For the fist time in years (since high school) I got the urge to read a book, so I dug through my room until I found my copy of Jurassic Park & started it up.

Love the movie, but have never fully completed the book (started it before way back, but never finished it). Hopefully that changes now, and it's been good so far.

So, anyone else been reading anything?

To the Mods: I know we had another book thread around here somewhere (heck, I may have even created it, lol), so if you can find it & think it's still relavent, go ahead and close this one, but for the life of me I couldn't find it. The search function wasn't working for me, and on Yahoo!, the only thing that came up were Nintendo themed book reviews written on the main site.

I read Jurassic Park earlier this year, it was awesome. Reading the original and comparing it to the movies was pretty fun, too.

All the movies take stuff from that book.

@Meowpheel, yeah, I'm not too far into it yet, but I was surprised to find it starts out with something that didn't happen in the films until the second one. where the little girl is attacked by those little dinosaurs on the beach.

Just finished the Dark Forces trilogy and have started the Thrawn trilogy, although I'm beginning to think I've already read it

@RR529 I won't spoil things for you, but you'll get many "oh so that's where that came from!" moments with the book.

It's also very interesting seeing just how different the characters are in the book.

@RR529 Can't find the other thread either.. We'll keep this one for now.
Currently reading The Outer Limits of Reason by Noson S. Yanofsky when I have the time. I don't really have the time to read the books I'd like to read. Most of the stuff I read are for educational purposes. I don't complain, but that means that the average book takes months to finish; and I still have the Silmarillion laying around too.

I recently read The Hobbit and I really liked it. When I have some money I'm considering buying the LotR trilogy. Has anyone here read those?

I have this book I bought at a second hand store in Arizona some years ago, it's called Magic in Ithkar 3 and it seems to be short stories taking place around the titular city of Ithkar (which is why I don't mind it being the third in the series, it probably doesn't follow much of a continuity I guess).

Anyone heard about it? I'm planing to start it one of these days...

I started Bill Bryon's A brief history of everything the other day. Given the aim of the book I'm already getting annoyed by the amount of incidental comments in it - I don't give a rat's pyjamas if someone didn't get the credit they deserved for discovering something that someone else gets associated with.

Books are one of many things where I keep saying that I'll do more of it, but keep putting it off.

I'm in a similar situation with EOTW where I've read the Hobbit and I'm curious about The Lord of the Rings.

I've read a fair amount of Terry Pratchett books and really like the Discworld series.

The book I most want to read is 1984. Everyone keeps mentioning it, and it seems to be getting more and more relatable in this modern age.

I'm yet another person in the same boat regarding the Hobbit & the Lord of the Rings.

I read the Hobbit back in middle school & loved it (probably should pick it up for myself if I get the chance), but have never read any of the LotR books.

Also, does anyone know if the Halo books are any good (or if they heavily spoil anything about the games)? I know at least a few were made, and while I've played only one game (though I plan on playing more), it's world was interesting enough that I could see myself getting into the books.

Was not a fan of TLotR books, the Hobbit was more enjoyable. I felt TLotR crafted a detailed world at the expense of the characters and story.

@EOTW Definitely a must read for anyone, it's not like the Hobbit, but it kinda depends on your preference I guess.

Make sure you get the right edition though, mine has these flimsy thin pages that makes you feel you're ripping the book in half every time you turn a page. That's my main issue with books these days, too many editions, and you can't tell the paper quality when you order them online.

If you've seen the Lord of the Rings films I wouldn't really recommend the book unless you're an avid reader.

It's a pretty big investment of time, is quite slow going and full of names and elvish speak that might annoy you as you try and pronounce them in your head, and if you already know the story from the films, there's no real reward for getting through it all.

I'd only recommend if you really want to get deeper into Tolkien as a writer/creator.

It's interesting that so many others are in a similar boat as I am about the LotR trilogy. I read The Hobbit this past winter for the first time and really enjoyed it. I actually did get the LotR trilogy as a gift but have yet to read them. Like games, I have a backlog of books. XD

What I'm currently reading is The Lost Hero, by Rick Riordan. It's the first book in his Heroes of Olympus series and the followup series to the Percy Jackson and the Olympians books (which I read back in high school).

@lilith, TBH, I haven't watched much YouTube, in general, at all lately (usually only watch it when I'm not currently following a show on Netflix, or playing a game, and when I do get on it I just catch up on the few gaming channels I follow).

I don't know how well following book channels would serve me anyhow. While I love to read, I don't keep up with the latest book news. I usually just re-read something I already have a long time ago, and if I want something "new" just pick up something that looks interesting at a nearby thrift shop.

I've visited thrift stores in the US, and they're amazing for finding books.

They usually have tons of them, even really good ones, for almost nothing.

I bought my first edition hardcover copy of Jurassic Park for 25 cents in one.

@lilith, oh, I hadn't intended there to be a single book we'd all read together.

It's more of just a place where users can come in to discuss what they're reading (or what they've read, or would like to). I just figured the title would be more interesting if it didn't follow the "X" Discussion Thread trend most threads have.

Sorry for the double post, but I just finished up Jurassic Park! As I mentioned before, I had been on a years long hiatus from reading, and this was an absolutely fantastic way to get back into the medium!

I was stunned to see just how different it was from the film. Not just in the sense that it was more in depth (which was to be expected), but also the fact that the story was genuinely different. It's like going back to an old favorite, but somehow for the first time, and it's an absolutely wonderful feeling (last felt when I read the InuYasha manga for the first time a few years ago, after being a longtime fan of the anime).

TBH, I felt it started out a bit slow, as it really went in depth into the history of genetic science, how genetic engineering works on a technical level, etc., and although it oftentimes did have a TL;DR explanation, I found that I tried forcing myself trying to understand the finer points to no avail (this is probably the reason I quit on it the last time I tried reading it). However, once it finally got going it was absolutely gripping, and many times it shattered my preconceived notions of what was going to happen (based on my experience with the film), which made it all the more exciting.

All I know is that I don't want to quit reading, and while I'm not quite sure what I'll be reading next, I think I'm leaning towards one of the many non-fiction books lying around the computer room (some of which I don't think I've read).
