I don't think you guys realise just how big the collective sigh of relief was in the rest of the world when Obama, and not the other dude, won the election.
That in itself is worthy of the peace prize.
then why is the peace prize going to Obama, when it should (according to that viewpoint) rightly be going to over half of the voting citizens of the U.S. (or over half of the electoral college if you'd like to get picky)? after all, if anyone's deserving of an honor for Obama just having taken office, it should be going to the people who actually cast their votes to get him in there.
Wait, what? Because he's the figurehead? Every political, economic, or social leader, whether loved, hated, oppressed, or dominant has an army of followers behind them. Che Guevara - why is it only his face on the shirts/ leftist propaganda pieces and not every person that ever supported him? Why is Miyamoto the only one people talk about, when in reality he's just one guy in a massive creative process that involves a lot of talented minds?
Being the leader, the one willing to step up to the plate and risk his/ her neck is exactly why it's that leader that gets accolades, not the millions who sit around hotly discussing politics on an internet forum, and then turning their screens off to go play some Mario.
And again, Obama deserves every award imaginable just for being smart, and ballsy enough to actually contest and win an American election on halfway decent terms.
Although this debate is utterly futile since the vast majority of Americans who read this haven't spent sufficient enough time outside of America to realise how screwed up it really is, and the real rammifications of what Obama is trying to do.
@WaltzElf: if all he had to do to 'deserve' this prize instead of the other candidates was to become president, why not give it to the people who actually put him there? that's what i'm asking, because he certainly didn't vote himself into office, the people did that for him. Che Guevara did things, Miyamoto has done things, but what has Obama actually done so far?
also, i can't stand it when people in my own country try to tell me that Obama is going to save us all somehow, so I'm sure you can see that people outside my own country trying to shove the same crap down my throat are going to be flat-out ignored at this point. I certainly feel bad for the man being thrust into this situation by the Nobel Prize committee, and i hope he winds up doing something truly prize-worthy during his term of office, but as of yet, he has done nothing to deserve it IMO.

@theblackdragon.... ummm WatzElf isn't American wich explains things. Because its funny that American have an approval rating of what 40-50% on Obama and his policies and others around the world who dont live here and never have just LOVE him and think he is just the greatest thing in the Whole World. Guess what he is just a man, he eats, sleeps and everything else just like everyone else. I respect that he is trying to do things but I want the War OVER and he said he would do that and he get the NOBEL PEACE PRIZE for prolonging a WAR...........HOW and Wtf!!!!!!!

Ironically, Alfred Nobel invented dynamite and felt horrible about all the people that died making it so he wanted an award that celibrates the best of mankind.

You know what they say about an outsiders perspective usually having that degree of objectiveness that is impossible for people in the thick of it to see?
Yeah. The typical American doesn't know enough about the outside world to realise how dangerous Bush was. Obama's done some brilliant things already internationally, not least of which bring a peaceful engagement with the Middle East back on the roadmap. It's way, way, way away yet, but under the republicans it's just never going to happen.
Obama didn't start the war. There's not much he can do about it now that Bush committed America to it, considering what would happen to Afghanistan if he withdrew the troops.
But please, continue this narrow-mindedness. It's pretty common with political debates, and always good value.

... because all americans who don't agree that Obama is naturally awesome automatically love the war and wanted Dubya to stick around for a few more terms? who's being narrowminded, again?
Obama is only a man. He eats, he drinks, he has a family, he has a (very) important job, he even smokes (or did he quit? i don't remember, nor is it any of my business, really), and he sleeps. The only reason he's even being entertained in the Middle East is because he's Not Bush, and he has done nothing yet but exist to 'earn' that prize. but do go ahead, keep telling me you know everything about my own country's politics and that because I live here, I know nothing. I'll wait patiently for you to finish, and then continue ignoring you.

@WaltzElf.... I didnt mean anyting to you as a person or anything but Im NOT a typical American. I educated myself in politics and history and Obama is not unlike a lot of leaders that have come and gone. Our LEADER of our country has a organization of Czars now wich most all have ties to the Communist Parties of America also know as NeoNazies or whatever else you want to call it. These people are highly paid and do Not even answer to our own Supreme Court. That is Dictator. buddy not government. He has taking control (monetarily) of our banks, car industry, insurance and now trying to control Heatlcare. To others around the world this is no big deal because its a norm for you guys but In America we used to live Free. That is why our ancestors seperated themselves from Britian, to live free and not be told by Government how to live. BUT in America our children are not taught this, we have too and you are treated like a Communist if you speak like I am now in America. Obama isnt the one who started this, Bush did hisself but this has been goin on since the early 1900s. Its history and its not taught. America is loosing its freedom and Obama has put a rocket on it to get us to a full government national society as soon as possible.

People say lots of things. Being an outsider may make you objective (though not really, but whatever), but it also makes you less informed. Who knows a country better than one who lives there? I don't know where you're from, but I wouldn't presume to tell you better about it if I did know. In fact, as an American, I would quickly be laughed at for it, but of course when it goes the other way, everyone can tell us what our country needs.
Not necessarily disagreeing with your opinion of Obama, just your approach in presenting it to us.
My mind's been blown from the concept of someone getting a Nobel Peace Prize for unpeaceful purposes. @_@

Ok. If Obama withdrew the military support that Bush committed to Afghanistan the following would happen: The Taliban would be back, with a righteous vengeance that only a supremely cruel overlord with no risk of reprimand would have. This isn't Vietnam. Withdrawing from Afghanistan won't just leave a shattered nation, it will leave an actual winner.
The window to remove the Taliban will be closed - once you pull out, you can't go back in. The Taliban will be free to forge alliances, America's position in the rest of the Middle East will actually weaken, and set back talks in other nations such as Iran.
And the Afghan people will suffer far worse under a victorious and arrogant Taliban.
Pulling out of a destabalised nation is a horrific thought. Bush got Obama into the mess, he has no choice at this stage.

Oh, Waltzy. Trying to talk down to the rest of the board. How cute.
