The only game I saw my mother play was Wii Sports as well.

My Dad used to play Mist and some of those Lucas Arts adventure games like Full Throttle and Secret of Monkey Island on PC. I don’t think he plays much now though.

My mom got very into Brain Age and Animal Crossing New Leaf for a while, and has a few games she plays daily on her phone. Other than that I wouldn't call them gamers. Particularly my dad has no interest in video games in the slightest.

My grandparents all were dead before I was 5 years old, but I don't think any of them even got to know what video games were. Even the ones that got to experience the 80's.

Interesting to read about parental gaming habits, especially since we vary in age. I guess the lesson is never underestimate a mom around Wii Sports or Just Dance, and Hobbit’s mom is super cool.

@NintendoByNature - Oh man, I had veeeery similar experiences. Sprite, 7Up, or ginger ale for all internal maladies, peroxide and neosporin for everything external. He was also big on Vicks vapo rub too. That was good for lots of stuff. He made us homemade cough syrup sometimes too, which was a warm shot of water, honey, lemon juice, and a little bit of whiskey. So a shot of hot toddy basically. I always slept great after one of those.

@bimmy-lee My mom is pretty cool. Dad plays a lot of Flight Simulator. When I mean a lot, I mean he will sit there and fly across the US for weekend fun. To each their own, I suppose.

@Tyranexx My father wasn't really a gamer but he did have an NES and played it a lot while his health held out. My first experiences with games were watching him play Mario 3 and then playing it with him as a little kid. He showed me many of the secret areas and power ups in the game. But he was a factory worker and as he got older, it really ruined his hands and made it hard for him to play...

I've tried to get my mother to play games a good few times, and to her credit, she tried to learn. But it just didn't really click with her. She did get really into Farmville 2 at one point and heck, so did I. But she quit that too eventually for reasons I never really understood. She has this weird mismatch of computer skills where somethings she can do super well, but other things baffle me on how she doesn't understand them... I bought her Stardew Valley and set it all up for her but, no matter what I do, she says the game doesn't work when she opens it.

@NintendoByNature Home made cough medicine? You mean whiskey?

Oh man, there are some amazing new threads popping up today. If only Sunday Directs were even a remote possibility, the comedy would be in high gear.

@HobbitGamer - I’ve heard and read a bit about the flight simulation hobby. Both the arcade cabinet enthusiasts, and the weekend warriors like your dad. It’s serious stuff. I’ve tried a sit in, arcade cabinet simulator a few times, and it’s a serious challenge.

@NintendoByNature - I enjoy a good, strong mentholated cough drop. I like when the vapors are blasting right out of my nose.

@Heavyarms55 - That’s a cool story about being taught the ropes in SMB3 by your dad. That game was such a cultural milestone. I also played it a lot with a family member who passed away.

Arg! It's only been 2 and a half hours and I'm already bored out of my mind! They told all the kids to stay home because of coronavirus and I think that's a smart precaution to hopefully limit potential spreading... and yet the staff of the school is still expected come to work! No students means no class and this is supposed to last all month! My contract says I'm still supposed to come - but there really is no point when there are no kids for me to teach! Please! Let us leave early!

@bimmy-lee It's a game that will be fondly remembered for a long, long time.

Currently breaking in my new mechanical keyboard while typing this. I LOVE this thing....Why didn't I pick one up sooner?!

Sprite and toast were the go-tos whenever I had a stomach bug. Whiskey was reserved for the worst coughing fits. I had my first swallow of it when I was twelve; the stuff certainly helped cure my coughing for a while, but I remember eating and drinking random things for the next hour just trying to get the taste out of my mouth. XD

I still have some hot green tea with honey and a squeeze of available citrus fruit to help soothe my throat.

@HobbitGamer Meant to mention this earlier, but your mom is indeed awesome!

@Heavyarms55 That's a really neat story about watching and playing Super Mario Bros. 3 with your dad. It's an excellent game for some bonding time IMO. Heck, many Mario games are. Gaming memories are great; I just wish I had more with my own parents.

I'm curious about your mom's problem with Stardew Valley....It sounds like one of those "why isn't this program working?" issues that I love to hack around with. It's usually something pretty simple, and if all else fails a clean install usually takes care of it.

I think gaming noise just annoys my dad (despite the fact he's losing his hearing) and he never has seemed to find it entertaining; I've even tried playing Johnny Cash songs on Guitar Hero, music I know he likes. A sticking point I had before moving out was that it was difficult to play the family Wii when anyone else was home and wanted to watch TV. Dad is strictly a TV guy. He fits the stereotype of falling asleep watching something, you think it's safe to change the channel, and...he stirs and wonders why the channel was changed.

Mom...Well, to her credit she's also tried, but she hasn't really touched much other than the games I mentioned before. I do have an early memory of her (I think it was her) playing the original Oregon Trail on the old Windows 95 machine we used to have. I'd always beg her to play it because I liked watching the animations and screens (couldn't read yet), but more often than not she was usually pretty busy.

@Tyranexx I really have no idea what he issue with the game is. I walked her through it, step by step, but I'm not in the same room (she's in the US and I am in Japan) and she says it just doesn't work. I know her PC is up to par, it's not a demanding game. I think she might be telling me white lies and not want to say she doesn't actually want to try and thinks blaming PC trouble is just easier...

My dad has played games for as long as I can remember, but mostly sports games, and even then the array he plays has gone down a lot.

I know back on the Genesis he rotated between Football, Basketball, and Baseball games (though I'm not sure which titles).
On PS1 he had again a Football, Basketball, and Baseball game, as well as WWF Smackdown (the latter of which we'd play together).
On PS2 he once again had the three sports titles, though also briefly dabbled with GTA: Vice City & Big Mutha Truckers of all things.
In the 7th gen he only played Baseball & Football games on the 360 (dropping Basketball), dabbled with Wii Sports & a Tiger Woods game on Wii, though once we got a PS3 he moved on to the 2009 edition of MLB the Show, and has played that title exclusively for the past decade (though he also plays Candy Crush & Toon Blast on his phone).

As for my mom, other than Wii Sports and a brief stint with Angry Birds during it's 15 minutes of fame, she's not to interested, largely due to motion sickness issues.

Currently Playing:
Switch - Blade Strangers
PS4 - Kingdom Hearts III, Tetris Effect (VR)

@Heavyarms55 Nice on the SMB3. I still remember learning how to play Metroid at my uncle’s one Christmas when the fam got together at their place.

@HobbitGamer Metroid is one of those games I didn't even know was on the NES until years later. I think I only learned of Samus when I first played Smash on N64. The days before I had internet were so different. I only knew about games that either I rented by chance from Hollywood Video or that people are school told me about. There were a lot of ones that, even as popular as they were overall, I never knew until years later.

Funny that if Oregon Trail was released now, they would consider it a rogue-lite. 😂

All it needs is some sort of progession/reward system. It already had some pretty aggressive RNG because by the end you were lucky not to get dysentery or typhoid.

Everyone at the Surabaya super mall knows not to hop on a DDR machine right after Anti. It’s a hard act to follow an expert, and there’s also too much residual @Anti-Matter slime.
