But x-rated books rely on your imagination, @ThanosReXXX ... Whereas films have to show at least enough to convey the idea &, in books like those, the sex scenes are integral to the plot, so you might have to tone them down for mainstream release but can't cut them completely

@ThanosReXXX - Ha, it was quite a funny moment. My daughter is always listening, even when it seems like she isn’t. Not the first time I’ve had to improvise a quick response for her. I should clarify that my wife thought they translated well what they could from the book while still remaining a movie that could be shown at regular theaters. I learned a couple things, but she made it clear the books take it to an entirely different level.

The books were such a massive, worldwide phenomenon that the role of Christian Gray was bound to be both a blessing and a curse for the actor playing him. No matter what he does for the rest of his career, he’ll always be that character. It’ll probably be in the first paragraph of his obituary after he’s lived a hopefully long and meaningful life.

Man, the Fantasy Pirates angle has just taken on a new layer of comedy. It’s delightfully funny to think about you watching the Fantasy Pirates trailer on the eShop wondering what in the world we were talking about, questioning whether we could ever be taken seriously again.

@BruceCM Well, I both agree and disagree, because you DO need your imagination more when reading a book, but a book also allows for more elaborate description of what is going on and what you should be seeing, and the graphic descriptions of some acts in the books where nowhere near to being found in the movies. But just as well, probably, for several reasons...

The books contain more X-rated stuff than all of the Harlequin romance novels combined, and some of these can already be quite racy, as I've often heard from my sister, when I once asked her why the heck she reads such cheap trash instead of actual literature.

On side note: but of course I understand the choices in the translation to the screen, and not just in this movie, but in any other type of movie as well. In a book, you can dedicate half a page or more to a person's inner thoughts, or to the description of an act, a room or a location, whereas that would never work or at the very least be highly detrimental to the pace of a movie.

@bimmy-lee I didn't just watch an eShop trailer, I watched this:

So yeah, I actually Googled it, to find out if I should make use of this discount offer or not...

And duly noted about the book vs movie thing. Glad your wife doesn't have the Pinocchio gene...
I do wonder now that you know all that, and now that you've seen and actually enjoyed the movies, if that has also made you somewhat curious about the books. If you do, better make sure that your kids are nowhere near when you do decide to read them, though...

Well, yeah, written descriptions, @ThanosReXXX .... However detailed, those still need some imagination Different mediums, anyway; I used to read a lot, so it's not a criticism or anything

@BruceCM Didn't take it as such, but of course you know what I meant. You just can't put the whole "put this peg in that hole" thing in a mainstream movie. Well, most of the time. There actually are some exceptions, but those are VERY rare, and mostly done by lower tier actors and actresses.

@ThanosReXXX - Oh man, that’s time you’re never getting back, sorry about that. Truth be told, when I called the original game Fantasy Pirates, I was only subconsciously aware at most that a game of that title exists. I thought I made it up until I saw it on sale in the eShop.

Funny you should ask about reading the books because the movies certainly pique my interest. I’m working on a basement organization and clean out project, and two of the books are currently sitting in a box of items to donate. Maybe I’ll thumb through them before I haul that box to Goodwill. My wife has filled me in on a lot of the good stuff that couldn’t make it on screen. The third movie should currently be sitting in my mailbox in a red Netflix envelope. Maybe I’ll spend another night not playing Link’s Awakening!

For mainstream cinema, it can't be too graphic, @ThanosReXXX .... &, overall, that (probably, since I haven't read them) be an accurate translation of those books
Just thought I'd make sure it was clear I have read quite a variety of books, including pretty hard-core erotica, in case anyone thought I was bashing literature
& I'm all in favour of mainstream films pushing the boundaries, too! I prefer not to watch actual porn, if I can get enough in proper films

@NintendoByNature - Just getting your veggies in. Responsible. Smart. This recipe situation is a project, no doubt. Not as big an undertaking as Kitten Mania or Calendar Project 2020, but tricky by its own merit. I don’t think my mom will be back home for a couple days, and then the variables begin. How many times will I have to ask her to take pics of the recipes? Will I have to drive there and just do it myself? What is the meaning of life?

@Heavyarms55 I'm kind of in the same situation as you, except I'm seeing Stadia ads on YouTube. Google really wants me to give up my Switch, don't they? lol

@bimmy-lee Ha, be sure to bring lots of ice packs and some tranquilizers to the basement if you do...

@BruceCM Oh, boy, it would seem that you're in desperate need some educating on what actually can and can't be shown in mainstream media...

As long as a director applies for his script with the right forms and sticks to all the subsequent rules connected to it, then you actually can show quite a bit. But as mentioned before, it's usually done by lower tier actors and actresses. Or the ones starting their careers. Often times, it's also art house movies.

To get some idea of that, look up titles like The Brown Bunny, Lie with Me, Les Fruits De La Passion, Guardami, Intimacy, Ken Park, 9 Songs, Kids, Romance X and Shortbus, to name but a few. Most of them are indeed art house movies, as mentioned before, but plenty of the people starring in them have gone on to star in other movies or series, and are relatively well known in the business.

@bimmy-lee all great questions. At least I'll get my veggies in no doubt. My wife is now on this vegan diet or something like that. Tonight for the first time ever, I'm attempting Orange cauliflower(Orange chicken substitute) with some brown rice and garlic broccoli. All healthy enough to have some pie later

@Anti-Matter You're welcome, man. Best advice I can give you is to go at your own pace. Don't go beyond what you currently feel comfortable with, but do always keep an open mind. The past is the past, and the future doesn't have to be the same, unless you keep looking back to the bad things, in which case it's actually you negatively affecting your own path.

I mean between the kiddy games and the highly realistic and/or violent games, there's still an entire world of in-between games, which you might like after all.

For example: yesterday, I played the Ori demo on the Switch, and it truly is a very charming and enchanting game, which I personally could imagine to be quite fitting for you. I know you previously commented negatively on it, but that was your first impression, and first impressions aren't always right.

Over here, we have a saying, that translates to "you can't say you don't like a certain type of food, if you've never even tasted it", so sometimes, you just have to put yourself out there and try new stuff.

And if you still don't like it after having tried it, then you could always remove that demo from your Switch again, as if it was never on there in the first place, but I truly haven't found anything offensive or scary in there. To me, it was almost like playing a fairy tale.
