever. Maybe I'll just apply for an employed position again, I don't know. Times are WAY too unsure to maintain this self-contracting business, that's one thing I do know for sure.

@HobbitGamer Rage quitting on your mom, huh? That must have been some interesting conversation afterwards...
I hope it wasn't right before dinner.

How has everyone been? Haven't been on the chat lately. Been pretty busy the last month or so doing a ton of yard work. As wierd as it sounds, animal crossing kinda inspired me to have a nice looking property. So I've been digging, planting, mulching etc. And I can finally say it looks really nice. Nice enough to post a photo. I just don't feel like going through the motions of uploading it 😂. Either way i hope everyone's well.

@NintendoByNature Same here, dood. My free time in daylight has been mostly consumed by the yard and garden. Just sprayed for weeds and bugs today. Nook would be devastated.
